Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1975 volume:

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. — Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Debora Moore STAFF Sharon Jessee Teresa Edge Paul Jenks Jim Garrett 1975 PIONEER SPONSORS Nell Howard Doris Bundy B USINESS MAN A GERS Tammy Mitchell Patty Vencill VOLUME XXXI LEBANON HIGH SCHOOL In between the pages of the 1975 Pioneer” are mem- ories of Lebanon High School from the Fall of 1974 to the Spring of 1975. Each season represents the change in our lives that this school year has brought about. As each sea- son passed, we found fulfillment and meaning. We need not look back on these memories with regret, but rather as is our motto, GO . . . WINTER FALL As we returned to Lebanon High School in the fall of the year, we looked forward to what this new year offered. Although settling down after our summer vacation took some of us a while, we finally buckled down and became in- volved. Participation in the various activities — football, band, clubs, girls basket- ball — help this season to slip into the memories which are caught between these pages. wr m . m 5 The return to school found many practicing for the opening of the foot- ball season. A lot of hard work went in- to these prac- tice sessions. 7 LHS FOOTBALL The 1974 Lebanon High football team had a winning season. The preparation during football camp and the weeks pre- ceding the first game showed as our team had a 7-3 record. Starting off on a winning note, with a victory over Garden, was soon forgotten when the next two games were lost, but the team fought back, and went on toward victory until we were defeated by Castlewood. This loss cost us the District title, but the team finished the season with seven victories. Individual effort and sportsmanship characteristics were evident to the fans, and those possessing these traits were rewarded. We were pleased to have members of the LHS team make the All-District football team, and we are proud of the ones who received the Jay- cee Sportsmanship and “One Hundred and Ten Percent” Awards. Hard prac- tice went into each band session. Great enthusiasm was a part of the LHS band, and they were behind the football team 100 %. The Lebanon Pioneer Marching Band received top awards in several area com- petitions at Chilhowie, Bristol, and Abingdon, each time being placed in Division I. The band’s hard work and practice paid off. This page is a tribute to all those who worked to bring the “I’s” home. 17 THE RING DANCE Excitement soared as seniors received their long awaited class rings. Seniors became carried away with themselves and many underclassmen felt the weight of the newly acquired rings. Doughnuts were sold and the needed money raised for the “Ring” Dance. Many seniors worked hard and long to be able to finance their affair. When the dance finally arrived and “MASON”, the band, began their music a long awaited event was taking place. Everyone, chaperones included, had a good time. As many now know, the “Ring” Dance marked the “beginning of the end” for the Class of 1975. S ' A t. ' .. The several weeks before Homecoming was a very hectic time for the SCA, which planned and coordinated this year’s ac- tivities. Getting the parade organized, the selecting of the Homecoming court, and planning a dance was no easy matter. All this planning came to a climax dur- ing Homecoming week. Each class began working on its float; the football team worked hard all week; the art class deco- rated the gym for the dance; and the cheerleaders planned the Pep rally. On Thursday night, the annual bonfire was held, and the excitement of the coming football game was felt. 21 SENIOR A TTENDANT Elizabeth Settle SENIOR A TTENDANTS Jim Garrett, Beverly Puckett JUNIOR A TTENDANTS Tony Mullins, Kim Browning SOPHOMORE A TTENDANTS Sammy Howard, Becky Poston FRESHMEN A TTENDANTS Randy Addison, Ava Yates SENIOR A TTENDANTS Gary Jonas, Connie Griffith SENIOR A TTENDANTS Paul Campbell, Sherry Jackson The Homecoming Royalty of 1975 was chosen differently this year. The floats were judg- ed, and first, second, and third place awards were given to the best three floats. By the time the game began, excite- ment was at a peak. Even though it rained, the football team played superbly; the band performed well at half-time; the King and Queen were crowned; and — best of all — the game was won! After our victory many attended the dance to celebrate. Everyone seemed to enjoy this affair. All in all — Home- coming 1974 was ex- cellent! 1974 DISTRICT CHAMPS! While the football games were being played, the girls’ basketball team was working its way to the top again this year. They ended their season with a superb record of 10 wins, 2 losses. In district play-offs, St. Paul, Castlewood, Honaker, and Haysi bowed to our determined team. Participating in the Regional Tournaments at Norton was the highlight of this great season. Although the team was beaten by Pound, they represented LHS in the true spirit of a “Pioneer”. This Year’s team is to be con- gratulated. WAY TO GO, GIRLS! Although classes were continuously in session and activities numerous, we still found time to relax, time for each other, and time to take advantage of the fun that going to school can produce. PIONEER To raise money for the publishing of the 1975 “Pioneer”, the an- nual staff sponsored a fund raising activity in which all the clubs par- ticipated. Each club nominated a boy or girl to run for the title of Mr. or Miss Pioneer. After several weeks of collecting money for votes, each candidate turned in his votes. The votes were counted, and Ricky Bishop was named Mr. Pioneer. Missy Perkins was the first runner-up, and Debbie Vencill was second run- ner-up. Each club nominated a girl to run for this title. On Valentine ’s Day, Miss Sweetheart was announced. Judy Jordan was crowned Miss Sweet- heart. Becky Taylor was first runner-up, and Laura Sword was sec- ond runner-up. The Junior class wishes to thank all people who collected money for this, as well as all their other projects. Second Runner-up — Laura Sword 33 The National Honor Society sponsored a “fifties” day in which all of the students dressed as in the 50 ' s. Everyone enjoyed this event. In the afternoon, the National Honor Society had an induction ceremony in which the new members of the club were recognized. After the assembly, the National Honor So- ciety members served refreshments to the inductees and their parents. i “THE LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE” This year ' s Speech Class presented the play “The Little Red Schoolhouse” to the student body. Everyone enjoyed this play and the Speech Class is to be con- gratulated for a top-notch performance. Although there were several people who partici- pated, the hope is that next year will bring more interest among students. The Forensic play, “The Wild Flowering of Chastity” was a big success when it was pre- sented to the school. In district competition, the play received a “Superior” rating, and in Region- al, a “Good” rating. I VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1974-1975 LHS Basketball team had a winning season with a 13-7 record. Their district record was 10-4. The season began on a winning note with two non-district wins over Chilhowie and Saltville. Although the next game was lost to Castlewood, the team rallied to take five straight wins. The victories were harder to obtain in the next few games (4 out of the next 6 were lost); however the team finished the season with a winning note. In district play, the team beat Hurley, but lost a hard fought game to Garden in the semi-finals. The seven seniors on the team led in more ways than one. They contributed team spirit, leadership, and drive. Through the combined efforts of the seniors and the other members of the team LHS had a good year in basketball. The 1974-1975 Basketball Cheerleaders exhibited spirit, enthusiasm, concern and cheerfulness. Our cheerleaders seemed to find no bounds to their eagerness to strive for the all important goal — School Spirit. Pep rallies were planned; parties given for the ball players; signs made; and, of course, cheering at the ballgames. The cheerleaders supported the team ' ' one hundred percent” and did their best to show it. I To break the monotony of classes, the school spon- sored class intramurals. The sun brought out smiles, as well as sun bathing during activity. “Spring fever” seemed to affect not only students but teachers as well. pmmm¥ SPRING As spring came to Lebanon, students seemed to come alive once more. It seemed that some- thing was going on every minute. The hand went to Florida; track and baseball began; the Senior play was given; and Seniors found themselves pushed into Graduation. Spring moved swiftly for most students. Before we knew it exams were over and school was end- ing. As Spring left so did the students of LHS; many looking forward to next year at LHS and many leaving the halls of LHS forever. 54 ■III nii ■m MU Ull un s LHS BAND TRIP AND SP RING CONCERT The LHS Pioneer Band was able to travel to Sarasota, Florida to participate in the “King Nep- tune Festivals”. At this concert, the jun- iors received their letters, the sen- iors were recognized and several awards were given. Celeste Abo- lin received “The Director’s Award” and Debora Moore re- ceived the “John Phillip Sousa” award. Several boys were selected to go to Regionals. Those who attended did an outstanding job. Curtis Richards and Dave Owens were selected by their performance to go and par- ticipate in the State Track meet. Both boys represented L. H. Dazzling smiles, pretty legs, and painted eyes made the judges’ decision a hard one. The “gals” were dressed in stylish fashions, and their “men” were equally dressed. Ballet dancing, acrobatics, pom-pom routines, trumpet solos, and poetry recitals were a few of the talents dis- played by our “beauties”. Everyone enjoyed these com- ical stunts. These long hours of work “paid off” — as all agreed. The gym was transformed into another world. The theme of the prom was “We May Never Pass This Way Again.” “Revelation” was the band which everyone seemed to enjoy. The Juniors put together a beautiful prom. In fact, the school library has been labeled as the country’s unique contribution to the science of education. It is an im- portant auxiliary in the search for answers to questions which grow out of school work. Remem- ber the book is the chief tool of the intellectual, for the aca- demically talented benefit most from wide and intensive reading. All library material is ordered, cataloged, and shelved for im- mediate circulation to the entire school population. Varied activities find the li- brary a suitable setting. Research workers study the card catalog and the Readers Guide which serve as guides to the storehouse of information found in the shelves. Important meetings are conducted in the library. Often students and instructors find a spare moment for reading. Miss Howard and Mrs. Baker, the library clerk, strive to pro- vide worthwhile and varied book and non-book materials to ac- commodate the students and the teachers of the school. 109 T ' ilTfTiinrTi-ffi % I OUR HELPERS Cooks: Ann Hobson, Betty Wagoner, Sue Hughes, Geraldine Rasnake, Elma Holmes.
