Our sponsors were: Miss Moss, Miss Burton, Mr. Hall, and Miss Murphy, although during the year Miss Murphy and Miss Burton left us for other jobs and Mr. Hall entered the service. Mrs. Dunnaway and Miss Anderson were our two new sponsors. They were all very patient with us and soon we had become accustomed to our new sur- roundings. We elected the following as our officers: Martha Hankins, president, Lois Grime, vice-president, Helon Gill, secre- tary, Ann Goodall, treasurer, and Martha Clemmons was elected Most Beautiful Girl. WVith the knowledge and experience of the preceding year to aid us we entered Lebanon High as sophomores. We were still underclassmen but we felt greatly superior to the freshmen and it gave us a lot of pleasure to show them around. We chose as our officers: Walter Ray Carr, presidentg Bob McCown, vice- president, Madelyn Martin, secretaryg Louise Smith, treasurer. Still giving us their assistance were still fortunate in having Mrs. Dunnaway as our sponsor, although we lost Mrs. Perkins, and Miss Moss, who had become Mrs. Safley. This year two of our members, Della Mae Jenkins and Louise Smith, won monetary prizes in a state essay contest. Then we were juniors, which meant that we had finally become upper classmen. We had a very successful year with Kenneth Patton as president, Thomas Haralson, vice-presidentg Martha Clemmons, secretary, and Madelyn Martin, treasurer. The high- light of the year was the Junior-Senior reception, which was just as wonderful as we had anticipated. We were still fortunate in having Mrs. Dunnaway as our sponsor, although we lost Mrs. Perkins and Mrs. Safley, who was replaced hy Mrs. Beard. ln the spring of our junior year Della Mae Jenkins, Louise Smith, and Jeanne Blades won monetary prizes in a state cotton essay contest. At last we reached the fourth marker in our high school edu- cation-that of Seniors. Our number has now decreased to seventy- five, with thirteen of the original number in service and others in defense work or working on the farm. We have very capable officers in Bob McCown as president, Bass Wright, vice-president, Eloise Gaston, secretary, and Dorothy Ray, treasurer. Our senior year, with its elections, class meetings, Chirstmas program, selec- tion of rings, and invitations and all the other activities of seniors, is one we will never forget. These years have been very valuable to us for preparing our- selves for the future and we are deeply grateful to our teachers for their deep understanding and useful assistance. Quarterback Sophomore Lebanon 13-Shelbyville 7 September 17 at Lebanon The Blue Devils opened their season with the Shelbyville High School. Both teams made a good showing considering the fact that they had had only fourteen days of practice. Toward the end of the first quarter the Blue Devils began a march which ended in a touch- down for the Lebanon team. During the first minutes of the third quarter the Blue Devils, combining a passing and running attack, rushed S. H. S. for another touchdown and an extra point to lead, 13-0. In the fourth quarter Shelbyville made a touchdown and the extra point, ending the game with a score of 13-7. Lebanon 38--Donelson 0 September 24, at Lebandn The Blue Devils did justice to the occasion by defeating Donelson 38-0 in the second home game of the year. Donelson fumbled on their own ten- yard line, Hughey recovered, and Jennings went over for the first touch-down. Lebanon scored again when Hughey crashed over for another touch-down. Both teams fumbled frequently throughout the entire game. Donelson's passing attack fizzled and they were forced to resort to punts several times. Lebanon's preponderant team resumed its march in the third quarter by taking the ball on the Donelson 45, pushing it to the 25 and then over the goal line. In the fourth quarter Bob CShagD McCown, All- Mid State Back tore down the field behind ex- cellent interference to push the score 32-0, the reserves in the final minutes of play made six more. points. The powerful line made a great showing with the wonderful blocking and tackling of Lannom, Driver, Prowell and Doak. Lebanon 7-Portland 6 September 30 at Portland The Blue Devils' passing, running and blocking attack spelled defeat for Portland. Although the first half of the game seemed rather dull, the last half was very exciting. In the last moments of the third quarter the ball was carried to Within a few feet of the goal. With the change of goals there came a change in our fortune, as 183 lb. fullback Pee Wee Settlers went over for a touchdown and also made the extra point. This made the score 7-6 in our favor and it remained that way until the game ended. The outstanding feat of the game was the hard charging of the Lebanon Seven Mares line in the mud and water up and down the Tiger Field. Lebanon 25-Carthage 0 October 6, 1944 at Lebanon The Blue Devils duplicated last year's defeat of the Owls by rolling up a score of 25-0. The team started their drive early in the first quarter and crossed the Carthage goal line after two minutes of play. Captain Bob McCowan ran the Carthage ends and later the Tackles to prove himself a real mudder in L. H. Sf 25-0 win in rain and mud to keep the Blue Devils in the undefeated column. Max Smith made the last touchdown while Lebanon's hard charging line kept the mad Carth- age Owls on their side of the goal line, with the brillant playing of Ben Driver and Red Haralson. Lebanon 24-Hartsville 7 October 13, at Hartsville The Blue Devils playing host to the Hartsville griders, emerged on the long end of the 24-7 score. Captain Shag McCown was injured in the first quarter with a broken shoulder, while Pee Wee Settlers, All-Mid State fullback, went over for the -0. Two touchdowns were scored in the third quarter by All-Conference Buster Jennings and Co-Captain Settlers making the score 19-0, with the help of the strong Blue Devil line. Lebanon 7-Murfreesboro 0 October 20, At Murfreesboro Racking up their sixth straight win of the sea- son, Lebanon defeated the Central High Tigers 7-0 before some 1800 fans on Jones Field. The Blue Devils punched across a touchdown midway of the second quarter and then settled down to Qxgouchdown in the first quarter, making the score Bell, 155 pound quarter back took a pass from Pee Wee Settlers for the six points. Murfreesboro threatened twice with sustained drives to the two yard before they lost the ball on downs and a fumble over the goal line on the second down for a touchdown, giving Lebanon the ball on the 20 yard line. Lebanon 7-Gallatin 7 October 27, at Gallatin In a toss-up game October 27, the Blue Devils came home with a 7-7 tie to go on their record of this season. Stopping the initial drive of the Blue Devils, which had carried them to three successive first downs, Webster snatched a fumbled ball out of mid air, after Bass Wright was tackled on the Gallatin 10 yard line, and ran it back to mid-field. From there the Waver rolled on a beautiful choice of passes and runs by Jenkins, Webster and Gour- ley, It was Webster who finally struck pay dirt, on fourth, from the Lebanon two yard line. Jenkins converted with a dropkick. In the fourth Hoyal Johnson's eleven cut loose with a fancy passing attack featuring quarter- back T. J. Bell. Settlers, finally got away a 30 yard heave to All-Conference end, and Bob Jennings caught it on the 50 and continued until he scored. He also added the extra point to the game. Ben Driver and Thomas Haralson were the outstanding linemen of the game. Lebanon 33-Mt. Juliet 0 November 3, at Lebanon A strictly offensive-minded Blue Devils team played host to the Mt. Juliet team before a crowd of upward 2,000. Scoring commenced early in the game when Buster Jennings, Devil tailback, scampered 45 yards for a touchdown during the first quarter. Other touchdown were made by Wright, Settlers, Bell and Bob Jennings. The great purge continued through the game, so naturally the substitutes saw a great deal of action. Lebanon 0-Litton 20 November 17, at Lebanon The Blue Devils fought back gamely but were unable to match the tactics of the visitors. Billy Thompson, writing in the Nashville Banner, said, Hlt was a sad day for the Lebanon Blue Devils, but they took it like men. After the game, the Lebanon players entered the Lions' dressing room, ni ,' expressed appreciation for their fine sportsman- M 5 ship even though their hopes of an undefeated .' season had been blastedf' The Blue Devil line 'A,, , played one of their best games of the season with 3 the help of John Brooks, Driver, Hughey and T, , al others. x vi LEE SHANNON BUDDY JENNINGS BILLY RAY HARRY TURNER 165 Lb. The Blue Devils in winning this game also Won the C. V. C. Championship making a total of three Championships out of four in the past four years dating from 1941-44, also putting four linemen up for All-Conference bid. Lebanon 37-Watertown 0 November 27, at Lebanon The Blue Devils ended their most successful season in the history of Lebanon by defeating Watertown 37-0 Watertown received the opening kickoff but failed to gain much ground. After the ball was kicked out of bounds on the Lebanon forty. Buster Jennings skirted left end and ran 60 yards for a touchdown. Nine plays later, Lebanon had scored with Jennings once more going across. Lebanon's third touchdown came when, after a 45 yard drive sparked by Bell and Hughey, Bell went over from the 13 yard line. A Panther fumble a few minutes later resulted in another Lebanon score, made by Settlers who crashed through the center. Taking the second half kickoff on their 23, Lebanon did not relinouish the ball until they had scored their fourth touchdown. Settlers' long pass to Bell put the Blue i Devils on the one, and Settlers plunged through the line. Scoring for the day ended ' in the fourth quarter when Settlers passed to Bob Jennings who galloped 40 yards. Six seniors played their last game. Two years later Miss Gladys Deakins was added as co-sponsor. To be a member of this club a student must be approved by the faculty and members of the club and must make and maintain an average of 85 in his subjects. Lebanon has furnished two state officers for Tennessee Beta Club: Nellie McDowell, secretary and Ann Shannon, vice-presi- dent. Since War conditions have prevent- ed the holding of state conventions the three clubs of Wilson County have held a county banquet each year. The first three banquets w e r e held in Lebanon and sponsored by the local club. This year the ton, Mary Elizabeth Johnson, Hugh Gwynn, Eloise Gaston. The club has presented the school a piano, a projector and a copy of Holman's Head of Christ . A donation of 3537.50 was made to the National Beta Fund to aid students in securing a college education. The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America organization is the development of agri- culture leadership, cooperation, citizen- ship, and patriotism. It is designed to suplement training opportunities for boys who are progressive toward the goal of establishment in a farming business. Tennessee was the twenty-seventh char- tered state. The Greengale Chapter of Lebanon High School is sponsored by Mr. Hugh Evans, vocational agriculture teacher. The four grades of membership are: Green Hand, Future Farmer, State Farmer, and American Farmer. The officers for the year are: President, Hugh Gwynn, vice president, Ben Mid- gett, secretary, David Robinson, treasurer, W. D. SOUP TO NUTS Standing: Della Mai Jenkins, Buddy Lasater, Houston Reed, Floyd Reed, John Porter, Jack Ricketts, Thomas Haralson, and Mary Ellen Holman. Doctor Manny Pilski fThomas Haral- sonj, a progressive Hebrew health specia- list, has conceived the happy idea of open- ing a dietetic sanitorium on the California desert where meals are served in the form of concentrated pellets. Starting on a small scale with Miss Rice CRuth Lee Pricej, the chief attendant, and Hotfoot fHouston Reedj, a colored porter, he ex- pects the business to grow with leaps and bounds, and it does. Comes the arrival of Mrs. Potter Beams fPhyllis Purnellj, a society matron, who brings her daughter, Veronica fVoncile Edwardsj for a course of treatments, but whose real purpose is to escape from Damon Goodfellow fHugh Gwynnj, an old grouch. lt seems that Dr. Pilski has wheeled the formulas for the concentrated pellets from an eccentric old woman who lived in the Killscat Mountains. There are two mysterious patients in the sanitorium, namely Lincoln Lewis fWare Rickettsl and Tru dy Trudello fEloise Gastonj. Trudy is a superficial movie queen who in- sists on dramatizing Lincoln's supposed affection for her. laboratory, an d Pilski sends for Bob Bennington CBuddy Lasaterj, a detective. Bob arrives and runs slap bang into his sweetheart, Veronica, with whom he has quarreled. Veronica decides to teach Bob a lesson, so she plays up to the handsome David Strong QFloyd Reedl, an Olympic contender. David is p l e a s e d with Veronica's attention, but he is knocked for a twister when Claire Dalton fMary Ellen Holmanj his fiancee, and her aunt, Selena Catchwell, CDella Mai Jenkinsj came to take the treatments. A Russian friend of Doctor Pilski's sends some emotion pellets labelled '4Anger , Love , and 'tTruth,'. By accident the anger pellets are served for luncheon, and when they take effect the sanitorium is turned into a madhouse. Miss Rice con- ceives the idea of serving love pellets to counteract the effect of the anger pellets. Doctor Pilski then serves the truth pellets so that he can find out who stole his formulas. The truth that they reveal is more than startling. Lincoln Lewis was the rightful heir to the formulas and had engaged his sweetie to steal them. 1 1 1 ' f' I UIUH HIGH MINNIE LEE NEAL Junior Editor ,,,, 4 EIEHTH GH UE lst Row Left to Right: Betty Roberts, Clara Nell Fisher, Betty Ann Scheuerman, Katherine Everett, Gladys Fields, Mary Jane Bell, Ann McDearman, Ann King, Betty Sullivan, Ann Thompson, Betty Joe Carr, Cliffodean Boyd. 2nd Row Left to Right: Betty Jean Alsup, Alma Jones, Mary Davis, Margaret Alsup, Roxie Nell Goolsby, Mildred Ferrel, Wanda Dyer, Jean Lawrence. 3rd Row Left to Right: Tommy Beasley, Dolores Speck, Sylvia Cunningham, Margaret Swann, Billie Hellen Jones, Dorothy Drennon, Jane Thompson, Jo Ann Jewell, Sarah Williams, Glenn Donnell. 4th Row Left to Right: Mary E.
