Dedication We, the Senior Class of 71 , dedicate our annual to Majorie Sheeley for the countless hours she has spent supervising our football and basketball concessions and helping plan menus for the Prom, Alumni Banquet, and many other dinners. She also served as co- sponsor our senior year. Her philosophy of life and her helpful housekeeping hints have helped the girls of many senior classes. The assistance she has given us will always be appreciated. Thank you, Mrs. Sheeley. Seniors of 71 A Time To Direct Administration BOARD MEMBERS: Herbert Niles George Evans Melvin Bunge Evan L. Ellis President Q 1 gif .. ff, E 13,2 -' ' El Dee McNabb Keith Gifford Marvin Morgan is., Superintendent Secretary Lloyd C. Smith Uniiied District 243 Jeanne Doerr Treasurer Secretary Principal Unified District 243 Lebo Attendance Center Donald R. Kimball Evan L. Evans Karen Dotson Faculty DONALD KIMBALL The main purpose of driver education is to make students more safety-con- scious. Nearly anyone can learn to maneuver a car. The most important value that should be brought through driver education is the development of a good attitude toward driving and other drivers. If taking the course can be the means of saving even one person from serious injury or death, the course will have been worth- while. BEULAH EDWARDS It is hoped that English students will fomi good speech and writing habits through daily practice and study, since ability to speak and write correctly is a mark of an educated person. Directed studies in literature also aim at teaching ap- preciation for leisure reading as well as ways of evaluating printed materials for informative reading. Reports, research papers, and themes are emphasized especial- ly for college-bound students. Mrs. Edwards sponsors the Annual each year and is co-sponsor of the junior class. , . MARJORIE SHEELEY It is the primary purpose of the Home Economics Department to introduce those enrolled to the seven areas of homemaking. Four years are taughtg each year delves deeper into each area until the senior girls play the role of homemaker and consumer. We hope to prepare each girl to be a better homemaker and to be able to adjust to our changing society. JERRY TEICHGRAEBER Mr. T has duties in both secondary and elementary, He teaches American history, the study of changing events in America since its discovery. World-geog- raphy, the study of geographical conditions in the world, is available to any stu- dents except freshmen. He also teaches freshman physical education. He teaches elementary physical education for grades one through six. Mr. T is head coach of football, basketball, track, and sponsors L Club. He also sponsors the class of 1972. JACK SHOEMAKER The Science Department courses include chemistry, biology, earth science, and physics. Mr. Shoemaker also teaches American government. Chemistry deals with the structures and composition of materials and their changes. Biology is concerned with living things, their structure, life processes, and environment. Earth science is the study of the earth itself and its place in the universe. Physics is concemed primarily with the study of matter and energy seeking to explain the behavior and inter-relationships of matter and energy in the universe. Ameri- can government is concerned with the State with respect to all details of popula- tion, territory, sovereignty, location and political intercourse. Mr. Shoemaker sponsors the sophomore class and is the official scorekeeper at basketball games. TOM OWENS The Business Department seeks to prepare individuals to meet with conti dence, business matters that may arise in their everyday living. General business, business law, and economics give students a well-rounded picture of the business world. Typewriting, shorthand, and bookkeeping are more vocational in nature. Although a student is not job qualified after completing these three courses, he does have the fundamentals to excell in post-secondary courses which are job orientated. The Future Business Leaders of America chapter has come to be recognized as one of the leading chapters in the state. FBLA promotes leadership and compe- tition in a wide range of business-related subjects. DENNIS POLSON Vocational agriculture education is a learning-by-doing, instructional pro- gram preparing manpower for careers in farming, agricultural supply and service, agricultural mechanics, processing, and agricultural resources. The F FA helps develop agricultural leadership, co-operation and citizenship in its members. Speaking in public, handling financial matters, solving their own problems, and assuming civic responsibility are activities stressed in FFA. ELIZABETH ROULAND Mathematics develops knowledge and skill in solving practical math prob- lems. Algebra is the study of the systems of real and complex numbers. Geometry is the study of points, lines, planes, and solids. FAYE MILLER Speech provides the student with the opportunity to learn effective oral communication through speeches, plays, oral interpretation of prose and poetry, and group discussions. The vocal music department offers opportunities for inter- ested students to develop their musical ability. Student Council offers elected students a learning opportunity in leadership through involvement in their school's activities. 'Xi'-t. --- ' I -'mis MARIE DAVIES Hopefully, the library supplies Resources for Human Understanding, sup- plemental to courses offered, and for independent study, exploration and enjoy- ment. The library assists students, teachers, and classes to secure desired informa- tion. - . ,.s.,,, . ......,,4 JANE LEWIS Jane Lewis taught instrumental music while Mr. Phillips was serving military duty. JAMES PHILLIPS Instrumental music includes band, stage band, woodwind ensembles, and brass choir. The high school band covers as much different music as possible in two semesters time, including popular, show tunes, marches, and serious music. MARYANN RASTATTER Buenos dfas. iCcfmo esta'usted? These are the familiar phrases which ema- nate each morning from the east end of the second floor. It is there that Mrs. Rastatter conducts her classes in elementary and intermediate Spanish where sophomore, junior, and senior students are engaged in learning something about Spain's language and culture. Students have a chance to experience all types of music. Stage band plays another important role-jazz. Being of American heritage, jazz is also emphasized, so a student may learn some of the music that grew up with this country. The wood- wind ensembles and brass choir are important because it is easier to learn about one's playing through small group participation. The student will also find greater development through these mediums. A music theory class is in existence. In it, ear-training, music history, score reading, and conducting are touched upon. Y I M StuCo Service Projects Tom Dooley Febru ary, 1971 Dear Student Council President: A year ago we members of Saginaw Youth Council asked our fellow' students the country over to help us carry on the spirit and mission of the late Dr. Tom Dooley. Today, as we renew our appeal, an estimated 6o,ooo students have responded. . many thousands of them by contributing the cost of a school lunch. On desposit with the Dooley Foundation is 3520,000, the total of these contributions! Now we're appealing to you and your school to help us FINISH IT FOR DOOLEY. We're appealing to you and your school to help us raise the additional 380,000 needed...to build, equip, staff and operate for one year a hospital ship for the Dooley Foundation in Southeast Asia. The ship will be named YOUTH AMERICA and on its cabin wall will be inscribed the name of every contributing school. It will be our generation of students telling the world Young America care-s...not only about helping the poor and helpless, but also about carrying on the spirit of a young man who cared more than most and who sacrificed more than most. We're asking your school to help FINISH IT FOR DOOLEY. We're asking that April 6 be set aside as FINISH IT FOB. DOOLEIY Day and on that day students be invited to give up their lunch and contribute its cost to the project. We also are asking schools to help their students and community become acquainted with Dr. Tom Dooley and his mission to the world's poor. will you help us get the ball rolling for Dooley in your school? Please let us know soon so that we can pass on the good news to others who may need the encouragement of example. The enclosures include a registration form and details of the project.
