Time Rushing by, waiting for no one. Youth Learning in order to prepare, for tomorrow comes quickly. Leaders Each in his own way, trying to better lives. Will we do as well? Today's Youth — Tomorrow's Leaders Youth Pursuing the truth, in ways open only to youth. Involvement Shouting the awareness of young minds to all who can still listen and learn. Youth Pleading to be confided in, consulted with, eager to teach and be taught. Leaders Struggling to erase the existence of the words I don't want to get involved . Youth Conversing through actions when words fail to enter minds. Activity Satisfying, rewarding, when being done for unselfish reasons or a cause worth fighting for. Youth Defying anyone to break an unbendable spirit. Leaders Weakening under a burden of countless major decisions. Youth Determined in their own goals; driven to individual successes. Spirit Pulsating, exhilarating, binding 1,600 Warriors together. Youth Achieving because of a pleading need or a binding obligation. Youth Bewildered, confused at a sometimes cold, harsh world. Establishments Firm, upstanding, but shaken by a Modern World which sometimes forgets even the oldest commandments. Youth Reaching for a steadying grasp and finding a war they don't understand and did not create. Leaders Placing pieces of a puzzle together, trying to unite a chaotic world. Youth Here, only for an instant, gone as quickly as the seasons in which they play. Novices Looking only to the future, realizing the past is only a haunting spirit. Youth Moving onward to fill vacancies, not complaining, just accepting facts. Leaders Hoping the paths they've cleared, will be wide enough, merely guessing at the problems yet to come. 9 Student Life and Leadership Youth Searching for elusive words that say what is important and must be heard. Communication Causing endless gaps between countries, between generations. Youth Silently screaming the urgency of the present and all that it holds. Leaders Listening, but not hearing, though straining to understand. Student Body Officers Fellow Students; Along with this new decade comes a new role for the student. Young people are now being given the opportunity for new responsibilities which they are accepting with enthusiasm. We feel that the students at LUHS are not only included in this movement, but its real leaders. As we, the officers, attended Legion VI and other meetings, visiting and talking to officers from other schools, we found our school to be in the upper ten per cent. Our students are becoming aware of the fact that the students make the school. With this increasing awareness, we feel that Lebanon Union High students will strive harder and harder every year to achieve the ideals their school stands for. Because of this effort toward achievement, LUHS will produce leaders in our community, county, and state levels. As I look upon my experiences this year, I would like to thank my officers for the tremendous job they have done. They have not only done capable work, but have set an example that would make any school proud. And, finally, to you, the students of LUHS, a special thanks for being the support you were this year, a support that I will remember with pride and dignity. A. S. B. S., My year’s stay in Lebanon has been an enrich- ing one. Not only have I come to understand Americans but have also learned to appreciate them. I have broadened my life with new exper- iences and cleared all misconceptions, I only wish that you could come to Singapore and see what life is like there. You are quite right to think that life goes on very much the same way and we do have our problems too! After all, we do live on this universal planet - Earth. Lower Right: Confucius say, Clap three times . 14 Last summer in Germany I met many new ideas and attitudes, I found myself changing where it made sense, and learned to appreciate the ideas I didn’t want to change. The most valuable lesson of life I learned is that people are universal. So what if a man looks or speaks different than I? He still has ambitions and opinions the same as I do, and he has also known loneliness, happiness, and friendship whether he is German, African, or American. It is a time when the basketball teams are previewed as to their coming performances and a time when the colorful Pep Clubs of each school challenge one another in routines of excellence. Lebanon's Pep Club was envied as they shouted their theme Let's Get It All Together and did just that, winning the coveted trophy for Pep and Rally. Row Coach Gleason Eakin heading into his fifth season as Warrior chief, set out to mold a group of young, eager athletes into a single unit fit for fierce varsity compet- ition. With the leadership offered by the returning sen- ior lettermen the 1970 football program at LUHS repre- sented Lebanon in a fine manner. The Warriors opened the 1970 football season by trek- king to Bend to meet the Lava Bears. Under the guid- ance of junior quarterback Mike Rex and using the ef- forts of Dave Plagmann’s three touchdowns the Warrior offense moved in high gear all evening. A spirited de- fense led by Duane Ray and Frank Swehosky put the clamp on the Lava Bears and Lebanon came out on top 25- 12. Lebanon entertained the Ashland Grizzlies the following week in the Warriors first home game of the year. Play- ing inspired football Lebanon scored first but gave up two touchdowns before the half to trail at intermission 14 7. Defense was the key in the early part of the sec- cond half but Ashland came to life late in the third per- iod on scoring jaunts of 3 and 35 yards to ice the vic- tory. A Dan Powell to Rob Shimin touchdown pass fin- ished the scoring and left Lebanon on the short end of a 25 14 score. Defense was the name of the game when the Tribe travel- ed to Roseburg for a non-league battle with the Roseburg Indians. The Warriors tough defensive secondary led by Ron Wolfe and Gary Solberg intercepted three passes as the Lebanon defense turned back the Roseburg attack. However, a 22 yard scoring run in the second quarter by a swift Roseburg halfback proved to be enough scoring punch as the Warrior offense failed to get untracked. The final score in an excellent ball game was Roseburg 7, Lebanon 0. Lebanon journeyed south to meet the Crater Comets in their last nonleague test before the Valley League Season. Crater struck early and used a balanced attack to carve out a 20-7 halftime advantage over the favored Warriors. But at halftime a few words of inspiration fired the Tribe up and they came to in the second half looking for revenge. Behind the hardnosed running of Dave Plag- mann and Rick Hayden Lebanon retaliated for a breath- taking come from behind 21-20 win over the Comets. Coming off an exciting win over Crater, Lebanon was ready to meet North Salem and begin the always tough Valley League race. Playing on home turf the Warriors put in a sterling all-around performance. The offensive unit was paced by Rex, Hayden, and speedster Dan Hayes. Larry Summers, Pat Campbell, and a host of gang-tackling Tribe defenders held Lebanon in the game all theway. But North came from behind to score in the third period. The all-important conversion was good and the Vikings escaped with a narrow 14-13 win over the Warriors. 122 Gary Irving, Jon Powell, Mgr. Skip Collins, Coach Larry Snook, Coach Larry Turner. Row Three: Head Coach Gleason Eakin, Coach Barry Ad- ams, Rich Wetherell, Richard Brush, Wes Reynolds, Calvin Carter, Jim San- The Homecoming spirit prevailed throughout Lebanon as the Corvallis Spartans sporting a fine record and rank- ed number 2 in the state invaded Warriorville geared for combat. Both teams displayed strong defenses in what proved to be a very rugged, physical battle. Three bad snaps by the punting team were the main breaks of the game and enabled the Spartans to roll on 21-0 over the Tribe. Several weeks later Corvallis lived up to its reput- ation and won the state title. Friday, October 30, South Salem came to town to battle the Warriors. The Saxons used a strong passing attack and an equally tough defense to squelch the Lebanon attack and keep alive a 15 year jinx over the Tribe. The final score was South 36, Lebanon 0. Against McNary early Lebanon miscues opened the door for the Celtics and they hit paydirt twice for a 14-0 first quarter lead. Power running halfback Dave Plagmann banged over the goal line in the second stanza to put the Warriors on the board, but that was the only offensive punch and the Celts went on to record a 26-6 league win over the Tribe. The next week found the Tribe traveling to Albany to continue an ever-growing rivalry with the Bulldogs. Lebanon drew first blood on a nifty 22 yard reverse by junior wingback Dan Powell and took an early 7-0 lead. But with two first half touchdowns and a couple of 2 point conversions Albany took a 16-13 halftime lead. derson, Dan Powell, Mike Miller, Pat Campbell. Dave Peoples, Dave Ed- wards, Dalton Johnson, Jeff Edwards, Stan Hinderlie, Larry Summers, Joe Egner, Wayne Miller, Mgr. John Kelker, Coach Dave Johnson. In the second half fumbles, interceptions, and defensive miscues waylayed the Warriors and Albany went on to score a decisive 29-13 win over Lebanon. Several Warriors received All-District honors. Ron Wolfe was named a first team All-District defensive back. On the second team were Mark Durlam, Duane Ray, and Mike Miller. Gaining Honorable Mention were Rick Hayden, Larry Summers, Gary Middlestadt, and Dave Plagmann. The 1970 football season could best be described as a rebuilding year at LUHS. Many juniors and a large num- ber of talented sophomores return as varsity lettermen next fall. The guidance and inspiration offered by this years hard-working seniors will undoubtly be picked up by the younger Warriors and help make 1971 and future football seasons a huge success in Warriorville. 123 WK Upper Left: Junior quarterback Mike Rex prepares to fire another aerial. Coach Barry Adams instilled this word into the hearts of 13 young men who formed this years var- sity basketball team. Coach Adams, in his fourth year as Warrior hoop mentor, used the abilities of eight sen- iors and several key underclassmen to form the nucleus of a winning ball club. Included in the eight seniors were four returning lettermen whose poise and cool manner under pressure held the Warriors together in times of trouble. Late in February news of Corvallis’s forfeiture of sev- en league games shook the Valley League. Suddenly the Tribe were thrown into a three way scramble with North and South Salem for the second berth to the state basket- ball tournament. South in picking up two wins via the forfeitures held the inside track with four games remain- ing with a record of seven wins and four loses. Lebanon and North both picked up one win and improved their records to six wins and five loses, and five wins and six loses respectively. After defeating McNary and South in crucial games the Warriors lost the berth on the final night of the season when they fell to Corvallis 74-69 while South whipped hapless McNary 70-55. Early in January when the Valley League season began both coaches and players agreed that the race for the tournament would be a dog-fight to the end. In the league opener the Warriors used a tight man-to-man de- fense and disciplined offense to knock-off the number 2 rated North Salem Vikings 49-45. After losing to Albany the Warriors lost a couple of cliff-hangers to South Salem 47-44 and Corvallis 59-58 while destroying McNary at home 57-33. In the second round the Tribe had rough going and collected only two wins. They squeaked by host Mc- Nary 52-49 and massacred South Salem 67-53. But the cagers league record fell to four wins and six loses after falling to North Salem, Albany in a thriller, and Cor- vallis. Dave Copley continued on the rampage as he pocketed 27 points against South and 26 against Corval- lis. North Salem again fell prey to Lebanon as the third 134 Dave Copley, Dave Winters, Ed Snook, Monte Cook, Gary Middlestadt. Mike Cowgill, Mike Rex, Mng. Skip Collins. round began. Wayne Miller, Jeff Edwards and Dale Mid- dlestadt ignited a fourth quarter comeback to earn a 69-65 win. It was at this point in the season when Cor- vallis was forced to forfeit seven games. Although the Warriors were full of new life it would prove ironic that Corvallis would be the force to keep the Warriors from post season play. As the season came down to its last week Lebanon trailed South by one game. However they quickly solved that situation by stomping South 61-44. Ed Snook and Mike Cowgill led the second half charge with key buckets on assists from Mike Rex. The tables were set as the Warriors travelled to Corvallis to face a do or die game. The game was a tremendous battle but Corvallis used ef- fective free throw shooting to hold on and win a 74-69 game that destroyed all Lebanon hopes as South defeated McNary to win the second state tournament berth from the Valley League. Seniors lost to graduation are Monte Cook, Dave Cop- ley, Mike Cowgill, Kevin Hughes, Gary Middlestadt, Wayne Miller, Richard Wetherell, and Dave Winters. Cop- ley during his career rewrote the record books at Lebanon High, setting many individual records. For the second year he was a first team All-League selection. Also he received Honorable Mention All-State honors. Other Lebanon players gaining recognition were Mike Cowgill a second team All-League guard and Wayne Miller an Honorable Mention choice at guard. The seniors of this years varsity basketball team are the first group to go through the complete four years of basketball under the program initiated by Coach Adams. In the past four years Lebanon basketball has gone through a transition from a losing program into a highly competitive program. This fact is a tribute to the coaching staff for the immense hours they have spent developing ballplayers. With several key juniors return- ing from the varsity next year and some good sopho- more talent moving up, 1972 may just be the year when the Warriors become winners and clinch a state tourna- ment berth. 135 I Left: Well now, let's see, who do we need; Alcindor or Maravich? ponders coach Barry Adams. They fin- ished the dual meet season with a record of 8-3 (4-1 in district), second in the district tournament, and a tie for fourth in the state meet. The Warriors opened with a comfortable 30-23 win over the defending state champion Newberg Tigers, but then lost to a strong Hillsboro team, 31-24. The sting of the Hillsboro loss didn’t last long, though, as Lebanon trounced Sweet Home 34-18. The Japanese National Champions made their third visit to Lebanon this year, and they again proved too much for anyone in the state to handle. The Warriors failed to win a match although Dalton Johnson earned a tie. Lebanon opened the Valley League schedule in grand style, picking up wins over Corvallis (37-14), and North Salem (31-18). But the South Salem Saxonsdid it again, bumping off the Warriors 26-23, for the second straight year, costing Lebanon the district dual meet champion- ship. The Warriors shook it off though, as they dumped McNary 25-19, won the Lebanon Invitational, and trounced Albany’s Bulldogs 38-15. Lebanon hosted the district tournament for the first time in six years, and carried high hopes of breaking a seven-year jinx. For the past seven years they have fin- ished second in district. They were co-favorites with the Saxons this year, but they suffered a disastrous first round and had to perform some pretty fancy wrest- ling on the last day of the tourney to come off with another second, their eighth straight. Five wrestlers won district championships, and three took seconds, giving the Warriors eight wrestlers in the state meet. Gary Dahl (130), Kurt Fritz (148), Duane Ray (157), Mark Cox (178), and Dalton Johnson (191) took firsts, and Steve Ditterick (123), Bob May (130), and Howard Otta (141) nabbed seconds. Unfortunately, a couple of tough breaks hit the Warriors in the semis, as only Ray advanced to the finals to place second. However, four Lebanon matmen took consolation honors. Dahl placed third, Ditterick, Otta, and Johnson took fifths. As a team, Lebanon finished fourth in the state. Warrior hopes for next year, despite the loss of valu- able seniors, again look good. Coached by Mrs. Deborah Johnson and Miss Judith Johns, the team placed second in District, just a mere seven points out of first place. As a result however, six girls competed in nine events at the State meet. Inspired by desire plus Black Jelly Bean Awards, the girls won all their District meets. At District, Carolyn Moore, Robin Moran, Beanie Borntrager, and Madel Wardlaw broke a District record in the 880 medley relay with a time of 1:57.2. Madel also placed first in the 440, Beanie first in the 100 yard dash, Carolyn first in the 220, and Trecia Juhnke first in both the shot and the discus. Robin Moran placed third in the 220 and the 440 relay team, composed of Three: Bonnie Gibbs, Robin Moran, Madel Wardlaw, Karen Voght, Jane Lehn. Tricia Junke. Row Four: Carla Hazen, Lois Moody, Lisa Erickson, Erika Gardner, Barb Otta, Mgr. Jan McClousky, Mgr. Judy White. Moore, Moran, Borntrager, and Lois Moody placed second. It was a fine all-around performance by all the girls with fifteen girls bettering their marks in twenty- four events. Lost to Graduation will be Bonnie Gibbs, Carla Hazen, and Debby Perry, who did outstanding jobs in the field events. But with the large number of Freshman and Sophomore girls who made up the team this year, Coach Johnson is expecting great things next year. 154 Upper Left: Debbie Perry takes aim at a distant buffalo. RAIN, Coach Bill Croco’s 1971 Warriors went out to improve on their 3rd place finish in 1970. Led by Seniors, Ron Wolfe. Wayne Zurmely, Dave Copley, Terry Loree, Mike Kelly and George Slape (a Prineville transfer) plus two Junior Lettermen, Mike Rex and Rob Shimmin this high spirited team developed its way into becoming a league contender. One of the rea- sons for this was that positions left open by last years Seniors were more than adequately filled by starters Dan Hayes. Pat Hellberg and Sophomore Malcolm Ross, with back-up help from Juniors Dan Powell, Brad Kanagy, Kim Dorsing and Gary Irving. The pitching chores led by Seniors Wayne Zurmely, Dave Copley and Junior Rob Shimmin, with strong help from Seniors Terry Loree, Ron Wolfe and Junior Brad Kanagy combined to make the Warrior pitching staff the strongest in the league. Midway through the season the pitching staff had allowed only 2.33 earned runs per game. Anchoring this years infield was short-stop Ron Wolfe, third baseman Wayne Zurmely and catcher Mike Rex. Starters up from last years Junior Varsity were first base- man Pat Hellberg and second baseman Malcolm Ross with help from Dan Powell and Gary Irving. Although some were new to their positions they learned their les- son well and soon developed into a strong defensive unit. The outfield crew led by Mike Kelly, Rob Shimmin and Dan Hayes aided by George Slape and Kim Dorsing stopped many, would be, base hits with their great speed and judgement. The positions of the graduating Seniors will be dif- ficult to fill; but with nine returning Lettermen and a strong Junior Varsity, Lebanon should be a league con- tender for many years to come. 161 Upper Left: Dan Powell laughs at his own joke as George Slape and Brad Kanagy look on in disapproval. Lower Right: Dan Hayes takes his lead in getting ready for an attempted steal. 163 Baseball Baseball Freshman Front Row: Bill Pulliam, Dan Snyder, Jay Overen, Mike Woods, Craig Lohner, Jeff Rex, Buddy Dirks, Ken Ufford, Tim Standley; Row Two: Mng. Each walked their own path of values and ideals and yet dis- played a unique kind of unity. We began as Rooks back in 1967 and showed every- one up right off by being the first Frosh class to ever win the Homecoming Float Trophy. Our Sophomore year was sort of an inbetween year. We saw definite plans laid down for the construction of the Student Lounge. Our Junior year brought in the Prom. The theme Dream, Dream, Dream” was carried out in shades of lavender with Betty Collin reigning over the evening. Spring brought the election of Student Body officers from our class. John Adams was chosen as President, Wayne Miller as Vice-President, Lonnie Burt as Secretary, and Terry Bresler as Treasurer. Leading us into our Senior year was our Big Pres , Mike Burrelle, backed up by Vice-President Mike Cow- gill, Secretary Betty Collin, Treasurer Wendy Krislen, and Representatives Jacquie Duerr, Bob May, Carol Ken- agy, and Bill Potter. We started the year off good by again building the winning Homecoming float. Cheryl Anderlik was Queen, Debbie Tow, Maid of Honor, and Oli Ong, Honorary Princess. We kept up our winning streak and collected the Spirit Week Trophy. In charge of school spirit was Yell Queen Peggy Wells, who along with Debbie Parks and Pegi Barnhart led the Pep Club to their winning of the trophy at the Basket- ball Jamboree. They also took charge of spirit at the numerous other sports events. Our wrestling team fin- ished 5th in State, our basketball team finished 3rd in District after a series of consequences which narrowly kept us out of the State Tournament, and our baseball team finished 2nd in District. Winter Formal time came around and the Seniors took charge. Decorations were carried out in the Christ- mas spirit and Stephanie Stevens ruled for the evening. By this time all of us were growing attached to a very special person, Olivia (Oli) Ong, our AFS student from Singapore. Maybe it was because of her accent and maybe because of her crazy laugh and fun personality, but anyway, we’ll miss her. Spring came around and with it came many bad attacks of Senioritis”. It made it hard for us to stay in school but realizing that graduation was around the corner added a note of seriousness and made us at least try. All the sunshine and activities of Spring kept us busy. (1) We chose five girls to represent Lebanon at the Strawberry Festival; Debi Bell, Terry Bresler, Betty Collin, Pynne Looper, and Peggy Wells. (2) We chose our Senior Personalities. (3) Eight princesses were chosen to be on the May Day Court; Lonnie Burt, Carol Ken- agy, Conni Mangan, Debbie Parks, Karen Smith, Margee Woods, Peggy Wymore, and Oli Ong. Then came June and with it our last day of high school and Graduation. That’s why we’ve installed bright new Public Tele- phone Booths in and near town, at the places you’re most likely to need them. When you’re away from the house and nothing but a phone call will do, look for the nearest Public Tele- phone. They’re just waiting to help. Your Friends at LINN COUNTY TELEPHONE CO. 60 W.
