FIELD HOCKEY Coach: BEULAH JENNY Co-Captains: LORETTA LABARRE, MARIE BELISLE Manager: DOROTHY BRIGGS Assistant Manager: JANET FORREST On September 13, about forty hockey enthusiasts reported to Coach Beulah Jenny in order to begin praotice for a season which later turned out to be the first undefeated season in several years. More than half of these girls were experienced first liners. Much of the credit for the successful season is due to Coach Jenny whose patience and coaching ability were greatly appreciated. Her ideas of stressing team- work rather than praising individual players acted as an incentive and brought about the spirit of co-operation and determination which is so valuable in good sportsmanship. Much credit is also due to the brilliant defensive playing of the backfield, including the Outstanding playing of Goalie Lulu Belisle. Their hard hits and fast passing plays were valuable in making possible the scoring of goals. The outstanding offensive high scorers were Nancy Cantlin, in the first place with four goals, and Jean Dionne in second place with three. The hardest fought game, of the season was the one with Newport. However, the most exciting and important victories were those played with Hanover. All of the other girls on the squad deserve praise for their interest, co-operation, and willingness to practice regardless of the weather. They will be rewarded next year when it will be their turn to shine. This year's team has cleaned the slateg the departing seniors sincerely hope that the 1949-1950 team will chalk up another undefeated season. T321 gif '. BOYS' BASKETBALL Last November when the candidates for boys' basketball reported to Coach Kingsbury, he had to pick his team mostly from last yearis junior varsity and re- serves, only three lettermen having returned. Wiith the first game nearing and the boys with no hope of a bid for any tournament, Coach picked his first team from the three lettermen and two of last yearis junior varsity. Lebanon wasnit going to get a chalice to go to any tournament because we had a Class B schedule and the N.H.l'l.S.A.A. rated us as a Class A school. We didn't get a chance to go to the A tournament 'because we didnit play enough class A schools. After practicing for three weeks we opened the season in a game with a veteran Bradford five and emerged victorious 446-31. Lebanon then collected two victories over Hartford and Woodsville and lone victories over Franklin and West Lebanon. Then we suffered our only defeat of the season to St. ,lohnis of Concord by a single point. After that defeat we finished the season with ten straight wins. The wins were: two victories each over Stevens, Clark School, and Hanover, and lone victories over West Lebanon, Franklin, and Bradford. We avenged our earlier defeat by edging St. ,lohnis 46-42. Lebanon scored 765 points during the season for a game average of 42.5 while holding their opponents to 583 points which gave them a game average of 32.30 points. GIRLS' BASKETBALL Although the girls lost every game this season, they fought very hard and showed excellent sportsmanship. Practically every visiting team spoke of their clean playing. This year's team showed good passwork, but despite this asset, they were unable to chalk up the points necessary to win a game. Six members of the team are leaving this year: Barb Yelle, Loretta LaBarre, Laurette Berube, Marie Belisle, Barb Szyman, and Marjorie Nichols. Bev Dean, the very capable manager, will also be leaving. Many newcomers, however, show very promising talents. Perhaps the most exciting game of the season, was Leb's tilt with Hanover. ln this game, the girls, inspired by cheering spectators, lost the game by two points leaving a 20-22 score. We, the members of the u4f9,' basketball team wish the team of 50,, all the luck we didn7t have and sincerely hope that it will .bring the girlas team back to a high level in years to come. l36l First Row Cleft to rightj: A. Several girls have signed up for the squad and if the girls are fortunate enough to have good weather for practieing they should build up u strong and suceessful team. A great loss has heen suffered due to the fact that most of lust yearis tirst team have graduated. ORCHESTRA This year for the first time, the orchestra was added to the curriculum as a regular subject. lt has done reniarkzvbly well in spite of the fact that some of its most outstanding members graduated last year. ln addition to playing for assemblies. the orchestra has furnished part of the entertainment for the HOpen Housew evening of Education Week, the October Music Night Concert, and the Variety Show of February 4. The programs were made more interesting to both participants and audience by Mr. Fleckls addition of several new selections. One of the last public appearances of the orchestra was on March 25, when a concert was given by the musical groups for the benefit of those who were planning to attend the All-New England and All-State Music Festivals. During the fall term the group studied material for the proposition which all high schools in this area have been debating: Resolved, that the United Nations now be revised into a federal world government. ln addition to this preparatory work, the team acted as hosts to a speech clinic held at the high school in November. A large number of students and coaches at- tended to hear speakers on debating, listen to a debate lbetween Dartmouth and Bates, and participate in an extemporaneous speaking contest. During the winter and spring months the team's activities were as follows: two sessions of practice debates with Kimball Union Academy, two sessions of practice debates with the Dartmouth freshmen, a single group of four judged debates with teams from Holderness, four non-decision debates in a visit to Newport, and an exhibition debate before the Lebanon Rotary Club. Two teams from Lebanon attended a tournament al Laconia High School on March 5. ln contests held there, Lebanon defeated Holderness, Clinton, and Leavitt and lost to a team from Dover. Lebanon also participated in the Bates College Interscholastic Debating Tourn- ament for New Hampshire held during the latter part of March. Dick Moody and Rita Hammond met a team from Keene. Kenneth Smith and Diane West opposed a pair of debaters from Towle High School in Newport. Those who have participated in debating during the year are as follows: Ellen Fennelly '50, Diane West '50, Rita Hammond '50, Richard Moody '50, Kenneth Smith '50, Barbara Despres '5l, Marilyn Hamhleton '5l, Robert Foster '50, and Mary Heistad '5l. The debating club coach, Mr. C. Paul Quimby, jr., deserves much credit for his efforts in coaching the debaters and for the enthusiasm with which he instructed them. i 50 l First Row Cleft to rightjz M. Hambleton, M. Paul, J. LIBRARY CLUB Under the leadership of their advisor, Mrs. Hadley, the librarians have put in a very successful and profitable year. The library has been straightened out, and some of the books have been mended. New supplies were ordered including mending tape, book pockets, white ink and cards. ll was decided not to get any more date due slips as the poekets can be used for this. Approximately 250 new books have been put in circulation this year and more have been ordered. Posters were made and plaeed in different parts of the school to advertise the new books. At the beginning of the year we had a meeting and elevted new oflieers. They are: lVlarjorie Adamson. President: Rita Hammond, Seeretary: Janet Tremblay. Treasurer: and Marilyn Paul. Reporter. A set of rules were drawn up both for the Librarians and the users of the books. l.5ll First Row Cleft to rightbz A. Pratte, E. Wheaton, C. Johnson, A. Therrien, L. Maville C. Dion, A. Dulac, M. A group of chattering, laughing girls showed up at the first meeting called November 30, l94l-8. After a bit of social contact, the meeting Was called to order by Miss Perry. The officers were chosen, and the duties assigned. At the third meeting, the club made plans for a dancef-which, incidentally, was a great success. There are approximately thirty girls in the vluh taking turns al the various duties.
