TO OUR HEARTS THE PIONEER LEBANON HIGH SCHOOL Lebanon, Virginia Charlotte Burns Kittye Renick Editor Business Manager Mrs. Paul Helvey Sponsor 2 . . . H(Jo Our school life is truly dear to our hearts! So well we remember that sunny September Day when we started another year, the last one for some of us. We were anxious to renew old friendships and to get started in our school work again. We were very excited this month because we won our first football game in three years, then we won another and another. October flew by and so did November and soon our basketball teams were out on the court again for another season. Both teams were victorious. It seems like all we r e m e b e r about the winter months was snow, snow, and more snow. We were snowed out of school for a whole week; it has been said that it was the coldest winter in thirty years. About the end of March everything started happening at once --we won the two trophies in the county forensic contest, the senior play was cast and practice began, car loads of delegates went to different conventions all over the State, May Day plans were in the making, and we were all anticipating our Junior -Senior Banquet and Prom. Everything happened so fast that gr a du at ion exercises were soon here. As the seniors bade farewell to the school on June 3rd they were sure that the Juniors would take their place and continue making L. H. S. dear to everyone’s heart. if td sift : hi cm ant ui Imticltj.wi is crated i. dm tdcnTi-fitd. ft thjh fct U „ r , „ «- mk |H(altl rerz ' ih dt£ inr c KtfS . IJH Pi an din UC- ' Hi jtrJUii « I JEf. The theme of the program was The Wizard of Oz. The Wizard of Ox was Jackie Lasley; Dorothy, Anne Burns; Tin Man, Johnny Watkins; Scarecrow, Jimmy Gibson; Witch, Linda Jessee; Lioii, Richard Cozzolino and Beaver Stoots; and the Princess, Cheryl Thomas. Dorothy lived on a farm in Kansas. One day a great wind lifted her house up and moved it to a strange land. As the house came to earth, it fell on a wicked witch and killed her. Dorothy was welcomed by a good witch who thanked her for killing one of the wicked witches. Dorothy asked the good witch to tell her how she could get back to her farm in Kansas. The good witch told her to go to the Emerald City and see the Wizard of Oz. As Dorothy went on her journey to the Emerald City she met a Tin Man, a Scarecrow, and a Lion who went with her. They each had a favor to ask of the Wizard. As Dorothy and her friends walked to the city they were greeted by the people of Oz, (portrayed by the grade school and the tumbling team of Lebanon and accompanied by the choir) who did dances for them. The Wizard granted each of their wishes and they all were entertained by the May Pole Dance. 82 ROAD TO THE EMERALD CITY DOROTHY MEETS THE WIZARD AT EMERALD CITY MUNCHINS -- TUMBLING TEAM MAY POLE DANCE MAY COURT The May Court is as follows: King, Larry Brown; Queen, Jeane Sykes; Maid of Honor, Aline Breeding; tenth grade Prince and Prin- cess, Tommy Campbell and Joyce Cook; ninth grade Prince and Princess, Myrl Allen and Barbara Vencille eighth grade Prince and Princess, Harry L e c i k and Patty Skeens; seventh grade Prince and Princess, Sherman Litton and Ann McReynolds; sixth grade Prince and Princess, Bob Gilmer and Eva Blevins; fifth grade Prince and Princess, Staffie Mit- chell and Margaret Howard; fourth grade Prince and Princess Jimmie Cook and Carolyn Davis; third grade Prince and Princess, David Smith and Gymn Gilmer ; second grade Prince and Princess, Connie Damron and Susan Meade; first grade Prince and Princess, Jim Kiser and Pricilla Jessee.
