Her stay at Lebanon gave us an insight into true tone and F har mony that only the most perfect music could embody. In Miss Fuller we could feel a depth of spirit equaled by few and a close communion with God. Miss Fuller ' s untimely departure brought forth the sad note in the song, but many lives have been enriched by her having lived in our midst. The friendship and fellowship she shared with us will al- ways hold a sacred place — — - in memory. 6 7 . 7 Pol uci , You 1 may forget the hard work . . . the teachers ... at least a few of them ... 9 some names and faces . . . but there are some events and experiences that we, the 1955 5 Pioneer Staff, feel should glow like undying embers in your memory . . . the teachers who have 5 you for the past four years, the students discussing everyone in school in secret corners, your yearly parties, the senior prom, meetings . . . meetings . . . . . . and more meetings. We wish to make these memories live with you throughout the coming years, brightening your life as only memories of youth can do. We have tried to register the knowledge that you have gotten here, the place that will live forever within you, your own alma-mater: Lebanon High School. The seniors preparing to assume leadership in the future awaiting them, the juniors almost to the place where they put on their robes of seniority, the sopho- mores with much accomplished and so much yet to do, and the freshmen, eager and hopeful, optimistic of what lies ahead. Every year each class moves forward; the jun- iors to the ruling class, the sophomores to the class in which they see that long awaited year isn ' t far off. The freshmen, gay and excited, move on to the sophomore year where they are undecided as to their importance. Finally the seniors, saying farewell to these underclassmen, with never a backward glance as they enter the gates of Memory Lane. 22 ct SetUon ? We felt frightened and uncertain, yet we were growing up and no longer children. As the year passed we became better acquainted with our classmates and teachers and began to enjoy our new year of school. In our sophomore year, we were eligible to join the various clubs of our school. We began thinking what we would do after graduation and chose our subjects so that our courses might help us in preparing for work after we completed high school. The highlights of our junior year were the Junjor-Senior Party and the arrival of our rings. These rings made us more conscious of our duty for soon we were to become dignified seniors with much more responsibility. As seniors we took our studies more seriously, as we looked for- ward to graduation and college. We also awaited the day when we would measure for our c aps and gowns since that meant that school was closing. The inspiration we received from our commencement speaker gave us courage to go out as better citizens. President DOROTHY FANIS 23 MARTHA LOUISE BREEDING LINDA KANSADIS BROOKS CHARLES A. Three short years ago we entered the High School department of Lebanon. Yes, we entered wide-eyed and wondering. What could lie before us, what would be our difficulties, our problems, our sor- rows and our joys? All too soon we found the answers to these questions. We found and solved our difficulties and problems. The sorrows were few and easily surpassed. The joys . . . numberless and seemingly unending. Now we are facing our final year; with hope and with regret. Hope that the senior year will be as delightful as the year before, and regret that this will be our last. Thou lowly creature never again shall we hear this, for next year we gain a higher role in the life of Lebanon High School. We experienced strange feelings as we had our first glances at the rooms in which we would attend classes for four years. At our first assembly program we first began to feel the spirit of Lebanon High. We have no doubt that our three remaining years will be as happy and eventful as our first year has been. The program of activities of the Student Cooperative Association is a potent factor in helping students realize that as citizens of their school each one has duties and obligations to be shared, as well as pirivileges to be respected. The entire scope of the S.C.A. activities is guided by the principle of cooperation. The most worthwhile and cooperative project of the 1954-55 S.C.A. was the presentation of the Christmas pageant followed by the celebration of White Christmas. This project was accomplished by the cooperative effort of pupils in every room, every club, the choir, a few grade children, some parents, and the teachers. They proudly display their charter in their room and are just as proud to be seen wearing their National J.C.L. pins on all occasions. The Latin Club had planned to have a dinner party before Christmas, but with the coming of the holidays they decided that they would take the money they would use for their party to give a White Christmas to a needy shut in. The purpose of this club is to help provide for the safety and protection of the students at school and in crossing streets. Its members are very helpful in parking cars at all athletic functions. Every good citizen will observe the regulations of this fine organization and will do his or her part in helping to create respect for its policies. The sponsors are Mabel Campbell, Mrs. Roy Smith and Mrs. Ira Quillen. 70 The Lebanon High School Choir has made rapid strides since its organization five years ago. During the school year it has performed at many func- tions both social and civic. They have made a fine impression on the people who have heard them. The annual White Christmas program featured beautiful Carols sung by the Choir in the traditional festive manner. Members of the Choir have been very cooperative and have shown a fine spirit of cooperation. Our school should feel proud to have such an outstanding organization on our campus. The squad was one of the largest in number in the history of the still young program. This is an indication to the coaching staff of a brighter future for football at L.H.S. It would be fine for as many youngsters as possible to report a gain in August in order to get football up to its proper place with the other athletics and activities in which we place so highly. The games that have been played with other schools of the County have been victorious. In recent years the girls have done much to encourage the growth of softball. Your responsibility is great. You this day become the Seniors of L.H.S., a link to bind all the fine traditions and ideas of the past of this institution to a still more glorious future in all that is to follow. I invite your attention to the great seal of our school. Encircling the figure is to be found a wreath, one half of olive leaves, the other of oak leaves. The olive leaf is a symbol of peace. As a citizen of a great democracy, let the love of peace be a vital part of your education. Encourage it in the hearts of all men for it is an integral part of the philosophy of the school you represent. The oak leaf is a symbol of strength and beauty. We recommend that you always recognize mind over might. Guard your bodies by due consideration of their needs and limitations, endeavoring at all times to re- frain from that which is harmful and unclean. Keep ever in mind that the body is the temple of the soul— likewise, a link with God. Keep it nourished with truth— ever seeking and climbing toward the Eternal Goodness. The crossed-guns of our seal remind us of our pioneer forefathers who pushed back the western wilder- ness to carve for themselves homes. The guns of our seal are for no warlike purpose, nor are they a threat to any person. They admonish us to prepare ourselves for a full and happy life of usefulness. The next symbol found on our seal is the lowly, but useful axe. It likewise, was a very necessary part of our pioneer ancestor ' s equipment. By its industrious ap- plication homes were built. Symbolically speaking, it is still an important ingredient in the building of homes and nations. Insist upon the earnest application of work, work for a purpose. God himself glorifies work. The last movable symbol is the torch— signifying light or knowledge. Let it be your sacred duty to glorify light in your class and entire school. Before light, dark- ness fades away. Begore knowledge, ignorance, the great curse, disappears. Let Lebanon High School be first of all, an institution of light. The hope of our dem- ocracy is, and the hope of the whole world is more light. May you add fuel to its flame and protect it as dear life. Keeping well these things in mind, we never fear that our motto Forward, Always Forward will go un- heeded and unpracticed.
