I la LIBRARY Xv - GIFT OF „% LEE COLLEGE PRESIDENT ' S OFFICE fe ' ' ' I 1 w j|rp BE YE STEADFAST Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, the seat of the scornful, ut his delight is in the law of the ord; and in his law doth he meditate lay and night. AND HE SHALL BE IKE A TREE PLANTED BY THE WERS OF WATER, that bringeth rth his fruit in his season; his leaf k o shall not wither: WOT TO BE TAKEN OUT Lee College Library Cleveland, Tennessee 37311 THIS BOOK BELONGS TO THE CHURCH OF GOD LIBRARY, Photo by David W. Corson from A. D evaney, N. Y. TREES I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth ' s sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in Summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree, — Joyce Kilmer )ITOR: David Beatty 1S0CIATE EDITOR: Ruth Crawford JSINESS MANAGER: J. C. Hollie LEE COLLEGE CLEVELAND, TENNESSEE DEDICATED o ' o one who has been a no- ble example of Christ-like humility, consecrated scholar- ship, and devotion to God, and in appreciation of the truth she has taught, the Christian character she has moulded, the enthusiasm she has stimulated in extra-cur- ricular activities, and the untir- ing efforts she has made that this publication might be a success, we admirably dedicate this 195 8 Vindagua to YOU, MRS. SPACE. This is a time of popular sensationalism and transient customs. Ideas are changing and standards are slipping. But we, even in this changing age, reaffirm with joy our faith and confi- dence in the ancient, but ever-living Word of God. The need of the hour is for men and women who are steadfast in the faith; therefore we would emphasize through the pages of the 1958 Vindagua the exhor- tation of Saint Paul— BE YE STEADFAST. We gaze in retrospect at the events of this year and discover with pleasure that all that has transpired — times of happiness, times of sor- row, times of rejoicing, times of sadness — these and many others seem to form themselves into a beautiful mosaic which only a heavenly hand could have created. We have been preparing for the voyage of life, but now the time has come for us to set sail. With our banner waving, our sails hoisted, our boat rising and falling gently with the pulsation of the sea, we begin the inevitable journey. But often, and sometimes suddenly, the sky darkens, the sea grows angry, the boat pitches with a shuddering thud and it seems that our spiritual life is gone. Wait! Above the tumult of the storm of doubt and frustration comes the calm, assuring admoni- tion— BE YE STEADFAST. Presently Christ of Galilee appears once more to still the hurricane of the moment. Yes, we can expect to face trouble and misunderstanding. Enemies will assail, Satan will roar, the skies will darken, and the storms of life will rage. But oh! the peace and tranquillity that our lives will know if — like a tree that is planted by the water — we are firmly rooted in the incomparable Word of God. Peruse these pages, relive various activities, recall fond memories. Then, check your life. Is it or has it been somewhat unstable? If so, sink the roots of your spiritual life deeper into the rich soil of God ' s promises and obey the plea of the Apostle to BE YE STEADFAST. — David Beatty, Editor THE PRESIDENT II. L. The plates are made at a company in Atlanta, the actual printing is done at the Church of God Publish- ing House, and the book is bound at Kingsport, Tennessee. Under the present schedule, the Vindagua should be ready for dis- tribution the first part of May. GLENNA SHEPPARD Editor SPRING CONVOCATION Spiritual Emphasis Week at Lee College was March ■14 under the ministry of Reverend Paul H. Walker, everend Walker is presently serving as Executive Mis- ons Secretary for the Church of God, and his past ex- srience as evangelist, pastor, state overseer, Assistant eneral Overseer, and founder of the Northwest Bible id Music Academy has enriched his ministry. The morning services were devoted to lectures on the Nation of the church and pastor, and the mode, formula, ad necessity of water baptism, while the evening serv- es were evangelistic in nature. Our hearts were stirred 3 we listened with rapt attention to Reverend Walker ' s :rmons under the anointing of the Holy Ghost. Souls :ied out to God for mercy and for salvation. Several ere saved and others sanctified and filled with the oly Ghost. It was a week of soul searching— searching )r God ' s will for our lives and for a closer walk with Him. The week was climaxed with a baptismal service on riday morning at the North Cleveland Church of God l which more than a score followed the Lord in water aptism. The presence of the Lord filled the church, and e rejoiced that we were privileged to enjoy His bless- CAMPUS QUEEN CROWNED Lee ' s first Campus Queen— Annette Lee, from Lakeland, Florida — was crowned to reign over the climaxing events of our Million Penny Drive on Friday, March 7, 1958. Annette, who ran for the Liberal Arts Division, was chosen as queen through a point-system contest, in which ten points were given for talent, fifteen for school activities, and twenty-five for personal charm, etc. Also, a certain number of points (up to fifty) was given for the amount of money turned in by the candidate ' s spon- soring division. Pat Welborne, High School, and Marlene Delk, School of Religion, were the runners-up in the Campus Queen Contest. During the Penny Drive, the entire student body was divided into three groups: School of Religion, Liberal Arts and High School. Each division sold candy to the residents of Cleveland. The Liberal Arts Division sold the most; therefore, they automatically received 50 points for their candidate. The students hope to see this honor of being Campus Queen bestowed on other Lee girls in the future.
