Seniors chatted and adjusted caps and gowns. Rev. Milton P. Reid began the service with a prayer that the graduating class find God’s will for their lives. The audience rose as the Senior Class marched to their place at the front of the auditorium. A special high school chorus, led by Mr. Roger Glovier, gave a beautiful rendition of “Now Is The Hour”. In the scripture and prayer offered by Rev. Beecher Duns- more, Seniors were urged to have faith when facing life’s obstacles. with a solemn service and words of inspiration. Baccalaureate, the farewell sermon, was delivered to the Class of 1970, their parents and friends, on Sunday night, May 31 , in the high school auditorium. Graduating with the class’s highest scholastic honors were: Glen Durrett, Linda Cassell, Eugene Mercer, Deborah Ramey, Jean Jackson, David Reid, Francine Easterly, Salutatorian, Vickie Penick, Johnny Vencill, and Gwen Kiser, Valedictorian. Guest speaker was the Reverend Dr. William Tuck, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia. Seniors listened with sincere interest. Dr. Tuck emphasized the importance of making the right decisions and having the courage to stand by them. Graduation ... It was over so quickly. It was a solemn occasion as the Gass of 70 marched into the auditorium for their final program at L.H.S. Our pianist, Scotty Fletcher, contributed to the Commencement with his musical accompaniment. Clyde Lester opened the Graduation ceremony with a prayer, thanking God for his many blessings during the past twelve years. As Joan Cox sang, “The Impossible Dream,” the thoughts of the Seniors turned to their own “unreachable stars.” 120 I am leaving Commencement was held on Friday, June 5, in the school auditorium. For parents and friends, it was a time of pride and perhaps a little sadness. For the graduating Seniors, it was a moment of reality, crowding the memories of twelve years into such a short time, and realizing that it was really the end. Valedictorian, Gwen Kiser, in her speech, “Face of America”, The theme, “America Tomorrow”, was strongly explored in Linda presented her idea that sacrifice is needed to regain the American Cassell’s address, “Values to Cherish.” image. Patricia McFadden emphasized the need for “Enlightened Leadership.” Salutatorian, Francine Easterly, offered her thoughts on facing life’s joys and sorrows with equal grace in her speech, “Agony and Ecstasy of Life.” 121 But not forgetting to take with me a part of those days Diplomas were eagerly received, signifying the con- clusion of our public education but only the beginning of our adult life. “Believe in the Future” was the topic of Gwen Dale’s address which advised all to put hope and faith into the future. Mr. Omer Elkins, Director of Instruction for Rus- sell County, awarded diplomas to the 1970 graduates. In his speech, “Peace with Freedom,” Bill Alexander expressed his belief that free people should never accept peace at the price of their liberty. With a certain amount of joy, sorrow, and a great deal of pride. Seniors accepted their diplomas. It was over. Come on you old lads, come on you new lads, It’s Lebanon High School now we cheer! Rah! Rah! Now is the time boys, to make a big noise, No matter what the people say. For there is none to fear, the gang’s all here. So, hail to Lebanon High School Hail! Rah! Rah! 126 Remember to remember . . . It’s hard to believe that the 1969—70 school year has come to a close, the last pictures have been identified, and the last pages stamped. In the words of Bob Dylan, “The line it is drawn, the curse it is cast; the slow one now will later be fast, as the present now will later be past.” The lingering moments of our store have now become the past. They were days of change. We sought and we found. We became a part and we grew. Every day was an episode in an all-too-soon ending story, a story in which all of us were the main characters. Through others we found ourselves. We discovered ambitions, made dreams, and overcame obstacles. It is my hope that the 1970 PIONEER will present an accurate account of YOUR YEAR, and that you will review these memories with as much pleasure as I have found in recording them. I wish to express my sincere thanks to the staff members who contributed their time and effort to collect these happenings and who made my task so enjoyable. I extend a special thanks to others who have made the 1970 PIONEER possible: Our sponsors, Miss Nell Howard and Mrs. Doris Bundy; Mr. Frank W. Horton, our principal; Mr. Phillippi, the Delmar photographer; The businesses who supported us with advertisements, And you, the students, for without you there would have been no story. Finally, to the Class of 1970. “I do not wish you joy without a sorrow. Nor endless day without the healing dark, Nor brilliant sun without the restful shadow, Nor tides that never turn against your bark. I wish you love, and strength, and faith, and wisdom. Goods, gold enough to help some needy one, I wish you songs, but also blessed silence, And God’s sweet peace when every day is done.” — D.N.M.
