For 38 years Dr. George G. Struble has been a member of the faculty of Lebanon Valley College, serving as head of the Department of English for 20 years and secretary of the faculty for 33 years. During that time he has been a dedicated teacher and fervent exponent of the ideals of a liberal arts education. Well read and informed, he has become Time Maga- zine ' s most effective representative on the campus. Nine generations of students have shivered in antici- pation of and survived his shotgun tests. He has written many papers on subjects ranging from The English of the Pennsylvania Germans to The Use of Symbolism in the Language of Science, and has car- ried on a passionate love affair with the French language for many years. Last spring he was honored with an Alumni Association Citation. To the dismay of many students and faculty mem- bers, Dr. Struble will be retiring at the end of this year. The staff of the 1971 Quittie feels honored to dedicate this book to Dr. Struble with the feeling that he may appreciate its spirit. • MOODS AND FACES To tell the story of the year with the statistic and the posed photograph is to tell nothing— the es- sence of that year remains untouched. A good narration involves the capture of the human ele- ment—a person ' s feelings, his fulfillment, his dis- appointments, his aspirat ions, and the interaction of these various moods within the college com- munity and the surrounding world. Nothing betrays a mood quite so well as a candid face— it is the automatic expressionist in us. With these thoughts, the staff chose as the theme of the 1971 Quittie, Moods and Faces. o: - : ' pBfc- +- 10 II 12 They flourish in the company of others 13 I SGEfflr- ' i i3M3§59Kh£ JKMe 1 ■ ' ::■■;.. £?«3s . . . and some are framed by silence. 15 16 From adulation to solemnity. A YEAR IN REVIEW 23 Release With Spring Spring is a reawakening— the excess energy pent up through the winter, with only occasional snow fights for release, is finally let out through frolic on the quad and around the dorms. All is not play, however, for midterms have struck and finals are on the way. With this in mind, Valley students have actually been known to study. 24 25 it H.M.S. Pinafore Outstanding Success For the first time in recent years, Lebanon Valley staged an operetta, which was enthusiastically received. The melo- dramatic production would have brought tears to young girls ' eyes fifty years ago, but brought tears of laughter this spring. The outstanding production was highlighted by excellent performances from Jean McClelland, Ron Poor- man, Marilyn Whitmire, Gary Weber, and Ed Kisiel under the direction of Tom Hostetter. As the excitement and en- thusiasm rose, so did the long hours and late nights of practice. Every member of the cast was rewarded with a standing ovation. 27 The campus came to life for Fredrick P. Sample ' s inauguration. It was the official beginning of a reign begun seven months earlier which already had several achievements to its credit, in- cluding the start toward new student government. Pomp was the order of the day, as representatives from eastern colleges and universities in their academic finery joined with a full house consisting of students, alumni, and friends to install a new presi- dent. 28 Challenge and Decision With the graduation of the senior class, the campus dies for the summer. For the graduate, it is the end of his career in the ivory tower of Valley ' s campus. For some will come the challenge of still further education, while the others tackle a career they have chosen and begin facing the chal- lenge of the outside world. 29 30 Frosh Highlight Fall Fall is the official reawakening. The campus springs to life with upperclassmen, mixed in feeling about the beginning that is very familiar to them, and freshmen eager to meet the challenges of their very new environment. There are frolics of a different sort which the upperclassmen are content to watch. The frosh, busily adapting to these institutional games, classwork, and fellow students, are the leaders of the fall excitement. •S 31 rf 32 33 Sophomores Wet but Victorious One of the most intense desires on the part of both the freshmen and the sophomores is to remain dry. Toward this end the sophomore class had been known to take all the advantages, giving the frosh no quarter. Occasionally the stacked deck falls the wrong way but this year the freshmen ' s luck did not prevail. 5 35 Mingling of Past and Present Homecoming is an excitement set aside mainly for the alumni, who come to cheer an old alma mater and reminisce about when they were college students. Men in suits and women in knee-length dresses mingle with the college student of today. They enjoy the traditional foot- ball game, wonder about this year ' s strangle play, and discuss with little conclusion what the world will be- come in the hands of this hairy, rebellious generation of future alumni. A 36 4 Homecoming and the New Colony Six 39 40 The Byrds Come to LVC L V C Snowed Under Winter is a time to finish what one has been doing all semester. But when the first snow comes, all work is forgotten and a snowball fight or two of mammoth pro- portions takes place in the quad or in front of the Dining Hall. Everyone thinks more about tobogganing in the graveyard and getting warm afterward, then about the impending exams and papers. The snow and cold that brought so much fun also brought a flu epidemic, slippery, unshovelled sidewalks and hopes for an early spring. ? 42 $ r • i% - {;$ . i mm . - T 43 Bells and Belles The Christmas season is marked by the Community Christmas Service, and the Christmas Dinner Dance. Sandy Kumpf was crowned as this year ' s Christmas Queen at the Student Council sponsored evening. Everyone had Christmas parties and plenty of Christmas spirits before they left the campus for the hol idays. 44 New Decade Starts With Finals After New Year ' s, the campus filled again with students madly at work completing papers and be- ginning to study for finals. The three day reading period was spent by students finishing up work, starting to study or just goofing off. Most of us suffered through finals, often having two in one day, then spent our break recuperating and looking forward to a new semester. 45 Winter Season Adds Symposium Winter was also the time of the Mid-Year Symposium. Long lines and, once inside, a hot stuffy theatre were the atmos- phere for this introduction to The Negro in Films. Dr. Clarence Cripps led the symposium which traced the Negro image in movies from silent films to present times. Miss Ruby Dee opened the symposium with a lecture. The symposium offered an introduction to concepts and problems not covered within the framework of the regular curriculum. It provided a touch of reality in the college situation, usually concerned mainly with theories and speculations. 46 I 47 Ready, . . . Although the team did not retain the AA.A.C. championship, which it won in 1968, it was still an impressive season with the team posting an 8-2 record. The stickmen picked up three new teams, among them Penn State, a result of a conflict over division honors for the 1968 season. The team, led by captain Tom Falato, was the first to include four year veterans. These men were the pioneers of Lacrosse at the Valley. Many school records were set, both individually and as a team. The team had the most game goals— 21 against Dickinson, and the most season goals— 1 14. Dennis Misal and Tom Cestare were elected Most Valuable players. Outstanding player awards went to defensemen Joe Torre, goalie Bill Zinmerman, mid- fielders Jerry Staufer and Dennis Misal and attack- men Tom Cestare and Jim Evans. Four-year letter winners were Pete Brennan, Jim Evans, Jerry Staufer, and Tom Falato. SENIOR MEMBERS: R. West, P. Brennan, W. Zimmerman, J. Evans, S. Brandsberg, D. Tulli, J. StauHer, D. Misal, J. Mike Shanfelder and Harvey Gregory led the team in record breaking performances in the Shot Put and the 440 Inter- mediate Hurdles. John Gilman tied a previous record in the 2 mile run. The small number on the squad demonstrated that motivation and the will to win comes out on top in the end. The team shows promise for the future since both Shanfelder and Gregory are returning. Contrary to pop- ular hopes, the squad did descend lower in the loss column than previous years. The only close match was with Delaware Valley. Here in the balmy mid- April weather, the L.V. Linksmen lost a heart- breaker by one point. The rest of the larger schools in the Middle Atlantic Conference completely over- powered our small squad. This season, the returning lettermen did a good job in the essentials of driving, chipping, and putting, but the lack of depth hindered the squad. Terry Light, Mike Waltz, George Glen, Bob Dresch and Taki Bobotas were the backbone of the team. All are returning. As the Golf Team and Lebanon Valley look for- ward to another season, prospects look good with returning lettermen and freshman neophytes. Though the squad will remain small, they should present more of a threat to our MAC companions. 204 -tr ■ M .0 3. ;_ ?«i —■WW 1— g a w. 1 • ■- . J r s ■ ■■■fiis - 1 g jF f g. r S«Ul Bt. Not since 1961 had the foot- ball team won the championship, but now part of the glory that goes with winning has come back to LVC. The name of the game this year was defense, but even more so, the word team came into the picture. The team had its stand- outs and stars, but yet it was a team. This year ' s team was full of enthusiasm and desire from August 28th until the final second of the Atlantic City Classic held in Convention Hall. Although hampered by an inexperienced offense, with only three returnees from the previous year, the team never gave up hope for a championship. The defensive team played with excellence, led by co-captains Dave Murphy and George Morse. The de- fense held the opponents from scoring and the offense managed a few points in each game to win. The season was a 6 and 2 record, losing to Albright and Moravian. With this winning season, the Valley loses some valuable sen- iors who ' gave a great deal of effort to turning the LVC football seasons into a win- ning tradition which they hope will continue for many seasons to c ome. 206 Front Row: T. Under the able direction of Coach George Mayhoffer, the 1969 Cross Country season (7-4) proved to be the second best in the eight years of its existence at the Valley. Led by co-captains Terry Nitka and Harvey Gregory, the seven mem- ber team proved to be tough competition. In mid-season the team lost the services of its lead runner, sophomore John Gil- man, due to a muscle pull. Despite their loss, the team did an excellent job in the remaining meets. Freshman Jim Rebhorn and John Kinsella turned in consistent performances through- out the season along with sophomore Steve Shaffer. Fresh- man Dennis Wertz provided the high spirit and consistent ef- fort that is essential to a team sport. The 26-29 upset over Dickinson in the last meet proved to be the highlight of the season. The four defeats were from Ursinus, Drexel, F M, and Susquehanna. The team placed tenth in the AA.A.C. Championship Meet with Harvey Gregory and Terry Nitka placing 39 and 43 respectively. Prospects for the next season look good with the addition of several freshmen and the loss of only one senior. 211 Standing: Coach Walters, J. Snyder, J. Schuster, M. Keffer, J. Yeagley, K. Angstadt. The team ' s fast-moving offense scored 46 goals, half of which were driven in by right inner Barb Hall. Center forward Jan Garber and left inner Karen Angstadt were the two next high scorers, scoring 10 and 7 goals respectively. Each of the three freshmen halfbacks scored at least once. The team made a good showing at the muddy Cen- tral Penn Tournament, tying in both games. Barb Hall and Jan Garber were selected for the Central Penn I and II teams respectively, while Bobbi Harro, goalie, and Jan Shuster, left wing, received honorable men- tion. Bobbi Harro went on to compete in the Mid East Tournament, made the Mid-East II team, and then competed in the National ' Tournament held in Mich- igan. 212 LVC Opponent 8 Kutztown 6 York College 1 1 Shippensburg 1 3 Muhlenberg 2 Millersville 2 4 Elizabethtown 3 3 Messiah 1 4 Albright 2 9 Moravian 1 Gettysburg 2 2 Susquehanna 1 Row Oner A. ' s basketball team, Coach Roger Gaeckler was not particularly happy with the team ' s 7 and 13 record. With only four seniors leaving and underclassmen Kris Linde and George Petrie as high scorers, he does see some daylight for next year. It was a hard working season for the squad and the new coach. The Dutchmen dropped only three of their tilts by more than ten points. Poor play in the waning moments of each game added further to the coach ' s contention that in- experience cost us more than a few decisions. The lack of a consistent big producer hurt the Dutchmen. Only three 20- plus scoring efforts were turned in during the entire season. Two of the L.V.C. victories came over Dickinson and Johns Hopkins, two clubs who made the play-offs. When things went right for the Dutchmen, they did put all of it together. Early in the year they scored their biggest point-spread win, a 34-point margin over F M. 215 216 217 m ..v.c ffi Kneeling: Left to Right: C. Suda; R. Phillips; B. Etchberger; M. Stempkowski; T. Individual Mat Efforts Shine The L.V.C. grapplers were faced this year with a situa- tion strongly resembling that of last year. Inexperience seemed to be the major drawback for the team. As Coach Petrofes put it, Had we been able to keep the original line-up expectations on a great improvement on last season would probably have held true. Because of a number of unfortunate circumstances, mainly nine different line-ups in nine different matches, we have reverted back to the inexperienced line up of a year ago, and therefore many of the bouts I thought we could win at the beginning of the season, we have lost. After pouncing on P.M.C. 32-8 and narrowly missing a win over Elizabethtown, the inexperience was evident on the mats. Captain Ed Thomas again this year was able to chalk up quite a record obtaining the most falls in one season. Two freshmen, Tony Rubbo and Rich PhilHps, both with fine records, were also great assets to the team. With these and other matmen returning next year, the outlook for an improved team is much brighter. 218 New Rules New Hope The 1970 Women ' s Basketball Team brought some changes to Valley this year. With the acquisition of a new set of rules, that is, a complete switch to men ' s rules, and under the direction of a new coach, Mrs. Jaci Walters, the team assumed a new outlook. Their determination and desire built stamina and put speed into their game. Unfortunately, the first two games of the season were lost to the two strongest teams in the conference, Millersville and Elizabeth- town. Under the leadership of co-captains Janice Shuster and JoAnn Yeagley, the squad fought strongly for the remainder of the season, showing their improvement with each game. 220  X !?WWW!T 221 L-Club Row One: H. The staff had a lot of the latter and none of the former. We of the 1971 Quittie feel we have tried our best to make this a successful book by changing the cover and using new photographic effects. With the major changes in the 1970 Quittie as our basis, we have tried to make this year ' s book one of meaning. We hope that each individual will rediscover his most significant experiences from this past year. All of this could not have been done without the help of many people. We extend our gratitude to: Mrs. Ann Monteith, our advisor, for listening to our problems, Mr. Jack Winand, photographer, who made many extra trips to our campus; our student photographers for lending us their strong shoulders; and Mr. Ed Patrick of Taylor Publishing Company, for never being too concerned with our late deadlines.
