The year 1935 will always be remembered as one of outstanding achievement in the annals of Lebanon High School. Alumni will proudly recall this season because it represents the finest and most spirited Red and Blue football team in more than a decade. Although early in September only a few players of the previous season were included in its number, the 1935 pigskin machine gained momentum in successive spurts. After hurdling the preliminary laps successfully, tying the Hershey Industrial School, completely submerging Hershey and Elizabethtown High Schools, and hold- ing a veteran and destined-to-be-undefeated Harrisburg Catholic High to a 7-0 score, the team was confronted by a ,difficult conference schedule. The first obstacle in the path of the Cedars was Minersville High. Lebanon High journeyed one Friday evening to Minersville and jolted the Miners by handing them a 13-7 setback. Realizing what grit, determination, and fight would do for them, the team, fresh from a thrilling school pep-meeting, hurled itself headlong against its traditional rival, Reading. The whole town was excited by that game, and half the town saw it, crowding every inch of the bleachers at Third and Green. There the Red Knights found themselves unhorsed by the Cedars of Lebanon. The defeats of four years were avenged by this one mortal blow struck at Readings much-vaunted Knights. After this taste of the glory of conquest, L, H. S. was inspired to even greater heights. Another team of Miners visited Lebanon, and Pottsville High received its greatest shock of the season. Not only did Lebanon win this game 20-0, but so completely were Pottsville's brightest hopes stifled, that this team was beaten more severly than any other one on the Lebanon High School schedule. Following this climax of the season, Lebanon suffered its only conference defeat at York on a raw, bleak day. Then followed an episode which has clearly convinced everyone of the true greatness of the team. The Cedars were down, but were they out? They turned sadness to gladness by stopping the Steelton Steamrollers with a 7-7 score, which was really no true indication of the superiority of the Red and Blue on that occasion. After redeeming itself in the eyes of the students, coaches, and fans, this great team went forth for the last time to another foreign field of battle and snatched victory from defeat, playing against a desperate Lancaster High. Lebanon High has never ceased paying homage to this team in whose honor was held the first annual Community Football Banquet. ln the future the might of other Cedar teams will be gauged by comparison with the team of 1935. THE basketball season of 1936 will always be recalled with pride by Lebanon High School, for one of the scrappiest little teams in the recent history of the school won game after game. Making up in speed and spirit what it lacked in size, the Varsity squad, all Seniors except two, captured the Central Pennsylvania League title-the first championship for Lebanon in twentyfone years. And that was not all. Perfect teamwork and an unsurpassed passing attack carried the Cedars into the semi-finals for the State Championship. In the first of the play-off games, they defeated Mechanicsburg, and so earned the right to meet Lititz for the District Three Championship. This game was but a stepping stone to greater achievements: Lebanon's speedy courtsters advanced to the District One Championship game with Lower Merion's powerful quintet, whom they defeated in a thrilling battle. The Cedars reached the heights when they engaged Frackville High School, whose winning streak for thirty-eight games was rudely shattered by another Lebanon victory. And so Lebanon High School won the championship of District Eleven. A bitter battle ensued between Newport and the Cedars for the right to enter the State Championship finals. Much to their disappoinment the Cedars lost this with Newport by only one point. Shortly thereafter Newport became the State Champions. Nevertheless, the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-six salutes the Cedars, Lebanon High's doughty warriors, who have so valiantly and nobly brought fame and honor to their Alma Mater. May the memory of these fighting champions ever shine as brilliantly as the lustrous trophies they have brought home, EARLY SEASON GAMES LEBANON ,,,,,,,, ...........,.......,,.... 4 1 MYERSTOWN .,.... ..,.... FRANK SHUEY - - - - - FORWARD Captain and guiding light of the Red and Blue's championship quintet, 'iDink was next to the highest scorer of the League and probably the most outstanding player ever to grace a Cedar lineup. Fast, deceptive, an accurate shot, a hard fighter, and a strong man defensively, this midget forward ranks high as one of the State's best all-around dribblers of the year. D1cK RITTLE - - - - - FORWARD Butch was Shuey's running mate at the forward post, a tireless Hoor worker, and a speedy ball handler. Rittle was at his best when the pressure was the greatest, and his spectacular playing in the Mpinches provided many a thrill and helped bring home many a victory. DICK Fox - - - - - CENTER This lanky pivot man is only a Iunior and so has another year to represent Lebanon on both the gridiron and the court. The League's fourth from the highest scorer, Fox shone as a long-shot artist. Although pitted against taller and heavier opponents all season, Dick came through with flying colors. PETER EHRGOOD - - - - A GUARD Strong both offensively and defensively, but particularly as a defensive man, Pete held down numerous opposing stars and did much towards annexing several crowns. An uncanny knack of retrieving the ball from the bankboards and starting it up the floor for Cedar scores, was his favorite pastime. VERNON FOLMER ----- GUARD Although not a starter at the beginning of the season Vernie proved his mettle by capturing a Varsity berth by mid-season. Always one of the fastest men on the floor, this tiny dribbler's 'Aleech-like guarding on the court was in no little way responsible for a championship year. IOE BEATTIE - - - - - GUARD Another Iunior, Ioe was a consistenly Fne player. His tenacious guarding proved the Waterloo of many good opponents, who sought vainly to Hshake him off. His frequent field goals from mid-court saved the dav for Lebanon more than once, and helped in winning our first pennant. CYRIL SCHAEFFER - - A CENTER - FORWARD - GUARD Sig was the Cedar utility man, being able to step into any position and do well. His sensational last second shot from the center ring, won the first William Penn game for us, and from then on he was ofttitnes called upon to help the Red and Blue cause, which he never failed to do. HENRY EBERLY - ---- GUARD This year's football captain, Hen. also acquitted himself brilliantly as a reserve member of the basketball squad. A reliable defensive man, Eberly did his part when needed. Playing most of that Eastern State Final against Newport, he aided materially in keeping the Cedars in the game, though for a losing cause. A ,,wwv .- tfififan ML, ,K gf ffm QC' ,wh Sherlock Holmes Scores Again WE WERE in our rooms on Baker Street one evening, and I was-I remember-by the centre table writing The Adventure of the Man Without a Cork Leg twhich had so puzzled the Royal Society and all the other scientific bodies of Europej, and Holmes was amusing himself with a little revolver practice. It was his custom of a summer evening to lire around my head, just shaving my face, until he had made a photograph of me on the opposite wall, and it is a slight proof of his skill that many of these portraits in pistol shots were considered admirable likenesses. He paused in his pastime and lit his pipe. MI see, my dear Watson, that you have put on your winter underwear. Marvelous, Holmes. But how did you deduce it? Elementary, my dear fellow, elementary. You have forgotten to put on your trousers. I sat aghast at his penetration. Holmes, however, merely lifted his left eyebrow as was his habit, and sent half a dozen perfect smoke rings chasing each other toward the ceiling. I suppose, he said at length, interrupting my work, that you have heard of the singular incident which occurred in Lebanon recently. I nodded. Holmes, twisting himself on the chair into the figure 8, continued. A student of the high school there, was discovered to be awake during one of the assembly programs. Of course, such extraordinary conduct was not allowed to go unnoticed. To get to the bottom of the mystery, Philo Vance and Charlie Chan were called in. And from what I have gathered, they seem to be completely baffled, I casually observed. Holmes shrugged. I can well believe it, he retorted. Perpetual motion or squaring the circle would baffle those two. They're infants, are Vance and Chan. This was one of the things I always admired in Holmes. There was no profes- sional jealousy in him, such as characterizes so many other men. My friend rolled up his sleeve and taking his hypodermic from a vest pocket, proceeded to push the plunger the whole way down. I shuddered and tried to revive the conversation. You intend to enter this case yourself? I asked. Enter it? Holmes exploded, Whyt, my dear fellow, I've solved it. I sprang from my chair to the ceiling in amazement. Noting my astonishment, he settled himself comfortably and began. You know my methods, Watson. Having read considerably of the case in the papers, it was quite elementary to reach a conclusion. This young man, havinq confessed his guilt to the serious charge against him, was investigated thoroughly. It was discovered that he had also been behaving very unusually since the dawn of his high school life. Not only had he never copied during examinations, but he had always kept strict training while out for the basket- ball team. And I may add that he also put on several programs during home room meetings. I was spellbound. Such conduct was beyond the largest stretch of the imagina- tion. I said as much to Holmes. Ah, they were deep waters, Watson, but no problem is beyond solution. Then, after a second's hesitation, he added. Of course, that statement does not inclu,de trig questions and Latin translations. But to continue. Vance and Chan, the nitwits, were stopped in their tracks. They could get nowhere. 'I'hey thought they had exhausted every angle, but they missed one, and a very important one. And that was? I said. A'The fact that the boy in question was a victim of insomnia. In what other way could he possibly stay awake during an assembly program? Wonderful, I cried. Every problem becomes very childish when once it is explained to you, Holmes remarked, and with those words he took his violin from its place on the wall and began to play. The strains of The Music Goes 'Round and 'Roundn drifted to my ears as I sadly took my leave, and set out into the soupy fog of London. -vw X, Vs -ii 'TT 'VX EEST' ' 5 ' .- af f .'.'3'--- M.Gl M XX f KL ' Zh I5 4:51133 ,..-A . .215 MZ' 1 iii: .. i 1. 'y vi? 5 f 1 N Class Prophecy IMAGINE our surprise when our well-known French teacher told us that she was gifted with supernatural powers and could see into the future. After much persua- sion, she finally consented to conduct a seance for the Senior Class. Not a seat was vacant in the auditorium when the eagerly awaited day arrived. A solemn hush descended upon the chattering audience as Miss Hoffman, garbed in flowing white robes and wearing an Oriental turban, advanced to the front of the platform. A gasp was audible as a white mist seemed to envelop her. With hands outstretched, she slowly began: The years are rapidly unfolding-unfolding- unfolding before me and now I can clearly see events in the year 1946. Behold, I see a huge night club, situated at Eighth and Chestnut Streets, under the capable management of Howard Brensinger, where 'Beatie' Bialostok is enter- taining a packed house with her graceful and aesthetic toe-.dancing. I see someone seated at the foremost table admiringly watching 'Beatief His face seems vaguely familiar-why, yes, it's 'Bob' Artz. Here also patrons are .dancing to the toe- tickling strains of Spencer fStanleyl Deck's 'Collegiansf The women are going mad over the crooner of this orchestra. Can it be? Yes, it isl It's 'Eddie' Miller. But who is this husky gentleman coming toward me? Why, it's 'Bucky' Miller, the official bouncer of customers who have indulged too enthusiastically. He has recently used his talent on Dick Bell and Ed Felty. The scene is cnanging. A large church has been built near the night club. Here I see Opal Sanderson, a revival leader of great renown, winning the ejected members with her immortal address--'Go and Sin No Moref Marne Simpson is one of her most ardent followers. Again the scene shifts. This time I see above the new Colonial Theatre in blazing lights-AClaire Fitting starring in Purple Passiorzf Co-starred with him are 'Izzy' Sando and 'Ken' Gloss, the successors of the famous Fred Astaire - Ginger Rogers dance team. During the intermission, I hear 'Mim' Hiester and 'lim' Klett discussing the latest bit of scandal. It seems that Mary Adams, a Lebanon girl, has pursued the famous Claire to Hollywood-but in vain. Now an amusing scene appears before me. While Orpha Smith and her hen- pecked husband, Iohn Doughty, are sitting idly in their Pleasant Hill home, suddenly the silence is shattered by a resounding knock at the rear door. Orpha rushes to find out the author of the commotion. There on the threshold stands that Knight of the Road fbum to youj-Earl Reber. How about a cup of coffee, mum? he asks. Iohn, standing behind his wife, hears the request and urges her to comply, but is immediately squelched by a baleful glare from Orpha. Finally, her gentle heart is touched by Earl's bedraggled condition. She goes to her well-stocked larder and brings forth a dog biscuit, which she presents to the poor Knight. Earl regards the biscuit thoughtfully and after a time asks, Are you sure you can spare it? His only answer is a slam of the door. Now I hear a faint noise in the distance. It is growing louder as it draws near! I can now distinguish voices. People are discussing the list of co-workers that Stewart Shapiro, the new mayor, has just announced. Some of them are: Iohn Iackson, Official Dog Catcher: Peter Ehrgood, Street Cleaner: Donald Muttoni, the ' bl' ' h' h ives all editor of 'Three Cents a Day,' the newsboys own pu ication w ic g the latest yells fWillis Bomberger and Thomas Roller are said to use them with startling resultslg Hen Eberly, Box-car Pusherg Marion Miller, Private Secretary. Even in his high school days he startled the students by trying to shut himself up in his locker. lust then the class bell rang, startling us out of our deep attention, and reluctantly we filed back to resume our daily grind, and to ponder long over the happenings that Miss Hoffman had foretold. Unrevealecl News CROWDED CONDITIONS TO BE RELIEVED The School Board announced recently a plan to relieve the crowded conditions in the High School Building. All teachers will be removed in the near future to make additional room for the ever-increasing student enrollment. lf this fails to bring about the desired result, the janitors will be dismissed and the boiler room will be used for classes. INSTITUTE, 6-O Lebanon High Schools undefeated eleven scored an impressive 6-O win over the A. B. C. lnstitute last Saturday afternon in a very colorful battle. Lebanon's stunning new uniforms of silk trimmed with Elizabethan lace and done in pastel shades of pink and blue were the last word in chic. A. B. Cfs outfits in orchid and cerise were too-too divine. Their headgears were also in the latest fashion, patterned after the Marie Antoinette style. A serious injury marred the fray when Glutz, of the A. B. C. gridders, broke a fingernail. He was carried from the field amidst a tremendous ovation from the stands. fyf I Y 'X K7 XL r X Q. Xb . You stride down the corridor, whistling a tune in that Hljoy, lt's Great to Be Alive manner. You arrive at your locker, reach for the handle, turn it and pull. Nothing happens. Mmmm, you mutter, is this going to start again? More viciously this time, you pull again. Nothing happens. The door is stuck. You peel off' your overcoat and set to work in earnest. Bracing one knee against the front of the locker adjoining yours, and placing both hands firmly on the handle of your own locker door, you breath a silent prayer and pull. There is a noise like a freight train trying to stop on a down grade, but the door doesn't budge. Tiny beads of perspiration are dripping from your forehead and your tie is awry. Well, you tell yourself, this blankety-blank thing's got to open some blankety- blank time, and you return to your task, First you tug gently, coaxingly, then you struggle frantically, desperately, and finally you pull and yank like a Sideshow wild man. Nothing happens. Ah, you exclaim, I have it! And you walk slowly away, with nary a backward glance at the locker. After you have taken a dozen steps, you turn and casually stroll back. You reach for the handle, turn it gently, and give it an ever-so-gentle tug, but the darned think doesn't open. You swear under your breath, shake the handle, pound the door, and make a racket like Vesuvius in eruption, but all to no avail. By this time you are panting and groaning and snarling an.d growling like Strangler Lewis during a championship wrestling match, and you look like a man who has just been run over by a Steamroller, but do you stop? No! Assuring yourself that the locker must have been the creation of some diabolical Oriental in a Fu Manchu thriller, or else a replica of the United States Treasury vaults in Washington, you renew your attack, At last! The door swings open, and you make a futile effort to catch the books that tumble from the crowded little shelf to the floor. Papers flutter like leaves in autumn and a German II whacks you on the cranium as you stoop for your other books. After all has been replaced, you breathe a sigh of relief and hang up your coat, but the hook isn't big enough and your coat falls in a heap on the locker floor. You stuff your hat as gently as possible into the tiny space, but you know full well that by 12:35 it will look like Kate bmith had been sitting on it. Now, to collect the books you'll need for your first few classes. Ooopsl there goes your locker-mates geometry crashing to the floor. But now you have finished, and you slam the door to make sure it will stay shut, but it doesn't shut. lnsead it bounds open again. You grit your teeth and count ten. And this time you close the door slowly, but the handle won't catch: your coat's in the way. ''l:5lankety-blank-blankety-blank door, Blankety-blank,blank. Slam! Crash! blaml Slam! Bang . . .
