The 1982-83 school year marks twenty-five years since Ledford first began. The fifties witnessed a very significant pe- riod for schools. lt was the era of consolidation for schools in Davidson County. Ledford High School opened its doors in the fail of 1957. Ledford was the merger of Wallburg High School, fonnally Liberty Piedmont Insti- tute, and Hasty High Schooi, na- med for former superintendent of Davidson County Schools, S.G. Hasty. The name Ledford was given E 3 i. , I ses? 1 u is 3 Lit? V, in n 9 3- ...eq FEB! to the school in honor and to me- morialize former superintendent P.L. Ledford, who served two terms as the county superinten- dent of the schools. Mr. Ledford's home stood near the site of Ledford jr. High School. The lirst principal of Ledford High School was Holland Brinkley who served the first four years. Mr. Carlyle Cox became the principal in the fall of 1961. He retired in 1977 after sixteen successful years. The present school building opened in the fall of 1975, be- coming Ledford Sr. High School. The old building is now serving as Ledford lr. High. Ledford Sr. High, a fully accredited institu- tion, has now been in service for eight years. Three principals have served in the present build- ing, C.L. Cox, William P. Steed, and Gilbert R. Buck. The present principal, Nlr. Gilbert R. Buck, was a successful teacher and coach at Ledford in the 60's. Mr. Buck re- turned in january of 1981 as prin- cipal. Through the years many changes have taken place. The student body has grown from 375, twenty-live years ago, to over 800 today. The number of faculty and staff members has al- most tripled from 16 to 45. The athletic program has undergone a great expansion, while a new emphasis has been placed on cultural arts. Though many changes have occured, many things have re- mained the same. Ledford is still a community school, drawing support from the community, while at the same time contribut- ing ideas and skills to better en- able the area to grow and develop. The real emphasis was, is, and will be on educating the total student. Anniversary 5

A man's reputation is made, not because of a few outstanding events in his life, but because of the little things he does. lt is from to- taling these small details that we form a true picture of the man. A true teacher shares not only book knowledge, but the knowledge of human ex- perience. This year the KALEIDO- SCOPE is dedicated to a very devoted person, who shows the qualities of a true man and teacher. He is always there when something needs to be done and he never complains about do- ing it. He has sponsored the Youth for Christ Club since its beginning, and is always try- ing to get more students in- volved. For all the little things and for the many years ofservice, we dedicate the 1983 KALEIDOSCOPE to you, Mr. Wade Castevens. 6 Dedication it L-'- .... I ' I --.......,,...
