Our biggest social event was La Dance De Noel . The proceeds from the dance will help pay expenses for a trip to Quebec this spring. Mrs. Millett is doing a fine job here. On December the 15 we had a Christmas party and invited the boys' dorm and the Faculty. We went caroling about town, had refreshments, and had our tree. We are very happy in our beautiful and modern dormitory and really are thankful for donations of all the kind people who gave for the wonder- ful building. Y . . , . , . 1 v , n DEDICATION OF WEYMOUTH HALL Hustle' Hustle' Today is the day November 11 1949 Dedication of Lee Academys new girls dormitory Weymouth Hall It is a very proud and happy group of girls that are busily moving from the old dorm to the new Glimpses of the begmnlng of the new dorm keep flashing into your minds-especially as a solemn stillness settles over the audience at Averill Gymnasium as the ceremony of the Dedication of Weymouth Hall beglns An Invocation is given by the Reverend Ernest Jones Music is provided by Lee Academys Glee Club Orchestra, and Sextet The Dedlcatlon address IS given by Mrs Leona R McDonald She expresses all of ours and her own sincere gratitude to Dr George G Averill Harry Weymouth and all who have made Weymouth Hall a reality Mr P A Gatz architect of Alonzo J Harriman Inc turns the keys of Weymouth Hall over to Mr A Moulton Pottle Mr Pottle accepts the dormitory on behalf of the Trustees of Lee Academy An expression of gratitude IS given by Rosemary Carlm a Representative of the dormitory girls A rededlcation is held at Weymouth Hall a little later ln the day in hopes that the girls may be able to show their slncere appreciatlon Dur Powers She is assisted 1n the ceremony by Sylvia Applebee Dr Averill Harry Weymouth the house mother the resident teachers and all the girls Weymouth Hall IS a three story brick building Tall slender poplars line the drive up to the building As you enter the dornutory there is an entrance hall In this hall IS the dedication plaque On the first floor IS the House Mother s suite fliving room bedroom and bathl snack bar the Averill living room 'VIerr1el Lounge Guest Room Infirmary Baggage Room Laundry Boller Room Second and third floors have only girls and teachers rooms On the second floor is the Freshmen and Sophomores Thlrd floor J umors and Seniors The girls rooms have built ln furniture-desks dressers closets mirrors Everything IS compact bullt for convenience There are two teachers rooms on each floor wlth connectlng baths We hope that all w1ll remember that Weymouth Hall is Dedicated to the Generations of Girls to Follow in Memory of Ellie Averill Wey mouth We have to thank only Dr George G Averill Harry Weymouth and many faithful friends and alumni for our Weymouth Hall. a Q . l , a . . , . , . . 1 . A Q v , 1, , ?'0'610'0f010K0f'0200K0ff-710Y-0w701010K0-0f00W0240K0'0000 WHAT OTHERS SAY Academies are of xarious kinds and various purposes Some are no more than local high schools Others are boarding schools that draw students from wide areas Lee Academy it seems to me is one that has found the serxice that it is best and peculiarly fitted to give and is giving that serx ice well It lb a good example of the way a secondary school either high school or academy can reach out into its own environ ment and do for the youth of that enxironment what their needs suggest I should not be competent to predict the future of this school and shall that if it continues IH the future as in the past to fix its goal upon the ideal of service to these communities and to the youth who live in them its next years are sure to be as significant as those which are past From the Centennial Address Dr Payson Smith Lee Academy is the kind of happy blend of the past and the future that you would hope Maine might produce It was founded as a normal school in 1845 yet what goes on in this country high school today fthe population of Lee is a little over 6005 sounds like the dream of an educa tional philosopher You would say it was the embodiment of Farmville Secondary School but this 1S an actual school grounded in an actual place The two dormi torles the school farm the several buildings came about because they were needed and in more than one instance because there was a man named George Averill to respond to those needs Like other Maine academies Lee prepares its students for college but because of the vision of Principal Pottle and the trustees many of the alumni of this school are prepared for a larger serx ice and a richer life in the rural communities from which they came and to which they belong The Maine Teachers Digest 01680 '-0'-0K0N0N0X0 0' -'-02010202 ,. . , . ,. ..,. , . ,, . , ,. , ,, .
