Men of few words are the best men. A winner never quits, A quitter never wins. 4 1 5 f n A The History of the Senior Class of '27 5 :T Like bold buccaneers of old the class of '27 broke into High School in '23 with a crew of seventyfnine very modern and intellectual pirates. As pirates must have leaders, like everyone else, we chose for our Captain, Mylin Ross, alias Pink , for first mate, Marjorie Bangham, otherwise known as Marg , secretary, Warren Young, and guard of the Treasure, Ike Dakin. Of course, being green, we were treated unmercifully by the veterans, but we showed ourselves worthy of honor, by good sportmanship and school spirit, not to mention our contributions to athletics and the Honor Roll. At the end of the year there was considerable storm on the high seas, which swept over our ship, washing a few over board. As Sophomores we regained much of our dignity which had been badly shaken by said storm and went through the second year full sail ahead. We were the most talked of class in school, being admirable for our ability in every line of athletics, class work, and social duties. The annual storm this year was not so bad and we lost very few of our shipmates. We sailed down upon the Junior year with a crew of thirty-'one and proceeded to elect a secretary and treasurer, namely Irma Thompson, and Mildred Weaver. This year we could honestly boast of our contributions to L. H. S., among which were eight football men, five basketball men, three basketball girls, two Honor Club students, fifteen members of Los Alumnos de Comercio, two in the Home Economics Club, one of the Light staff, ten on the Annual staff and sixteen in the operetta. Besides these numerous contributions we claimed the fastest typist of all the High Schools in southwestern Ohio and the winner of the High School Oratorical Contest. On top of all these activities we held various money making functions all through the year. With the money we had earned by the sweat of our brow we had the customary Junior' Senior banquet and along with some very hard work we had a corking good time. And now we are Seniors. What terror yet what pride we have in accomplishing our last achievements for the sake of our dear Old Lebanon Hi! Among these achieve' ments we may mention a few of which we are justly proud. For instance, we have seven football men, four notorious basketball men, one basketball girl, six Honor pupils, fourteen in Los Alumnos de Comercio, and twelve in the operetta. We are going out soon, leaving our burden to be taken up by the next class and we take great pleasure in the thought that we have straightened out a great many problems which have been cast off with the rest of our burden. The Class Prophecy After living in Hollywood for twelve years, taking part in numerous productions, I came back to Lebanon for a visit. At a Missionary Meeting, I met Mary Elizabeth Scofield, a class friend, who is the proprietor of the East End Grocery. We spent a very gossipy time over the accomplishments of our fellow classmates. And the things she told me! Did you know Mylin Ross holds the record for pulling more teeth in one minute than any other dentist in the world? And Bernice james is a member of james Ray's Red Headed Review. Mary Lib saw her with her own eyes. Bob Williams is still a bachelor, the Beau Brummel around town. And Margaret Alice Blair runs a Tea Room on Broadway which is the most popular place in town. Did you know that she's married? Yes, she married an agent for the Eco'Thermal Stove Company. And Bill Foley-you remember he spent his childhood on the farm-well, he developed into a veterinary. Irma Thompson is famous for her illustration of a fashion strip entitled Irresistable Irma, running in the Woman's World. I heard that Paul Dakin, after his famous quartette sang before King Alfonso of Spain, married a blackfeyed Spanish girl and is living somewhere over there. Everybody's talking about Mildred Weaver. Her portrait called A Perfect Picture , painted by some famous artist is hanging in the London Art Gallery. Mary Lib said she saw Marion Loer working in one of those big Dow Stores fthat are supposed to have drugsj. You remember Marjorie Bangham. Well, she's following Mrs. Berry's teaching and is leading actress for A Night in Paris showing in all the leading cities along the coast. We went to see Barnum and Bailey's Circus which was in town and who do you think we saw? Robert Wills as Jolly Bobby in a side show! And you know the famous designer Muriel, who ranks with Patou? She's the one we used to know in the class of '27. And did you see that notice in the paper about Lawrence Shawhan? Why, it said he had committed bigamy, but I guess it was disproved as he sued the paper. He's awfully wealthy now. My friend told me about a newly opened beauty shop, run and owned by Madamoiselle Naomi Goodwin. The patrons are from the most exclusivesociety. The attempt to carry out the fortune told by Mrs. Burns, led Paul Harrold to India. Can you believe it, he married an Indian woman and he is at home on East Silver St. with his wife and triplets. Dora Hall got her chance at Fred's Opening, now she's modeling at Lazarus in Columbus. You remember the Corwin boy- he's one of the happiest farmers around Lebanon. His specialty is the raising of Poland China hogs. While in Washington, Mary Lib saw Ruby Foster, who she learned is nursemaid to the children of the Ambasf sador from Iceland. Have you heard about Harold Edmons? They say he's a second Billy Sunday and attracts huge crowds to his evangelistic services. He's scheduled to appear at the Opera House. Have you seen that book of poems by Laura Mercer? Critics say that she is one of the few modern poets whose works will live. I heard a talk over the radio by Kenneth Snyder, who is famous as a big game hunter. He's been in Africa several years. Evelyn Sawyer is a famous Athletic Director on account of in- struction received in High School by her sojourns to the gym. Arthur Davis has become as popular as Paul Whiteman with his orchestra. He's even getting fat. Did you know that Harold Hutchinson is bookkeeper at one of Kresge's 5 Ei 10 stores? They say he's a whirlwind with the ladies. Phyllis Oram is married and of course is a very economical housewife as they live on game which her husband brings in. Olive Carnahan, the pre' ferred blonde, is still breaking men's hearts. I heard, too, that David Melampy is a. cow puncher on the Bar X Ranch in Nevada. Did you know that Irene Loer turned to politics? Yes, she was elected to the General Assembly from this district. John Brenner is a second Patrick Henry and delivered an oration on Why Gentlemen Pre' fer Blondes. I had a bit of news to tell Mary Lib and that is that our friend Margue' rite Hiza.r, in Hollywood, is makinga picture The Untamed Lady. It will be the making of her reputation. Herschel Hollingshead has made a fabulous amount of money from his new deodorant for onions. It all seems so strange. You certainly can't tell how a person will turn out from the way he acts in High School. After counting the casualities in passing through the Freshman and Sophomore years l find that our ranks have heen depleted in numher from ol to 331 hut we have in us in a greater degree, those aspirations to add as much honor to the Maroon and Wliite as we possihly can. During the past year we have estahlished an cnviahle record in student activities, especially athletics. We have contributed more people to this than any other class in the school. Six of our hoys, including the captain, have gone in for foothall and four have helped carry our team through a very successful season in haskethall. The girls have heen equally enthusiastic, six of them taking part in haskethall with one of them as captain. Along other lines we have heen equally successful. We have some talented people in our class which have often hcen called upon to furnish entertainmentfffive elocuf tionists, two violinists, and seven pianists. A goodly portion of the Pulwlic Speaking Class is composed of juniors. Iwiany took part in the School Uperetta, Miss Cherry' hlossoinf' As you have prohahly seen, we have tried to do our hest in all our work in order to help uphold the reputation of L. H. For the athletics of our school we have done our share, having furnished two mem' bers to football, five to basketball, and several to baseball. We are well represented in the Glee Club and also have the greatest number of students on the Honor Roll of any class in the High School. While we do not mean to boast, yet we feel that the Freshman Class has done its share to keep the spirit of Lebanon High School on the high plane that it has always been. Football Lebanon High School finished her third season of football with a fairly successful season. Though not so successful in the per cent of games won and lost, much was done to add to the glory of old L. H. S. We played a total of eight games during the season, winning one and losing seven. We defeated Bellevue, Ky., this being our only victory. But we are always high in school spirit, win or lose. Vw' e were confident of beating our traditional rival, Franklin as the time neared for the game. But Franklin surprised us and defeated the team S to 6. This was one of our biggest disappointments of the season. We scored a total of 31 points, during the season, to our opponents 184. We may say that we will have about an equally strong team next season, as only four regular members of the squad are lost by graduation, those being Harrold, Shavvhan, Ross, and Loer. The Light has been published regularly until '25 when it missed several issues for the lack of funds. How' ever, it was resumed and has been burning ever since, Robert Wills has oceupied the honorable position of editorfinfehief throughout the year. Mticli credit is due him for the efficient way in which he, with the aid of the staff, has published it. The school as a whole is greatly interested in the Light. It contains numerous jokes from classrooms and around school, a daily calendar, and alumni column, which enables us to keep in touch with former graduates, a news seetion, report of the weekly assemblies, and exchange column, poems, articles, and activities in athletics, which alto' gether make us eager to read each new issue. And now we are happy to pass the Light on to the Class of '28, We feel confident that the next stali under the capable editor, Dorothy Bowers, will still keep the Light shining as bright as ever. M arjorie James Faculty Advisor .. ..,,.,.. ,.., , Vv'illiam Hawk The Honor Club was reorganized in January of this year. It is composed of pupils maintaining an average of 90 or above for the preceding semester. This is the second year for the club and it has been more active this year than last. The club is maintained as an incentive for the pupils towards high scholarship. The membership has increased this year. Pins for the club have been designed and will be awarded to those having an average of 90 for five semesters. The members have already given a Bridge Tea to make money and will probably do more before the school year is over. We hope that next years club will be even more successful. Dramatic Club llnlwlic Speaking was introduced this year into the High School as a suhject for the first time. This elass had had charge of all dramatic work in the school and so resolved itself into thc Dramatic Cluh of the High School with Mrs. Berry as director. During the year it has produced several plays. Six Cups of Choeolatef' a clever play dealing with the different types of girls in America was presented lwefore the High School with a cast of six girls. The eluh had entire charge of the Christmas program, one feature ot' which was a play entitled The Christmas Spirit, which showed how two gronchy people regained the spirit of Christmas. The Cluh also presented How the Vote was Wcii1 hefore the High School and lwefore the ParentfTeachers Association, This play included most all the members of the cluh in the cast and was very well received. The memhers of the cluh also took part in the operetta and held the prominent parts. We hope that the cluh will he continued next year and will do more along this line. However, it is rapidly growing to be a club of great importance. Much of thc credit for the success of the club is due to Mrs. Callon, our Home Economics teacher. The Home Economics course was revised this year. The first year includes cooking for the first semester and sewing for the second. The girls prepare daily lunches this year which sell at minimum prices. The second year of Home Economics includes the study of sanitation and Hygiene, Home Nursing, House Planning, and Dietitics. The girls in this class have greatly en' joyed the work and believe that it has been beneficial. The Club held an Easter Sale of eggs and baskets. Un May the Twelfth, in the High School Auditorium, a display of the year's work will be held. This display will consist of sewing, Ideal Home Booklet, and canned fruits and jellies. Los Alumnos de Commercio President , Clinton Corwin VlltiC'PTL'.Sl'tlC?Il Kenneth Snyder Strtrettiry mid 'I'i'ettxiu'er . , Ruhy Foster Faculty Ad1ft'sor Marguerite Strohminger Los Alumnos de Commercio was reorganized in Octoher of this ycar with a mem' hership of fortyffive. The memhership of the clulw includes those in high school who are taking a junior or Senior commercial suhject. The olwjeets of this cluh are UD to elevate the status of its memhers and to advance their interests, Q21 to provide social gatherings for the promotion of fellowship and goodfwill among memhers. At all times the memhers have worked to make the Commercial department of the school the very hest that can he found. One of our memhers was one of twelve typists throughout the United States who won Corona Portahle typewriters for writing at the rate of sixty words a minute perfectly for a period of fifteen minutes. During the school year we have sold jello and have successfully given a henetit show Witli the money made from these two enterprises we have purchased an adding machine to he given to the commercial department of our school and therehy increase the etfif cieney of our department. We have had regular monthy meetings throughout the year and also several special meetings in the evening to promote the spirit of fellowship. Those who are leaving L. H. S. this year hope to he ahle to look liack in the years to come and see Los Alumnos de Commerciou doing as much as it has done in the last two years. The Operetta The musical comedy Miss Cherry Blossom was presented hy Lebanon High School March 16. It was conceded hy all to he the hest operetta ever produced hy the High School. A great deal of its success is due to the ahle directorship of Mrs. Berry who worked untiringly to make it a success. The music was directed hy Prof. Alfred Wzltkiins, and was accompanied hy Helen Hartshorn. The parts were well selected. Dora Hall in the part of Cherry Blossom showed a great conception of the role and interpreted the music heautifully. Nathan Fred in the part of the young American in love with Cherry was a fortunate choice for the part. His stage presence was exceptional and he carried the music well. Paul Dakin, his friend, carried his part with credit and his ever pleasing voice was at its hest. The part of Kokemo, the japanese Innkeeper was extremely well played hy Francis Drake It was a heavy part, carrying all the comedy work, but he carried it with a spontaneity and naturalness that could not have been equaled. Paul Harrold played well the part of Togo the politician. The part of Jessica, an American girl was creditahly portrayed hy Marjorie Bangham. The Geisha girls' chorus was one of the most striking in the play. All in the cast included 5 4 players. GEL H xx Xu? Harmon Hall The Harmon Hall Basket Ball team, which is composed entirely of memhers and alumni of Lelwanon High School, made a most enviahle record during the season of 192627, winning fourteen out of fifteen games played. Their sole defeat came at the hands of the L. B. Harrison Big Five of Cincinnati, and that hy only a single point which was made on a foul shot after the game had ended. This team, each memher heing a former star and pet of L. H. S., developed a wonderful offensive attack marked hy a sure eye for the hasket, and an almost airftight defense. Each man seemed adept at putting the hall through the hoop as is shown from the fact that in several games played hy the Hall team, four of the five men on the floor got more than five haskets each. Their string of victories was amassed at the expense of the hest amateurs in southf ern Ohio, most impressive victory prohahly being the defeat of the Norwood Baracas in the last game of the regular season. The Baracas are the recognized city champs of Cincinnati. They also trimmed the Jay Vv'hy Shamrocks, city champs of Dayton with apparently little effort and whipped the hest that Middletown could offer in the form of Mann's Whirlwiiids. The fourteen victories and the scores follow: Commercial Y. of Cincinnati, 50 to 25, Mann's Whirlwinds of Middletown, 29 to 27, O'Brien Inks of Dayton, 52 to 27, Jay Why Shamrocks, champs of the Dayton Amature League, 41 to 29, Lebanon Collegians, 50 to 27, Webby's Eagles of Middletown, 73 to 27, Y. Ram' blers of Cincinnati, 46 to 28, The Delco Lights of Dayton, 41 to 16, the Fairfield All-Stars, 75 to 36, Dayton Y., 47 to 29, the U. of C. Reserves, 46 to 22 and 44 to 33, the Wilbur Wright Collegians or the Miami Cements, 43 to 30, andthe Norwood Baracas, 43 to 37. The Hall team has averaged more than a point a minute, having scored a total of 723 points in fifteen games for an average of over 48 points to the game. Opposing teams have scored 434 points against them. . t.- lf:f'?,'-N -- sm, si am, . ,., Williams and Dakin, both of whom went to Lebanon High during the staged a spectacular race for scoring honors and the latter finally won out margin of one point. Nixon, Smith and Simpson counted 35, 28 and 4 points respectively. Harold- the other member of the team who was in high school during the year did not score a point until a postmeason game with the high school team was played.
