Quarterback Sophomore Lebanon 13-Shelbyville 7 September 17 at Lebanon The Blue Devils opened their season with the Shelbyville High School. Both teams made a good showing considering the fact that they had had only fourteen days of practice. Toward the end of the first quarter the Blue Devils began a march which ended in a touch- down for the Lebanon team. During the first minutes of the third quarter the Blue Devils, combining a passing and running attack, rushed S. H. S. for another touchdown and an extra point to lead, 13-0. In the fourth quarter Shelbyville made a touchdown and the extra point, ending the game with a score of 13-7. Lebanon 38--Donelson 0 September 24, at Lebandn The Blue Devils did justice to the occasion by defeating Donelson 38-0 in the second home game of the year. Donelson fumbled on their own ten- yard line, Hughey recovered, and Jennings went over for the first touch-down. Lebanon scored again when Hughey crashed over for another touch-down. Both teams fumbled frequently throughout the entire game. Donelson's passing attack fizzled and they were forced to resort to punts several times. Lebanon's preponderant team resumed its march in the third quarter by taking the ball on the Donelson 45, pushing it to the 25 and then over the goal line. In the fourth quarter Bob CShagD McCown, All- Mid State Back tore down the field behind ex- cellent interference to push the score 32-0, the reserves in the final minutes of play made six more. points. The powerful line made a great showing with the wonderful blocking and tackling of Lannom, Driver, Prowell and Doak. Lebanon 7-Portland 6 September 30 at Portland The Blue Devils' passing, running and blocking attack spelled defeat for Portland. Although the first half of the game seemed rather dull, the last half was very exciting. In the last moments of the third quarter the ball was carried to Within a few feet of the goal. With the change of goals there came a change in our fortune, as 183 lb. fullback Pee Wee Settlers went over for a touchdown and also made the extra point. This made the score 7-6 in our favor and it remained that way until the game ended. The outstanding feat of the game was the hard charging of the Lebanon Seven Mares line in the mud and water up and down the Tiger Field. Lebanon 25-Carthage 0 October 6, 1944 at Lebanon The Blue Devils duplicated last year's defeat of the Owls by rolling up a score of 25-0. The team started their drive early in the first quarter and crossed the Carthage goal line after two minutes of play. Captain Bob McCowan ran the Carthage ends and later the Tackles to prove himself a real mudder in L. H. Sf 25-0 win in rain and mud to keep the Blue Devils in the undefeated column. Max Smith made the last touchdown while Lebanon's hard charging line kept the mad Carth- age Owls on their side of the goal line, with the brillant playing of Ben Driver and Red Haralson. Murfreesboro threatened twice with sustained drives to the two yard before they lost the ball on downs and a fumble over the goal line on the second down for a touchdown, giving Lebanon the ball on the 20 yard line. Lebanon 7-Gallatin 7 October 27, at Gallatin In a toss-up game October 27, the Blue Devils came home with a 7-7 tie to go on their record of this season. Stopping the initial drive of the Blue Devils, which had carried them to three successive first downs, Webster snatched a fumbled ball out of mid air, after Bass Wright was tackled on the Gallatin 10 yard line, and ran it back to mid-field. From there the Waver rolled on a beautiful choice of passes and runs by Jenkins, Webster and Gour- ley, It was Webster who finally struck pay dirt, on fourth, from the Lebanon two yard line. Jenkins converted with a dropkick. In the fourth Hoyal Johnson's eleven cut loose with a fancy passing attack featuring quarter- back T. J. Bell. Settlers, finally got away a 30 yard heave to All-Conference end, and Bob Jennings caught it on the 50 and continued until he scored. He also added the extra point to the game. Ben Driver and Thomas Haralson were the outstanding linemen of the game. Lebanon 33-Mt. Juliet 0 November 3, at Lebanon A strictly offensive-minded Blue Devils team played host to the Mt. Juliet team before a crowd of upward 2,000. Scoring commenced early in the game when Buster Jennings, Devil tailback, scampered 45 yards for a touchdown during the first quarter. Other touchdown were made by Wright, Settlers, Bell and Bob Jennings. The great purge continued through the game, so naturally the substitutes saw a great deal of action. Lebanon 0-Litton 20 November 17, at Lebanon The Blue Devils fought back gamely but were unable to match the tactics of the visitors.
