The 1973 football season began on a low note for the Pioneers with a 21-point loss to Clintwood. Many dismal predictions were made after a loss to Saltville, which dropped the team ’s record to 1-2. The next week, a win brought their record to 2-2. It kept rising, and at the end of the season the Pioneers were 8-2 and riding a 7 game winning streak. Among those seven games was a 7-6 home- coming victory over Castle- wood, which led to the dis- trict crown. Then, in the regionals, LHS met Clintwood. Clint- wood, the number one rank- ed team in the state, once again defeated the Pioneers in a hard fought game. LHS FOOTBALL ( 8 - 3 - 0 )
