Tl Smiamdauplaq The i945 Senior Class play, The Bargain Bride, a rollicking three-act farce, was presented in the high school gymnasium, on April 24, 1945 to a capacity crowd. The scene of action was the apartment of two college youths, who were having considerable diifficulty in straightening out the dilemmas in their private lives. To straighten out the difficulties of being married within eight hours in order to save a for- tune, and for a boy to become a lady in even less time to win a 55,000 award, took the combined efforts of the eleven members of the cast and the director, Miss Schiltz. After being prop- erly initiated they settld down to become members of Lebanon High School. With Miss Phibbs as their class advisor they chose the following officers: President, Jack Hyder, vice-president, Cedric Wallace, secretary, Caroll Penfold, treasurer, Bob Bouman, class representative, Bob Fisher. This year proved to be an excellent one with good partici- pation in social activities. - The following year the Sophomores took an active part in athletics, band, glee and school clubs. Under the odvisorship of Miss Ender they elected their class officers. They were, President, Don Davidson, vice-president, Bill Miller, secretary, Margaret Smith, treasurer, Curtis Coe, sergeant-at-arms, Erwin Wilkinson, class representative, Ramona Iverson. From the beginning the Junior year was designated to be an outstanding one. Under the able leadership of class advisors, Mrs. Wilshire and Mr. Butler, President Bill Peden, Vice-president Tony Solberg, Secretary Janet Durst, Treasurer Caroll Penfold, Sergeant-at-arms Richard Bartels and Class Representative Cedric Wallace the year was very successful. After raising money the necessary funds they sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom, under the chairmanship of Janet Durst. The theme, Dreamboat, was effectively carried out and music was provided by a band from Camp Adair. The grand march was led by Queen Ann and her court of six princesses. This year, as in previous years, found outstanding athletes, excellent choral groups and grand repre- sentation in all school activities. On September 25, 1944, 87 seniors began their last year, secretly a little sad but with equal enthusiasm. They got off to a good start with advisors, Miss Schiltz and Mr. Brenner, and by electing, Bob Olds, president, Douglas Smith, vice-president, Betty Southwick, secretary, Izetta Richards, treasurer, Bill Peden, sergeant-at-arms, Don Ellis, class representative. As a result of fine class cooperation, several successful dances were given, the best being the Christmas dance. The Senior play, Bargain Bride, presented April 24, was a fast-moving, hilarious play. It was capably directed by Miss Schiltz. May ll, Queen Betty ll and her court of six princesses, Lorraine Baker, Izetta Rich- ards, Betty Irvine, Helen Fiala, Ruth Ford, and Phyllis Miller reigned over the May Day celebration. Baccalaureate took place on June 3 and commencement on June 6 with 93 gradu- ating-ten of whom are in the service. It is with considerable thought to the future and a backward glance at the past four years the seniors, half-regretfully, leave Lebanon High for success in the future world. 'r '. There is a squad member at each main door, fire extinguishers, two members at each hose, and several to check rooms to have windows closed, lights out, and doors closed. , At the beginning of the year all equipment was checked, so worn parts could be replaced. Fire extinguishers were refilled and broken loose for immediate use. Hoses were tried under pressure for breaks and recoiled for easy handling. Fire drills have been under all kinds of conditions. Drills with no parts ot the build- ing blocked took one minute, five seconds. South entranfe blocked off the drill was one minute, twenty seconds. One of the best drills was sounded during an assembly when all students and teachers were in the gymnasium. lt took one minute, twenty-tive seconds. The state fire inspector and city fire chiel praised the smooth corordination of the fire squad during a drill given for the inspectors. Alt er the drill talks by both the inspector and chief were given to fire squad members on new equipment, ways of getting out of the building faster, and mainly safety first. lnspection of all the school buildings were made by ins '-ectors to find out the tire hazards around the school. After rnuch delaying the G.A.A. finally got a start soon after mid-year. its elected officers were, President Janet Whelan, Vice-President Clarnell Bryant, Secretary Betty Wooddy, and Treasurer Alma Smith. Their first function was the sponsoring of a dance after the Sweet Home basketball game, which was very successful. Their pot luck supper, held in the home economics building, also turned out to be a sumptuous affair and vvas attend by a large portion of the G.A.A. members. The entertainment was afforded by couples doing individual performances. After the entertainment all retired to the kitchen and proceeded to clean up the dishes and straighten up the building. The G.A.A. has ordered the letters and awards for deserving members and are looking forward to their arrival. They held a doughnut sale and earned part of the money to pay for the letters. A girl has to earn TOO points before she can become a member and due to the inactivity of G.A.A. last year, many of the girls didn't have enough points this year, but hey are all looking forward to being members in the coming year, and hoping to earn their awards then. -l r :- l l il 4 X lllkll g e -xv ffT i Z li e:-genes A A fe khvxrl-YT'- 'P'li 5 fgA -::--- -r-l -A veelff ,,, EL X -. f . Recognized as one of the top eight teams in the state, the Warriors piled up the impressive record ot seven wins and one loss in the season's play. They scored a I , total of IO6 points while the opponents made only 5l. The local boys were victorious , in their first seven games and as Northern Division champions in the Tri-County League is they lost out to the southern champion, Cottage Grove, in a playoff game. Led by a quartet of backs who could block, tackle and run, all with equal ability, and helped along by a heavy, powerful line, the Warriors iust had too much power for opponents to overcome. The Lebanon gridsters used a power type of offense, with just enough trickery to keep the other team guessing. The biggest share of ball l carrying was handled by Captain Bill Peden at fullback and Dave Powell at haltback. f T Bill was by for one of the outstanding fullbacks in the state and his ability to hit the line with the power of a locomotive, mode him a very consistent ground gainer. Most if of BilI's yardage was gained through center or inside tackle while Dave made his yard- age outside tackle and on end runs. Dave proved to be a workhorse and he never y knew when to stop driving. Both of these boys, by the way, were selected on the Tri-County All-Star team and were truly deserving of this award. The two other backs for Lebanon included Jess Ingram at quarterback and Dean X t -X Ward at halfback. .less proved to be an outstanding field general on the gridiron and 'l A , this ability coupled with his savage blocking labeled him as an important cog in this I t grid machine. Jess has been selected as captain of the i945 team and great things kg l are expected from him next year. The guard spots were filled by Art Cobb and Denny Marvin two boys who made the center of the Lebanon line as formidable as a stone wall. Art was after the fifth man in the opponents' backfield and if they got by Art, they were met by Denny who backed up the right side of the line and tackled for keeps. Tony Solberg and Paul McCracken held down the tackle positions and they were two of the best tackles in the league. Tony was playing his second year at tackle and very little yardage was made through his side of the line. Paul was playing his first year at tackle but he learned quickly and always made it tough for his opponents. The end positions were filled by Lynn Hamilton and Kenny Haughton. Both of these boys were tops, Lynn for his great defensive work and pass snaring ability and Kenny for his wonderful blocking and ability to clear the way for the backs to follow him. These two boys will be back again next year to heckle opposing teams. The reserves came in for a great deal of attention too, and without them the suc- cess of the team would not have been so great. The following boys, besides the ones named above, earned the Lebanon L , Don Brown, quarterback, Joe Elkins, halfback, Ron Cox, halfback, Don Ellis, fullback, Gay Baldwin, center, Bud Goold and Denny Canny, guards, Ross McCormick and Larry Christian, tackles, Stan Worland and Dick Hobbs, ends. His errorless playing afield and good hitting at bat marks him as a player who will bear watching in the future. Ced Wallace, the talkative second baseman, is one of the most improved players on the team and his leadership in the infield keeps the boys constantly playing heads-up ball. T The third base duties are shared by two boys. Joe Elkins handles the hot corner while not on the mound, and when Joe makes a throw to first after scooping up a hot grounder, it always gets to Lynn's mitt with plenty. of gusto. The other boy playing third is Willis Moody, a transfer from Newport. Willis is coming along nicely and has shown himself to be a capable replacement when Elkins takes the mound. At short-stop, red-headed Jess Ingram struts his stuff and there is not a faster in- fielder in this district. Jess covers lots of ground from his position and has robbed many teams of sure hits because of this speed. ' ln the outfield, sophomore Paul Alley holds down the left field garden spot and due to his promising playing this year both in the field and at bat, he is labeled as a boy to watch in the next two years. The center field spot is patrolled by Ray Ayers, a fast fielding, hard-hitting senior letterman. Ray has one of the strongest throwing arms seen on any fielder this year and very few teams try to get extra bases when Ray has the ball. The right field iob is handled by three boys-Don Ellis, Tony Solberg, and Dick Hewett. Because of his power at bat, Don plays in right field when not pitching, but when he is on the mound, the right field iob is capably take care of by Tony and Joe. Both are equal in playing ability and although this is the first year of varsity baseball for both boys, they are doing a swell iob. A Other boys who have seen action but are not necessarily starters as yet are Denny Canny, reserve catcher and outfielder, Ron Cox, reserve outfielder, Don Brown, reserve outfielder, and Elmer Fields, reserve infielder. The Lebanon Warriors rank as one of the leading teams in the state and at the present time are on top in district play and should they finish the seasorf in this po- sition it will be the third district championship annexed by Coach Bud Page's boys this year. The Lebanon team put a stop to the domination of the Corvallis Spartans as I y leaders in-District 7, and the completion of district play found the local boys on top with , the Spartans in second place. In the playoffs with Newberg, district 8 winners, the Q P! , Warriors dropped two games 27 to 35 and 25 to 33 and were thus kept out of the state g l tournament. V Although the Lebanon team did not represent this district in the tournament at Salem, the boys did boast a record comparable to any team at Salem. The Warriors L 'X emerged victorious in 17 games out of a tough 24-game schedule, and scored a total of 884 points to 731 for the opponents. The red clad local team employed a fast breaking style of offense which proved to be both interesting and exciting to watch I from the spectators' viewpoint, and the local gym was always filled to capacity for the rf many thrilling games played at home. . At the completion of the season, Coach Bud Page awarded the varsity L to lO 'l vf, members of this championship ball club and each boy was, in his own right, an asset to , ' 'lf the basketball team. Cedric Wallace, captain and forward, led his team brilliantly l 411, and his steadying influence was an important factor in the team's success. Dave was l 1 if it by KE second high scorer on the team this year with 2i3 points and he culminated the season by being unanimously chosen on the District 7 All-Star team. At center was sophomore Ron Cox, third high scorer on the team and an excellent backboard man. Ron made -most of his points via his accurate left hand, and in future years Ron is expected to make quite a name for himself on the maple court. Dean Ward, diminutive guard, played good ball throughout the season and despite his size he was one of the best defensive players in the league. His speed enabled him to check closely and his man found it difficult to get shots, away. At the other guard was Lebanon's high scorer, Lynn Hamilton, who scored a total of 227 points for the season. Lynn, captain-elect for next year, was the second boy to make the District 7 All-Star team and like Dave, his choice was also unanimous. Lynn's height enabled him to be an effective backboard man and great things are expected X of Lynn in his senior year. . Kenny Haughton and Dick Hewett, reserve forwards, played outstanding ball ' throughout the season and both boys will be counted on heavily to carry the load next year. Bill Peden, reserve center, proved to be a more than capable replacement and his V ability to come through when the going was toughest made him a very valuable player RJ on the team. The loss of Bill to the Air Corps at the close of the season crippled the team a great deal and with him in suit the chances for making the tournament at Salem would have been much better. At the guard spots were two husky young reserves who knew their way around the ma le court. Art Cobb and Ga Baldwin were both ver effective men on the fx P Y Y maple court. Art Cobb and Gay Baldwin were both very effective men on the back- board and their entrance into the game didn't hinder the team's winning ways at all. Two other boys who were on the A squad but failed to earn letters were Don Brown and Willis Moody. A Bob Olds and Denny Marvin were the highly efficient managers and much thanks should go to them for their hard work. Bob was cheated out of a chance to play on l' , L the team this year because of a physical handicap, but he liked the game so much that I xx he volunteered to be manager and did this iob in a very commendable fashion.
