S., has delved into the possibility of awarding letters to debaters. This year also finds the largest tryout for the Debating team in its history. Eight members went to a Debating Clinic at Laconia in November, which was sponsored by the Bates Debating League. One hundred and thirty were represented from ten different schools in New Hampshire. These debaters listened to instructive speeches on how to debate and analyze this year's topic: International Organizationw. Four Lebanon debaters participated in round-table discussions. During the first week of December, ten members of the squad Went to Dartmouth College where they heard interscholastic debates between outstanding schoolboy teams of New England. During the second Week of December, thirteen members traveled to Randolph, Vermont Where they joined in round-table discussions on 44What Form of International Organization is Best for the Worldfw Ellen Richardson was one of the principal speakers of the day in another part of the program. Her subject was the cause for N. A. T. 0. organization. After a lapse of several Weeks, the team attended a triangular meet at Randolph, Vermont. The teams were from Randolph, Vt., Vermont Agricultural School, and Lebanon. A short While after this Lebanon had after-school debates at Hanover, N. Who is behind those hands that hold out trays, straws, napkins, milk, and dessert? The Cafeteria Club girls, of course! The Club has about thirty members this year who work in one-week shifts so that all the girls will have a chance to be active in the Club. All the food is cooked at the new school this year by our capable Mrs. Brann and three helpers. This year the Club has been very lucky in having Miss Hadley as its advisor. She has been not only a very capable advisor but also a helpful friend. Being in the Cafeteria Club means doing a lot of Work, but it also means having a lot of fun. l 13411 First rowli Bb Duhaime, A. Berube, E. Despres, B. Pearce, L. Griffin, R. Jones, S. Previous to this year, classes were held at Bank Street School, but now, with the removal of junior high students to the new grammar school, they are held here at L. H. S. The students have been creating a large number of vivid freezes, posters, cartoons, and other types of interesting work. Mr. John Duncklee organized it after realizing the need of more students to run the movie projector, without taking them out of classes. At first there were only a few of the upper classinen who showed interest. hut later the interest of many others was gained. Mr. Duncklee, John Callien, and Richard Guycr attended a demonstration on projectors etc. at UNH in early winter, which proved very interesting. FOOTBALL 1n the second year under Coach Royal, the 1952 season saw the Red Raiders, led by Captain Dick Alafat, go into their first game with Towle at Newport a little overconiident. With the temperature hovering at 900, the Raiders were defeated 6-0. Next came the Hrst home game in which a determined Leb team tripped Berlin 18-6. Next Lebanon was out-classed 26-6 by Brattleboro, a newcomer on the Leb schedule. After the Raiders had been toppled by Hartford 15-13, they began to show a little spunk, beating a stubborn St. Johns eleven 6-0. This was the last home game. Lebanon, now a 'Gdark horse in the football competition, clashed with Windsor and were defeated by the Yellow Jackets 7-0 in a hard-fought game. C425 It was the next game with Hanover which will be remembered by Hanover and Lebanon fans for years. The Raiders entered Hanover a two touchdown underdog and defeated them 20-9. In this game, the Raiders probably set a record by scoring 20 points in about 25 seconds. The Raiders ended their season by an impressive 16-0 win over Franklin. Individual scoring went thus: Paul Hastings 253 Richard Boisvert 183 Paul La- Barre 18g Richard Alafat 12, and James Wilson 6. The field hockey girls have every reason to feel proud of this year. Their untiring work, and unconquerable sportsmanship were greatly clue to the devoted Work and effort of their new coach, Miss Priscilla Hadley. The girlsa season ended with seven wins and one tie. The last game which Was canceled because of snow did not appeal to the girls. They felt that the season was incomplete because the game happened to be with Hanover. of-1.9 As always there will he next year to think of and once again the girls will settle down to the tremendous task of keeping alive the same spirit and determination which gave the girls, this year, an undefeated season. The Junior Varsity also had a very successful season with three wins and two ties. Only one letterman was returning, 6g 3 Jackie LeBrun, around whom the club was built. Jackie, a senior, was elected captain of the Raiders. The team finished the season with an over all record of five wins and 14 losses. lt tied for last place in the Twin State League with a 3-11 record. Eight seniors played their last year for Lebanon. They were Capt. Jackie LeBrun, Dick Alafat, Paul LaBarre, Jimmy Wilson, Harry Davison, Kenneth Haley, Ray Roy, and George Camp. Three juniors, Paul Tremblay, Romeo Morin, Donald Gunzinger, and one sophomore, Rodney Greene, rounded out the squad. With the exception of Jackie, the rest of the squad came up from the J.V.'s. 1465 The game that no one will forget is the double overtime victory over Hartford, the TSL champs, 61-59. Before a jam-packed crowd, Paul LaBarre sank the winning basket in the sudden death period. The Raiders also won their two games with arch- rival Hanover by scores of 44-33 and 53-48. Captain LeBrun was honored by making the TSL All Star second team. Dick Alafat and Paul LaBarre received honorable mention. Young Rodney Greene will be the player to watch in the next two years. He has the natural ability to become a good ball player. 1n the individual scoring department Capt. Jackie Lebrun was high with 221 points. Following Lebrun in order were Dick Alafat 163, Jimmy Wilson 150, Roddy Greene 109, Paul LaBarre 39, Paul Trembley 28, Harry Davison 27, Romeo Morin 12, Kenneth Haley 12, Donald Gunzinger 10, and George Camp 9. The team was cut and set up into varsity and jayvees. The girls then began their season with an impressive win over Windsor beating their hosts 33-26. They then toppled Towle of Newport 33-26. The team was looking for another win and found it at the expense of Hanover with a score of 24-16. Coach Smith's sextet then overtook Hartford 29-22. The girls were again successful, defeating Stevens 28-21. Next to fall before the Lassies was West Lebanon 30-15. The first home game and those following, saw a list of successive wins. The Raiderettes proceeded to down Windsor 35-22, and then outscored Newport 29-21. They continued on their way as they topped West Leb- anon a second time 45-24. The Lebanon team then defeated Stevens 40-24, and again were victorious over Hartford 17-14. Last on the schedule was their old rival Hanover. This contest would determine whether or not the Lebanon Lassies would remain un- defeated. They once again came through on top trouncing Hanover 32-20. This was M83 the first undefeated girl's basketball team of Lebanon in nearly ten years. A great deal of credit goes to Miss Smith who worked with these girls and stuck with them when the going got rough. lt is noteworthy to add that Lebanon High has one of the smoothest defensive courts in the Upper Valley. Also the fine passwork of the forwards was av great asset to the team. Individual scoring honors go to Lorraine Devine who tallied 152, Sybil Martel with 139, and Alice Berube with 4-3. Substitutes for the starting six were: Irene LaCoss, Joan Ruel, Barbara Dunbar, Judy Brown, Karleen Dawson. They saw some action in most every game and have a lot of credit coming to them. Next year's team will be without the names of Jean LaCoss, this year's captaing Lorraine Devine, Alice Berube, and Judy Brown. The Junior Varsity rounded oil their season with a total of 2 wins, 5 losses, and 1 tie. Betty Jo Cloud was high scorer. Many of the members of this J.V. squad will un- doubtedly be seeing a good deal of action next year. By the time mid-November came around, and the ski boys who had been on the football team showed up for practice. All of the hard work, like cutting brush on the slope and fixing the jumps had been done. To keep in condition until snow came they played soccer and touch football. Most of the ski boys who had not been on the football team were in very good condition from the running they had been doing for the Community building cross country team. During the Christmas vacation snow fell in large enough amounts to allow skiing. After vacation the ski team took part in meets at K.U.A., Proctor, Gould Academy, and its own carnival. They won at K.U.A., Proctor, and their own carnival, but suffered their only loss of the year at Gould, placing second in a six team field. Meanwhile the B team won its meet with Proctor HBV, K.U.A. and took fourth in an MA team meet at Woodstock. On February 20 and 21 the team went to Berlin and won the State Class A championship. On the following week end they again went to Berlin, winning the down- hill, slalom, and cross-country, to take the New England Championships with a margin of 22 points. Two Weeks later they went to Lyndonville and Won the Easterns to make a clean sweep of the three major meets. ln all three meets a Lebanon skier won the skimiester, Eugene Boisvert in the State and Easterns, and Curly Carr winning it in the New Englands. A The week after the Easterns, Eugene Boisvert and Curly Carr, who had been chosen as New Hampshireis representatives to the Nationals, flew out to Alta, Utah where the National Championships were held. With seven returning lettermen, the Raiders should be close to the top in class MBW competition. Many hopes were darkened by the loss oi such stalwarts as 4'Red7, Johnson, Wayne Dupree, and Captain Jerry Wood, who came in 6th in the New Englands last year, but as spring practice began the prospects seemed to have improved considerably. Some of the returning veterans are: Seniors-fNoel LeRrun, one of last yearis New England aspirants who specializes in the shot, discus, and high jump, Paul LaBarre our top pole vaulter and low hurdlerg Dick Roisvert, a pole vaulterg Harry Davison, a high hurdler and 4-40 dash mang Carleton Sanborn, a mile runner, Raymond Roy, who will throw the discus and shotg Bruce Corrette, who will run the 100 yard dash or the 220 yard dash, and George Camp, the returning manager. BASEBALL A The outlook for a successful baseball season in 1953 should be rated as ufair to goodn as this book goes to press. Several key positions must he filled as graduation claimed several regulars last june. A starting pitcher is needed most. Other positions that are open to the 35 candidates are first base, second base, shortstop, two outfield positions, and a No. 2 catcher, having left important gaps. Last year the squad turned in an outstanding record, handling a tough schedule to end the season with eight wins, four losses, and one 13-inning tie. The team an- nexed double wins over Hartford 11-6 and 5-15 Hanover 5-4 and 13-6, split with Franklin, winning 8-4 and losing 8-5, and divided games with Stevens, dropping the first 2-1 and winning the second 11-4. ln two exciting games with Towle, Captain Ruel pitching a one hitter and winning 1-0. ln the second encounter, the two teams battled to a 3-3 tie in 13 innings. They also took the Alumni into camp 5-4. Keene, however, took the measure of the Maroon and White 17-4 and 8-3. Returning for the 1953 schedule are Captain Jimmy Wilson, catcher, Eugene Boisvert, pitcher, Richard Alafat, third base, Dick Guyer, first base, Robert Brown, infield, and Dick Cage, outfield. This year's squad will play a thirteen-game schedule. Two games are booked with each of the following: Keene, Stevens, Hartford, Franklin, Towle, Hanover, and one game with the Alumni, to be played the day following graduation. 1529 First row: C. Mooney, S. White, J. LaCoss, R. Jones, C. Foster, E. Richardson, I. LaCoss. Second rgxw: L. Devine, J. Ruel, K. Dawson, S. Louks, N. Shepard, B. Dunbar, N. Racicot, . Barton. Third row: M. Dawson, Mrs. Lambert, Coachg J. Leonard, Manager. . SOFTBALL Coach: lV1ILDRED LAMBERT Manager: JEANNE LEONARD Faced with the loss of four of last year's capable performers, Coach Lambert and the Raiderettes approach the 1953 season with high hopes that the weatherman will co-operate in providing adequate conditions for practice sessions. Catching and the outfield present problems to lie solved if the Raiderettes are to maintain their excellent record of 22 wins and 114 losses during the past three seasons. Returning veterans include Capt. Regis Jones, Jean LaCoss, Carroll Foster, Shirley Vlfhite, and Irene LaCoss.
