The staff, in presenting this book, wishes to record the events of the school years 1943-44. WARRIOR - 1944 .fslfanon cglagoof The graduating class of 1944 bids farewell to the school that holds so many happy memories for them. Lebanon High School is noted for many factors, the most important among them being, scholastic achievements, historic features and beautiful campus. The campus is one of the few natural campuses in the state and is considered the most beautiful. The historic features of the school are numerous. The bell that was shipped around Cape Horn was first used in the historic Santiam Academy and is now rung when Lebanon is victorious in an athletic contest. The Class Rock that stands on the southeast corner of the campus, designates that area is being part of the Old Oregon Trail. One of the few Cedar of Lebanon trees in existence stands in the southeast portion of the school grounds. WARRIOR - 194Q Dacficablon In honor and appreciation to those of our alumni and former schoolmates now in the armed forces, We sincerely dedicate this Annual. n NT, M u . But the class of '44 realizes only too well that the memories of the past four years must end. Throughout the four years the class has been in school, many of its members have made definite outstanding contributions in the many activities. On the Lebanon Campus, in the fall of 1940, one hundred ten green freshmen appeared. During the first few Weeks of school the freshmen's time was very much occupied by getting acquainted and adapting themselves to high school life. The so-called greenhorns were duly initiated by the upper- classmen about the second month of school. The boys were compelled to dress as girls and the girls as boys, at an assembly conducted by the upperclassmen. Like the freshmen classes in the past, no year was complete with- out a party in the fall and a picnic to end their first year. In the fall of '41 our greenhorns came back as sophisticated sopho- mores. Members of the sophomore class took part in athletics, band, Hi-Y, Glee, Girl's League, and many other activities of the school. I During the middle of the year they Went to Albany on a skating party, Which was later followed by other classes. The junior class of '42, although hampered by war time difficul- ties, came through with ,its share in the fields of music and athletics. One of its members, Clinton Pearson, was selected as the left tackle in the Tri-County League All Star football eleven. They were very active in various school clubs with many mem- bers participating in the band, Hi-Y, Drama Club, and others. More- over, nearly every junior was a member of the newly introduced Victory Corps and did their share in the bond and stamp campaigns. The main event, being the junior-senior prom, displayed the theme of Arabian Nights. Louise I and her court of four princesses reigned over the evening's affairs. A I On September 21, 1943, the seniorstook up their books and entered the halls of Lebanon High School for their last but most successful year. , WARRIOR 1944 One of the successes Qflthe year WGS he Semor play presented on Thursday afternoon cmd Frlday even1ng December 16 and 17 It was dlrected by M1ss Ender U I The seruor dance on February 4 was a combmauon of dancmg and party games The class was grftecl w1th a mckelodeon whlch was used for the f1rst trme that even1ng On March 24 all personalltles showed themselves when the ma Jortty of semors took part 1n a dress up day ,Aprxl 21 w111 see the semors m Salem on a Frlday n1ght skatlng party Baccalaureate w111 be on May 21 followed by commencement on May 24 That half glad half sad feelmg descends upon the semors when they realxze there wont be another year for them at I.. On December 7 there was a special assembly commemorating Pearl Harbor at which the band played many patriotic tunes. They played at May Day, graduation, and the football and basketball games. They made us all proud of them at the March concert. Mr. Bates left for the Army in November and the band is under the direction of Miss Iulia Barnum at present time. Mr. Bates is missed by all but Miss Barnum is to be congratu- lated on her success in directing the band. Three of the band members are in this year's graduat- ing class. They are Betty Stryker, saxaphone, Grace Laid- law, clarinet, and Betty Brown, French horn. The officers ot the band this year are Gene Durlam, presi- dent, Rodney Cox, vice-president, Ioan Voegelein, secretary- treasurer, and librarian, and Norman Weekly, student director and manager. Gene Durlam left for the Navy this year, so Rodney took over the post as president. We all miss Gene for he has been with us for four years and was one of our best cornet players. The students enjoyed the playing of the Dance Band im- mensely. lt played for all our student dances until we ac- quired a nickelodeon and we hope that they will play for us again next year. WARRIOR- 1944 WARRIOR - 1944 The school year just past saw the Lebanon I-Ii-Y Club en- joy one of its most successful years since the founding of the organization three years ago. Riding on the crest of a treas- ury fund which was well over the S100 figure, the boys felt free to carry on many projects that were of benefit both to the club and the school. Perhaps the outstanding project for this year was the car- rying out of an idea to establish school dances on a more suc- cessful basis through the medium of better music. In attain- ing this end, the boys originated the idea of purchasing a nickelodeon to be used for such purposes and in further carry- ing out this idea, the club made a S100 contribution for the purchasing of the music box. Assisted by' the school-board and the Senior class, this project was completed and Lebanon High School now has a fine jute box pouring forth provoking rythms for all the students to enjoy. Some of the other projects carried out by the club, in- cluded an all-school dance which was a huge success, partici- pation in Easter Sunrise Services, sending of delegates to a regional conference at the Swan Island Shipyard in Portland, the winning of a basketball tournament held between neigh- boring clubs at Albany, and general service offered the school during the year. The pur- pose of the club is to make rules and regulations concerning the actions of its members and to help in any way to further the betterment of the school. Initiation of new members was held in Ianuary and at that time all new football lettermen were taken into the club. A hilarious evening of entertainment was held and the ini- tiates truly felt themselves fully initiated when the night ended. ln an effort' to curb rough house tactics in the halls, the Lettermen's Club conducted a campaign at mid year to halt such actions and after a few weeks effort, they felt that con- ditions were much better and the student body as a whole recognized the fact that the Lettermen were serious about this work. It is hoped that in future years the Lettermen can band together in an organization that will be recognized as one of the leading groups in the school. WARRIOR - 1944 boys with little or no football experience at all. The returning lettermen were Don Davidson at tackle, Bob Crandall at cen- ter, Ralph Cooper at end, Lynn Hamilton at tackle, less ln- gram at halfback and Erwin Wilkinson at fullback. Of this sextet, only Davidson was a starter from the championship team of the year before. This green but hard working squad of footballers car- ried the colors of Lebanon through a season of 7 games on con- secutive weekends and came out of the campaign with a record of 2 victories and 5 defeats. These figures do not tell the true story, however, as the Lebanon Warriors played a thrilling and never-say-die brand of ball all season and gave the record breaking number of spectators at Newport Field many an exciting moment in the four home games played this year. The boys are all to be commended on their fine spirit and team play and each boy, whether he be a first-stringer or a substitute on the bench, is deserving of high praise be- cause of his excellent work despite the handicap of little ex- perience. Lebanon opened the season with a well earned victory over Toledo 21 to 15 but the next weekend the Warriors jour- neyed to Portland to take on the strong and unbeaten Rams of Central Catholic and the Lebanon boys were soundly trounced 53 to 0. Not only were the local boys humiliated in score by the strong Portland team but a number of the boys were injured so severely that the team was never at its top strength for the rest of the season. The next weekend an in- jury riddled but strong-hearted group of Warriors tangled with the Sweet Home Huskies on the local field and managed to eke out a 7 to 0 victory over the favored neighboring team. Dallas high school found Lebanon in a decided slump the next weekend and proceeded to spank the boys from the Strawberry City by a 26 to 8 score. ln an effort to find a line- up that would click, Coach Bud Page shook up his starting lineup in the week that followed the Dallas game in prepa- ration for the game with the Tigers of Iunction City. Lebanon played outstanding ball for three quarters, but weakened in the last quarter and allowed lunction City to push over two touchdowns and win 14 to 6. X The annual battle with the Bulldogs from Albany was next on the Lebanon schedule and this classic was played before a record crowd at Newport Field. After a scoreless first half in which the Warriors more than held their own with the heavy visiting team, the Bulldogs came back in the last half and by use of sheer weight and power wore the lighter Lebanon team down and pushed across two touchdowns to win by a score of 12 to U. The last game on the schedule was with the strong Bamgztlfaff ,, straw wmuuon - 1944 University High:S.chool team .-from-'Eugeneiwho .emerged vic torious 32 to 7: The Warriors gave the Campus team the scare of-their lives for the first three quarters and: with 8 minutes to go. in the last quarter, the Lebanon boys :were on the long end of a .7- to 6 count, but. at this point the .southern visitors started throwing passes from--every angle: land' completely awedvthe Warriors with thisfdisplay of -aerialxpower-. Before the final gun 'soundedxthe University 'High team had pushed across four touchdowns and piled up 32 points while Lebanon had to remain content -with .its 'seven -points L The coveted Lebanon L ,was presentedfto .25 players and two managers at the close of the season',,and,o,fQ,t-his group only 6 are graduating seniors, ,s0.CQClEh Bud..Page'Fwill,have a host of lettermen available for the start o.f.,the.,.l.944 season Those .boys receiving letters were as followsg.,Seniors: Bob Crandall, Ralph Cooper, Ralph. Schrouder,,.Cene Durlam, Mel Solberg and Ierry Baker, Iunior-sz ,Bill,Pedem.5, tEnwi:n,Wilkinson Cedric-Wallace, Richard Bartels, Denny Ganny, ,Don David son, .Tony Solberg, Richard chelson, Ross McCormick and Bob Olds. Sophomores: less Ingram, Paul, McCracken, Denny Marvin, Kenny Haughton, Lynn Hamilton, Dean Ward, Dave Powell and Art Cobb. -Freshmerrzt-wRon'-1Cox:'ffMcinagers: Bob Iohnson and Doug Smith With the advent ,of Basketball, Coach Bud Page found himself fade to face' with the same problem that had confronted him in football-lack of experienced players. Although four lettermen were on hand, 'only two of them,' Captain Ralph Cooper andsophomore Lynn Hamilton were starters from the year before while 'Bob Olds and Cedric Wallace, the other two lettermen, had just seen enough action the year before to earn their letters but were , not experienced veterans at the game Lack of heightiwas. another discouraging factor as Hamilton was the only boy who stood over the 6 foot mark and the oth ers were considerably lacking in altitude In spite of these shortcomings, the Warriors had a suc cessful season and their aggressive and fast breaking style of ball caused many a headache for opposing teams and-fpro vided many a thrill for the spectators. Lebanon played '18 games during the course of the season and the close of the sport foundinheiteanizvwith a record of 8 victoriesland 10 de ieats. .Tilaegthiglmlight Qflithe season was the fact that the War riors wonetwoimutz of thlfree games from the Albany Bulldogs, a feat that- has notibeen :accomplished around here for a number 1 all: Mft. . .. .wr ' .,.l' 1 1. Perhaps the outstanding game of the season was one played against Toledo on the local court in which the Mudhens emerged victorious 29 to 27 but only after two overtime ses- sions had been played. Lebanon finished third in district competition this year be- hind Corvallis and Toledo. Two boys, Ralph Cooper at ior- ward and Lynn Hamilton at center, were placed on the All- district second team and Hamilton was third high scorer with a total of 67 points in league play. Of the 8 boys receiving letters only one boy will be lost by graduation. Ralph Cooper, captain of this year's team is the only departing senior but his ball playing ability will be sorely missed when the 1945 season rolls around. Ralph proved an excellent team leader and his spirit and sportsmanlike manner in competitions label him as one of the best ever to wear a Lebanon uniform. The following boys received letters at the close of the season: Seniors: Captain Ralph Cooper, Iuni- ors: Bob Olds, Cedric Wallace tboth Co-captains for the 1945 seasonl, Bill Peden: Sophomores: Dave Powell, Lynn Hamil- ton, Dean Ward, Freshmen: Ron Cox: Managers: Bill Conner and Bob Downing. 7 The season's summary is as Lebanon .....................,,.,.,..,.,,.
