“It is good to perns® and rest awhile From life ’s demanding pace To leave the loud Chaotic crowd And find a peaceful place To put on the cloak of quietness With heart and mind at ease. To sit with a friend At the long day ' s end And recall fond memories. And whether we talk or whether we dream You ' ll find that in the end, No treasure , though rare Could ever compare With the quiet hours spent with a friend, ” —Burrow EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Debbie Campbell STAFF Charlotte Gilmer Randy Campbell SPONSORS Nell Howard Doris Bundy BUSINESS MANAGERS Jackie Witt Teresa Musick VOLUME XXX LEBANON HIGH SCHOOL ' fi ,, fvnr 8S , ■ffHyffB 2 wt- ' 3£u 9 v; 7 . ■ cr r D¥fn £ 7 ' ■ C ' We return to school in the fall with mixed emotions. A concentrated effort on the part of everyone involved made it a band which not only the school, but also the community, could be proud of. This page is a tribute to the talent and dedication of all those individuals. 9 The new year was a mixture of faces, classmates, and routines — some new, many familiar. The entrance of the freshmen provided the school with a supply of new faces, and with the arrival of the Senior rings many familiar scenes were re-enacted. And then, when the novelty wore off, we settled down to work. fw i mT I. | SENIOR TRI-HI-Y 1ST ROW: C. Abolin, Pres.; S. Jessee, VP; E. Settle; Sec.; S. Garrett, Treas.; C. McGlothlin, Chap; P. Many dismal predictions were made after a loss to Saltville, which dropped the team ’s record to 1-2. The next week, a win brought their record to 2-2. It kept rising, and at the end of the season the Pioneers were 8-2 and riding a 7 game winning streak. Among those seven games was a 7-6 home- coming victory over Castle- wood, which led to the dis- trict crown. Then, in the regionals, LHS met Clintwood. Clint- wood, the number one rank- ed team in the state, once again defeated the Pioneers in a hard fought game. LHS FOOTBALL ( 8 - 3 - 0 ) 1ST ROW: D. Castle, Capt.; R. Fields; R. Owen; G. Clark; M. RAH! HEY! HEY! LEBANON PIONEERS ALL THE WAY! Our football cheerleaders helped to create and maintain a spirited atmosphere during the 1973 football season. While the football players were pre- paring for the forthcoming season, the cheerleaders were attending accredited camps and practice sessions. And, as in years past, the cheerleaders remained an intregal part of a successful football season. SUMMER CHEERLEADING CAMP: 1ST ROW: D. Moore; E. Settle; E. Settle; C. Morri- son 2ND ROW: C. The three Seniors selected wait- ed anxiously for the Friday night game and the crowning of the queen. Charlotte Cox was chosen the 1973 Homecoming Queen by the football team and crowned during the half- time ceremony by the 1972 queen, Debbie Warner. Homecoming festivities in- cluded the annual parade, the judging of the floats, and the football game. Lebanon de- feated Castlewood before a capacity crowd — a fitting end- ing for such a week. « Homecoming Night was an event long prepared for and long awaited. Work was begun on the floats days in advance, the team readied themselves for the confrontation with Castlewood all week, and the band practiced for the halftime program. The energies of a large portion of the students were directed toward that night. The energy was not wasted! The Sophomores won the float com- petition, the Seniors won the spirit stick, and the team won the game. STUDENT COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION: 1ST ROW: J. Jordan; C. Gilmer; M. Mabry; J. Hagy; G. Through the efforts of Miss Whitt the girl’s bas- ketball team was reinstated. The girls played against teams from the County and against a strong team from Abingdon. The team ended the year undefeated with a 10-0 record. The high school should be proud of the dedicated efforts of Miss Whitt and her girls. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL TEAM: KNEELING: B. But school being what it is, the academic activities occu- pied the majority of the student’s time. Research and study were evident everywhere. MISS PIONEER BECKYBOYD For the second year the Annual Staff sponsored the Miss Pioneer contest to raise money for the publi- cation of the 1973-74 Pioneer. Thanks to the generosity of the con- tributors and the effort put forth by the candidates, over $300 was raised. The money was very help- ful in preparing the Pioneer for you. Despite of the hard fight put up by the players, the team was unable to rack up many wins. Spectator pride and enthu- siasm remained steadfast nevertheless, and cheered them on to their few, but glorious wins. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: W. Salyers, man.; Coach Lipscomb; G. [ ' ■ ■ ; ; : The J. V. Basketball team had a good sea- son this year. Their record . — 15 wins and 5 loses — wholeheart- edly confirms this statement. The squad played hard and ex- hibited that certain determination and fortitude reflective of the true Pioneer spirit. A tough team with an initiative to win. The Basketball Cheerleaders of Lebanon High laid the foundation for a season of vigor and pep. Their energy knew no bounds, and the results of their hard work were visible all over the school. Signs were painted and displayed, pep rallies carefully planned and given before the student body, a spirit stick awarded to the group with the most pep. Special dinners and parties were prepared in honor of the players. But even more important was their constant backing of the team which never faltered. They did an excellent job. The students found themselves working together in the class- room and participating in extracurricular activities — a very busy schedule. But of course, there was always some spare time just to relax and take it easy. The speech class of Lebanon High School put on two productions during the year. The first production, shown on these two pages, was The Outcasts of Poker Flats by Bret Harte. The play was directed by Myrtle Taylor. After what seemed like dozens of delays, the play was finally given for the school. The speech class later produced Great Smokies, a comedy by Le Roma Greth. John Oakhurst Uncle Billy . . Yes — mean NO!! . . . Drat it . . . harsh words . . . Got any old shoes handy ? . . . Keep em of-f-f-f me! . . . Don’t I know! ... It’s a strange world surely . . . Washed all the spots OFF!? ! . .. It’s time for “Bewitched” ... It’s such fun doing what one ought not to do . . . Oh! What a night!! 99 BACCALAUREATE m KY mJ I ' GRADUATION It is nice that we could walk together for awhile — That our paths were side by side, There was so much to say and do If you think of looking back Look back to us and smile and remember. The rooms are large with space for all my friends. There is not strain nor stress. Foundation stones are love and loyalty, And over all a roof of cheerfulness. Mirrored upon the walls where we may see, Are mem- ories, some etched in brilliant hue while some are dark; and down the corridors Come echoes of glad voices old and new; Times when my spirit droops or when it soars, I find response here where my travels end.
