IQ FX X E C P. lUll Silllllill Tom Sawyer and his lazy, tough pal, Huckleberry Finn were up to their old pranks Friday, May 2, l947, when the Senior Class of Lebanon presented its class play at the high school gym under the direction of Kee Buchanan Groves, ia veteran of many dra- matic warsl There you discovered Tom trading off chances to help white-wash the fence, you were amused in Tom's pride in the plans for his own funeral, you enioyed Huclcs an- tipathy to shoes and soap and water, you wanted to cuff Sid, the smarty, you were en- chanted as Tom was with his new girl friend, Becky Thatcher, and a bit sympathetic with the old one, Amy, with he sauciness and her lisp. The exasperating scamp, Tom Sawyer, was played by Remmal Nivens, His part- ner in mischief, no-count Huck Finn, was well interpreted by Leon Karnbak. Jean Burns as the sharp-tongued, soft hearted Aunt Polly, had a maior role in the play. Whitey Opdylce played with relish, the part of Sid, the smoothy, Tom's brother, who was always tattling on him. Patsy Nelson, Tom's sweetheart, was a fetching lass, and it is easy to understand Tom's subiugation to her charms. Amy, the past in Tom's life, a smart little piece, with a tart charm of her own, was played by Marlys Sinclair. Paul Alley as the school teacher, and Mary Gene Gregory, his girl, supplied some old-fashioned love scenes. Elmer Fields was that rugged character, Indian Joe. Joe and Tough other friends of Tom and Huclds timeless partnership, were played by Delvan Miles and Glen Crossan. The mothers of these rascals and some neighbor women were, Mrs. Douglas, Alice L. Reck, Mrs. Harper, Oma White, Mrs. Crass, Margaret Howe, Mrs. Thatcher, Ramona Edwards. Miss Marsh, a teacher, was Eloise Groves. Her school children were, Arden Keebler, Pat Caughren, Dorothy Mayo, John Richards, Shirley Spires, Faye Keen, Clarita Grahm, Minnie Jean MacLennan, Juliann Carper, Mary Moynihan, Shirley Clendennen, Ulas Moss. Under the direction of Mrs. Helen Price, the Girls' Sextette sang a group of songs. These girls were, Anne Swanson, Orvilliss Pepperling, Barbara Pierce, Doris Groves, Betty Sommers, and Lorene Rowton. An original interpretation of several old l88O favorites was given by Doris and Dorothy Neustel, Harry and Leon Drapela. A Mrs. Ellen Wilshire, a senior class advisor, assisted with arrangements for the play. Ushers-Barbara Sherfy, .loan Humphreys, Pat Klavano, Dona Mills, Melba Cox, Diana Edes. Three seniors and three iuniors were selected from a group of twenty-five candie dates. They include: Dick Gallagher, Bob Henkle, Roy Campbell, Jerry Ray, Donald Gorman and Harlan Mastenbrook Dean Johnson was placed on the substitute list and his duties were to operate the machines if none of the other members were avail- able. It is to become an established rule that each year three new members be selected from the student body to replace those operators that have graduated from school. During the school year a total of 50 different sound motion pictures have been pro- jected to the various classes. Such interesting films as Mutiny on the Bounty, Good Earth, Gray's Elegy, and Romeo and Juliet, were shown. Pictures were ordered for every department in school with the exception of the mathematics classes. ln order to become an eligible of this group the individuals must guarantee that they will be present for every instruction meeting called by their advisor. A single un' excused absence will automatically drop the individual from the group of operators and a substitution made to fill the vacancy. This organization is strictly for seniors and iuniors who qualify or prove themselves to be worthy of the position. Special care is taken during the first few instruction meetings to emphasize the importance of taking the utmost care of the machine which they are entrusted to oper- ate. The machine itself in particular the sound movie proiectori must be handled with care at all times. Any individual who is found to be careless is immediately discharged from his duties. r 11 iui1 f ' Movrtlrriri D H'i'r ltdn l Krug D Miller, Russell Gillnvrt R Bi-vin J Crimson 7 12' resort B 'Jms S'a:rvrrrin M VV.iddelZ D Pierce 'Creole-i VN so' S. BARTELS WHITE FRYREAR lUUllllll The T946 version of the L. H. S. football team again proved to be the hard fighting outfit. The Warriors came through a hard fought schedule with a record of 2 wins, 5 losses and l tie. This record is not as bad as it sounds considering that out of the 90 would-be players that greeted Coach Bud Page only 7 were returning lettermen, but by using these seven as a base on which to build, Coach Page evolved a tough but inexperienced squad. The lineup was ever changing as new material gained needed experience. At the close of the season the lineup found line-busting Bob Downing at the fullback post. He,was aided by the capable blocking of Elmer Fields, and swivel-hipped Don Hebert, at right and left half respectively. The quarterbacking was handled very efficiently by Joe Baca. Though not noted for scoring we nevertheless had a wildcat line anchored by Co-Captain Bud Goold. Hard-hitting Jim Fryrear was our mainstay at center, with Leon Kambak, watch charm guard, finishing out the center trio. The tackles slots were filled by Bob Henkle, one of the counties most aggressive tackles, and Dick Gallagher, who gave a good account of himself for his first year out. The end positions were filled by Co-Captain Dick ISticky Fingersl Hobbs and J. T. Hamilton who played a rugged hard-hitting game whether on offense or defense. Reserve backfield men were headed by Paul ltissue paperl Alley, who because of many iniuries saw very little action. Gene Tanner, another hard-hitting backfield man, saw action in almost every game. Al Thexton, punter supreme, handled these duties very effectively. Chuck Gram was one of our hardest fighting backs and was always ready to carry a practice game out for another half or so. Though a bit smaller than his rival, Bob Downing, Bob Red Osterman saw a lot of action at the fullback post. At quarterback Allen Frum proved that he was a bay to be watched in fcture years because he was a very capable ball handler. Sid and Jerry Bartels were those twc small scrappy ends ready for a tight either with each other or any one else who wanted to step up. Ready to take over in case of any trouble were Bud Barr, Paul Harden, and Dick Duncan. Guards and line busters all were Bob Miles, Lloyd White, lNally Campbell, and Jim Warnke. Centers Don Hostetier and Dick Haughton were keeping Jim Fryrear on his toes. Last and very near to being least were the three managers, we're only kidding, boys, led by Speedball Joe Abbott, with Lightning Ken Gallagher, and Gluetoot Hugh Herron right behind him, way behind, that is, but all joking aside, these boys did prove invaluable when it came to collecting equipment, rubbing sore muscles, fixing cleats, and all the trivial iobs that a manager has to do. Highlights for the season may well be the Sweet Home and Cottage Grove games. ln the Sweet Home game it was proven that Lebanon really could win games and against a fairly good ball club. ln the Cottage Grove game it was again proven that Lebanon was an improved team over what they were at the first of the year when they tied the powerful Cottage Grove Lions, lost year's Tri-County champions. Lebanon also received recognition on the Tri-County all star team when Bud Goolci was named an all star guard. Lettermen this year were: Bud Goold, Dick Hobbs, Charles Gram, Joe Baca, Leon Kambak, Bob Downing, Elmer Fields, Paul Alley, Bob Henkle, J. T. Hamilton, Dick Gal- lagher, Sid Bartels, Lloyd White, Don Hostetler, Bob Miles, Paul Harden, Bud Barr, Jim Fryrear, Gene Tanner, Don Hebert, Al Thexton, Jerry Bartels, Dick Houghton, Wally Campbell, Bob Osterman, Allen Frum, Dick Duncan, and Jim Warnke. After a rugged district battle in which Lebanon lost only one game, that being a irriri,-r in which Corvallis won by only one point an their home court, we came out on tri and thus earned our way tothe State Tournament being he-ld this year at MacArthur it. ft rn Eugene. At the state tournament the team did not tore as v-.ell as they did the previous A it when we took tourth place. With Tom Juza, Jerry Bartels, Joe Abbott, Harry Drapela, Don Hastetler, Remmal Nivens, and Ken Sims forming the nu- cleus of the team it was easy to work the following into a winning ball club: Al Frum, a strong backboard man from Sweet Home, Les Wells, a dependable forward from Sisters, Ore., Murray Brownhill from Vernonia, and Mearle Christensen, and Rudy Kel- lisan, one ofthe most improved players on the team, up from the Bth grade team. Since the B squad furnishes future A squad material we stressed a fast run- ning attack, hard driving play on the backboard, and a fast shifting defense, the Pa- pooses worked on the style as their older brothers, the Warriors. By the time the first game came along the Papooses were ready for plenty of action and lots of games. Led by Captain Tom Juza and fireball Jerry Bartels who scored l74 and l62 points respectively, the team rolled up 988 points to their opponents' 847 and .won l8 and lost I2 out of 30 games played, playing such teams as Jefferson, Harrisburg, Shedd, and Monroe A squads, and Salem Jr. Var. Highllighting the most successful season in several years was the defeat of the Corvallis B squad for the first time in seven years by the score of 33-lo, a Sl-44 defeat of University Hi B squad, and de- feating the strong Mill City A squad on their own floor for the first time this year by the score of 30-25. ' This year for the first time numerals were authorized by the student council for B squad participation. Next year for the first time there will be a regular schedule for the B squads within District 7 and a trophy awarded to the championship team. Those players winning numerals for the first time are: Senior, Remmal Nivens, Juniors, Tom Juza, Harry Drapela, Ken Sims, and Don Hostetler, Sophomores, Jerry Bartels, Al Frum, Wally Campbell, Bob White, Dick Haughton, Joe Albott, and Let. At the time of this writing the Warrior ballplayers have a percentage standing of .500, having won five and lost five. The baseball squad was hit very hard by last year's graduation, Thus with only three returning lettermen a large number of new faces appeared on the diamond when Coach Bud Page had his first official practice. In spite of having such a great number of inexperienced players the team has slowly improved, from the greenhorn bunch that it was and looked like ot the first of the season, to where it is now, a smooth and hard working club This evolution of the ball club is very evident, having won three games in a row, at this writing, from Corvallis, Toledo, and Sweet Home. A quick glance at the roster finds Paul Alley, two year letterman, to be the only experienced pitcher. Paul Alley is one of the best chuckers in the Willamette Valley and his heavy hitting has proved a boon to the club. Bob Downing our versatile catcher and also a very hefty hitter, is playing his second year at this toughposition. The third letterman and only one in the outfield, is Claire Reeder who turns in a bang-up perform- ance at his position of left field. At first we have Les Wells, a very capable player and in years to come will undoubtedly be a valuable asset, At second we have Jerry Bcirtels, who also did some very fine pitching for the local club, He has also turned in o very good record at second. At the first of the year 45 hopefuls were seen logging aroung the home- made track. By the end of the year, however, this number had greatly reduced to a faithful, hardworking i8 members. As there were no experienced lettermen, due to the absence of track in previous years, all meets were new to the thinclads, but under the able coaching of Earl Gerfen, the Warriors showed improvement with each meet. Outstanding ability was shown by C'ayton Garrett in the 440, Jack Haynes in the mile, and Larry Klang in the shot-put. Clayton Garrett and .lack Haynes were elected co-captains for the i947 season. Although hampered by inadequate equipment, the spikemen hope to see more im- provements with the next years. The schedule was rather full for the first year, but the Warriors eked out wins in two dual meets and garnered a third in the district meet.
