Nobody would deny, however, that the Valley has a personality all its own. This per- sonality is a product of a diverse and very unique student body. Thus, the 1980 Quittie is not just a book of sterile buildings, differ- ential equations, and campus changes. It is a book of people. Its raison d ' etre has been to present a more in-depth view of life at the Valley through a closer look at some of the people who, for a while, call Lebanon Valley College their home. Quite intentionally, the book is aimed at the individual in sports, organizations, fraternities, and so forth — with the initial opening section serving as a brief encap- sulation of LVC — academically, athletically, and likewise, in regard to student life. It is hoped that this publication will bring back good memories of the past collegiate year. Most importantly, the 1980 Quittie is finally a book by, for, and about the students of the Valley, and that ' s the way it should be. — Pam Shadel A Student Guide to the Valley A Athletes, Art, ABC Is that thing really supposed to be art? Beats me! The only picture I know is Whistler ' s Mother. Athletes really do enroll at the Valley and yes LVC does have winning teams. In fact, the school even got a plug by How- ard Cosellon ABC. Can you believe it, ABC sports is coming here I ' ve got to call my mom. Let ' s have a tailgating party. B Bars, Benches, Book- Store (Beer see Illegal) It ' s Thursday, are you going to the bar? God yes, I deserve it making it through this week!! Rich ' s or John- son ' s? Why not check out both? We ' re there! Let ' s sit in the Quad and wait for the football team to come through. Hey frosh, off that bench. Maybe if we paint it red ' ' ?? Everyone loves to visit the bookstore as soon as a new semester begins: MELcnMFi; IQhn t C Cemetery, Coffee Hour, Cars The cemetery does not have to be a depressing place. Pledges have fun roll- ing kegs up the hill, while other students enjoy traying down. Coffee hour is the place to see who has pulled an all-nighter as they down five cups of valley coffee. In addition, it ' s a great place to mingle with faculty and fel- low students. You can not survive on this campus without a car! If the pressure doesn ' t kill you, the food will. You just have to escape sometimes. D Distributor, Drama (Dining see Eating) Anyone want to put in a buck, I ' nr going to Palmyra for a keg? The Valle student keeps the local distributors in business! From musicals to morality plays, the Valley has done them all. It ' s Central PA ' s own little Broadway. E Eating, Exams If you can handle the dining hall day in and day out, you ' ve got a cast iron stom- ach! Such appetizing dishes like chuck wagon and Salisbury steak (better known as mystery meats) make you want to flee to Wendy ' s or McDonalds. For those who like a late night snack to break up the all-nighter. Sambo ' s and the Wedgewood aren ' t bad. Dunkin Donuts is also available if you can stand the com- pany. Never in all the years of higher educa- tion has one school had such an incredi- ble mass of back tests. Thank you Lord! F Arts Festival, Frosh, Frats The Arts Festival better known as Spring Drugs Weekend, is a great excuse to put away the books and screw off. Freshmen just seem to stand out in the crowd. (See large vertical photo on this page.) Either they look lost, scared, or they ' re the girls who constantly carry a pocketbook. Valley Frats Want You! A fraternity will teach you humility, pride, patience, and how to determine which one of 25 guys borrowed your new Playboy. Brother- hood is very big in fraternities, and why not? When you live with 25 guys all of whom have seen you go to the bathroom, shave, get very drunk or very stoned, and ' tDtherwise have seen you as the ass you sometimes are, you either love ' em or hate ' em or a little of both. G Graffiti, Groves, Graduation !! © the obscene even have a place at the Valley. But every once in a while they get their hands smacked and the board and markers are taken away as punishment for their nasty scribbles. The grove was also taken away and unfortunately we can not get it back (at the present time we just got the grove back — hallelujah!) Stan ' s Disco was great but that went out of business and so did the student ' s social life. Let ' s face it, standing elbow to elbow in a crowded hall way just isn ' t a good time!!! Graduating seniors are the people who still smile during finals week. (Grades see Frustration) H Hell Night, Homecoming All right you worthless pledges, lets see if you can survive the ultimate in mind games because it ' s HELL NIGHT! Get your bras and underwear. Once you make it, you know that you could never go through it again. Alumni return in droves and Dutch- man pride comes alive for the Home- coming festivities. After several lackluster years of participation by campus organi- zations, the parade of floats was revital- zed. The most welcome addition was the election of a senior Homecoming Queen — Congrats Elyce! The spectating stu- dents sipped their gloved Michelobs and cheered the Dutchmen on to a 14-7 triumph over the Devils. L rSSU ■ I Intramurals, Illegal, I.D. ' s, Infirmary Varsity football is not the roughest sport on campus; intramurals are by far more injurious. The players are often for- mer high school jocks, whose main idea is get in there and kill, especially if you belong to a fraternity (Rivalry: Kalo-Philo see R.) Whether because of tension from school or over enthusiasm, every try is 100% effort, and the infirmary is filled for vi eeks. When speaking of the infirmary, always use a Dutchy Accent. Come on in for your physical. Any illness, surgery or other problems. No. Okay, go play, remember we ' re here to help you. When you ' re sick the infirmary always gives you pills to make you sleep. This is absurd because they know darn well no one has time to sleep! Illegal and I.D. ' s are actually one and the same. If you don ' t have one you use someone else ' s. Just don ' t get caught by Officer Finkle. J Jazz Band, Jogging Improvisational jazz, upbeat rock, gol- den oldies, whatever your favorite is the J-Band plays it. Everyone takes to the streets, espe- cially Maple, on those beautiful spring days. Just remember to run on the right side of the street! Annville now gives tick- ets for illegal jogging. ' K Kreiderheim, Kegs, Kreide r Kreiderheim is that big, old house that sits on the hill and that everyone longs to walk through The current occupants always extend a welcome to s tudents who want to frolick on the frozen ponds. Five a.m. is the safest time to bring in a new keg. This is one of the few times when dorm halls are nearly empty. Recently a new rash of keg parties has erupted in the men ' s dorms The parties are quite unique, a keg in the shower and girls admitted free of charge The beer supply is relatively aafe for a time, but news spreads by osmosis, and soon a roadtrip to Palmyra is once again required (See: Distributor) irA ' - 1, ' 4 ' ' ■ Labs, Leisure, Lines, Lampposts Labs can make total strangers become dear friends or sworn enemies. Hurry up, dammit ' I ' m going home today. Hey watch that acid ' Oh, well, I didn ' t like that shirt anyway If you ' re a science major you might as well move your bed into the lab Everyone says leisure time can be spent goofing off on campus First of all, who came up with the brilliant idea that a Valley student has leisure time ' And second, we have to find or search for things to do, because the bustling metropolis of Annville goes to sleep every night at 9:00 No matter how early you go to dinner you always wind up at the end of the line This is due to the fact that the people in front of you always leave up their friends and their friends, friends and so on and so forth . . . Kicked out any lampposts lately ' M Miller ' s, Mail One of Annville ' s hotspots is Miller ' s Market. What a thrill it is to get your pay- check snd run down to the store for a six- pack of Tab and a jumbo box of Wheat Thins. Why IS the other guy in my box so darn popular ' ? He ' s got twenty letters to my one; I think he ' s writing to himself. Getting mail can cheer up the day and not getting it for weeks can make you want to eat worms. Ads are even wel- come at times, but the Big Two are pack- ages and love letters. In most people ' s hearts the letter comes first, but a box ranks close behind. Care packages from home make the receiver envied by every- one on the floor. N Nukes, Nightlife The Valley loses just as many new stu- dents to the fear of Nuclear holocaust as it does to an invisible cum. Thanks Met Ed for building Three Mile Island right in our own backyard. A nightlife is an extinct species. Unless of course you have a car and can escape from Annville to Mother ' s or some other form of relaxation. Every once in a while, the nightlife is exciting. For example, the Saturday night football game at Albright was a superthril- ler. Who will ever forget the electricity as the scoreboard counted down the final minutes. It was a beautiful victory, SHEER ECSTASY!!! (See; Your Place) 10 Out-of-state, Outdoors Being an out-of-state student means you try not to think too much of home; that ' s one place you ' re not going to see for a long time. Happiness is meeting someone from your hometown, homes- ickness is honking at a car with your state license tag. Being out-of-state involves defending your section of the country. Sooner or later, you ' ll wonder if the high tuition is wnrth it. As soon as the sun shines and warm winds blow, the Valley student takes to the great outdoors. If they aren ' t playing frisbee, they hit the beach on the A-field. (See; Ultimate) P Pledging, Pip, Popcorn If you are into public displays, like to wear your clothes backward, inside out and upside down, have a taste for gour- met delights, love to get up at 5:30 am, and can laugh at yourself, you are a prime candidate for fraternity and sorority pledging. Pip IS the campus hound who looks like he is on his last leg. One day he con- sumed 14 pounds of K-rations and couldn ' t walk away from that spot for two days. One of the greatest excuses for a study break is a popcorn fit. Just ask the girls on 3rd Green! ■- ' 11 Q Quarry, Quad The campus swimming hole is a great place to test out your ability to withstarid heights. Boy is that water cold, brrrrrrrrrrrrr! The Quad has many functions. Not only is it located at the center of campus, it ' s also a great place to shoot the breeze and to view the males who troop oft the A-field from practice. Gome rather ingeni- ous souls have conjured up several more uses for the Quad: howling at Green at 3:00 am,, smashing urinals from Kreider, and scribbling obscenities. (Editor ' s Note: Q also stands for the Quad and the Quittie, two excellent publications.) R Registration, Rowdy Once you have successfully completed filling out all fourteen forms in triplicate, you may move on to the final table and pray you ' ll get the okay. If not, well start all over again, (See, Frustration) People get rowdy in many different ways. It ' s their way of getting all their frustrations out of their systems after a week of papers, tests, quizzes, and lec- tures. Usually, the rowdy can be heard coming back from Rich ' s Monday, Tues- day, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sat- urday , , , : -;■ 12 9 Sheeting, Sleep, Studying Sheeting is another one ot those primal rituals that sets the traternity brothers apart from the residents. Female fresh- men always scream, slam their doors, and bolt themselves in when the guys come on the floor. The upperclass women simply ove it! While it may L true that there are still eight hours to sle after six hours of classes, three hours of playing racquet- ball with your roommate, half a dozen hours studying and a couple of hours at the Center watching the Flyers and girls, it has yet to work out. Either some pyro- maniac sets oft his latest smoke bomb in the middle of your dirty dream, or a friend from third floor wakes you up to state that a greasy towny tried to pick her up at Rich ' s (.Study ing see Procrastination.) T Tug-0-War, Tackshop, Turkey Hill Freshmen 0-Sophomore 1 . This long standing tradition is usually won by the Sophomore class. The Class of 81 , how- ever, IS the first class to totally screw up the record by not winning any, Jeans, cords, and bibs are the stand- ard dress here at the Valley. The students keep the Tack Shop in business and the ABC Football game gave the owners of the shop a ton of free advertising. The late night rowdies also enjoy tipping the cows next to the Tack Shop. The minit market is the place to go for slushes, gas, and cigarettes. 13 U Upperclassmen, Ultimate To the right is an example of the typical upperclassmen. For some reason this individual looks very similar to the typical freshman. (See: Freshman) The latest craze on campus is Ultimate or frisbee football. Instead of studying on a Sunday afternoon, everyone takes to the A-field and tosses a frisbee. Competi- tion is fierce and the stakes are high, but everyone has a great time. V Vacations, Vandalism, Valentine We love when they come and hate when they go. In the fall we live for Long Weekend and in the spring we just about die until the arrival of Spring Break. The ironic thing about all this is that we can ' t wait to come back at the end of summer vacation. Russia has communism, Spain has facism, and the Valley has vandalism. The art of destruction is not only prac- ticed by the Red Avenger and his trusty can of spray paint, but even some Row- dies go beyond gentle fun and destroy a couple of lampposts and bathrooms, A new tradition at the Valley is the elec- tion of a freshman Valentine Queen. The first queen was Sue Newman however, Scott Mailen stole the crown and decided to take all of the honors. 14 W Weekends, Wally, Weather Weekends were made for Michelob . . . and they always start on Thursday night. If there was ever a household name at the Valley it ' s Wally. This fun, loving per- son can be found at or is controlling the College Center desk. He is often decked out in a bright orange jacket and is always talking about the Flyers. Annville ' s weather is as erratic as a percolator. One day you ' re in short sleeves; the next in a heavy coat or under an umbrella. It changes at precisely the wrong time. Sudden rain storms appear only when class is a must and turns the quad into a lake and several swamps. People soon get tired of frostbite and sogginess: sunny spring days are greeted with exhilaration and a lot of bare skin, thus improving the scenery 1 00%. X Extra-Curricular, X-Rated This letter was tough to fill, so I took the liberty that comes with the job and decided to cheat. The Valley does have many extra curricular activities ranging from the yearbook to the Ice Hockey Club. If you spend four years here and say there isn ' t anything to get involved in, that isn ' t anyone ' s fault but your own. (See: Nightlife) The old saying is that pictures speak a thousand words — this goes double for the Astor. 15 u up inc fre or a : the tio ev V wl w di ire w v; fc T ti c d c ti fi c Y Your Place Your Place Restaurant is a standing favorite among Dutclnmen. Besides offer- ing the best stromboli and beer in town, the relaxed atmosphere is a great change from the high strung tensions of good old LVC. Once again, you need wheels to get there. If you go on a Friday night the place is bound to be filled up by the Val- ley. Z Zany, Zero Since none of my photographers took any pictures of Your Place, I ' ve devoted the photos on this page to all the zany, weird things we have all done as students of the Valley. I ' m sure I have missed a few things, but this will give you a chance to reminisce. Zero is the average of that pop test grade, plus the number of dates last month, plus the balance in the checking account. It ' s the temperature when you have a flat tire on your first date at the Valley, and the score with the girl when you at last show up. S i li i ' fii ' f ' Wf ft gsff. ftm x --- ' ma i 174 Yearbook epilogues generally fit into one of the following three categories; 1) PHILOSOPHICAL DRIVEL, Eloquent, bull-filled phrases charactenze their clos- ings, proving that no issue is so straightforward that it cannot be made obscure. 2) AUTOBIOGRAPHY AD INFINITUM. Written with all of the vibrance and color of a term paper, these narratives recount the production of the yearbook from begin- ning to end — or until the last reader has been bored to sleep, 3) OUTPOURING OF THANKS. Before composing such an epilogue, an editor must first consult her thesaurus to obtain every known synonym for the word thanks. Next, a complete staff list must be prepared. The third step is to match each synonym with the appropriate member (senior staffers — when we get any — always rate adjectives: eg., special thanks, deepest gratitude ). The thoughtful editor also thanks her parents for conceiving her. her school for having her, the stu- dents for funding her, and the world for being such a keen place in which to publish an annual. Rather than submit to one of these time-tested techniques for writing an epi- logue, we would like to make some personal comments about the 1 980 Quittie After listening to the bitching of a huge portion of the student body concerning the quality of last year ' s book, we decided to strive for considerable improvement This we have accomplished with the help of a small but mighty staff Our thanks to Karen.
