As the army corps advances. Our high school battlefields are noxx' to be deserted as we advance to occupy more of Lifes battlefields. Let us reminisce by recalling some of the battles we have fought together here in dear old Lebanon High. The command HTO Booksln. the summon for troops to assemble for war, was called from the Sophomore battlefields by our commanding general. lames Whitman. Under his leadership our army was organized and prepared for whatexfer might follow. Uur only cessation of hostilities was a May party held in the gymnasium. All lighting forces were withdrawn throughout the summer months This interlude xx as broken bv the familiar bloxxing of bugles and crashing of artillerv Our next scrimmages xxere in the unior Fields ln the encounters this xear our commander in chief xxas Luther Long Although he xxas nexx to the role of leading such a mighty aimv the call to battle found him ready for the fray The ammunition for our troops xx as meagre and the road leading on to victory vxas a slippery and a treacherous one The beating of drums and the thun f der of artlllery continued until the xxmter months xx ere at their xx orst lt xx as at this stage of a fairs that our forces xvithdrexx to the barracks in the gvmnasium and participated in a Qhristmas dance Rested and refreshed by this diversion xxe again took our old places in the familiar ranks ust at thls time a truce was declared and during the reprieve xxe xx ere given a furlough to spend back home with our families and fr1ends Probably thi annual vacation meant more to us this year than it did in any of the three years in Lebanon High because of the intense xx ear1ness of troops and officers alike The encounters xxhich occurred in the months to folloxx xxere of little conse quence so the troops suspended all action long enough to indulge in entertainment in the form of a May party in the ever faithful gymnasium Things had been going too smoothly f us t seemed for in the midst of the merry month of May happened probably the most disastrous thing in the history of any class graduating from Lebanon High The lines of one of our allies Harding S ssc as xxxx .t . Uur troops had to rearrange all formations. and allow the Harding forces to share our trenches with us. All our battles had to be terminated during the course of a morning so that our allies could have access to our weapons in the afternoon. lnnu- merable difficulties arose, and it was indeed not a sorrowful army which departed from the fields of action for the summer vacation. Conditions existing in the fall of the year, when warfare was resumed, were by no means promising. ln addition to having crowded ranks, we also had the problems resulting from the occu- pation of the Senior Fields. Luther Long was again chosen as commander, but his position was not the only important one in the army. It seemed that in this series of battles each member of Luther's army played just as important a part in the success or failure as he did. A mighty drive was conducted to try to persuade the citizens backing our army to provide for us better conditions by erecting 1 nexx senioi high school This idea obviously did not meet with the approvil of the public in geneml and so xxe had to continue our battles with the same demoralizing conditions pre vailing Meinbers of our army xxon additional merit by taking part in the school plav xxhich xx as presented in the beginning of the month of November One of the mam interests of the army in general xx 'is the presentation of the class p ay Thi production in xx hich Piivates Zecher ind Hill performed so 'idmirably xxas 1 huge succe s and inspired all to go forxx ard xxith courage Uur battles from this time on xx ere fought with much steadfastness 'ind enthusiasm and all ended xx ith a victorious banquet The cry An Armistice broke upon our ears so suddenly that xxe could hardly believe that victory xxas at last ours Was the xxar really oxer when xxe triumphantlx marched down those aisles singing the Alma Mater marching to receive our diplomas the spoils of the victor? Wotild all wars for us be at last term1nated7 No not that It merely means that the battles of our high school divs are over not the battles of our lixes We have many more strug qles of life to face and they xxill require courage steadfastnes and faith Let each soldier in the ranks as he marches forward carry on his banner the xx ords Be Strong We are not here to play to dream to drift We have hard xxork to do and loads to lift Shun not the struggle face it Tis Gods gift KATHRYN ZIMMERMAN Class Historian K 2 f S ' 3 . ., ' ' I, 1 'c , r ' c c . rl ' . . Q Q FOO'l'B14LL At the beginning of his third year at Lebanon High School, Head Coach Schlosser issued a call on August 30, requesting all grid candidates to report the next day for preliminary training and conditioning. Some one hundred and twenty-live lovers of the great classic reported. Among all these Coaches Schlosser and Reismger had but one letter man and several scrubs from the previous season s team to form the nucleus After several weeks of intensive training the day for the first game dawned clear On October 7 1933 the gridiron season opened in a game with Elizabethtown High Phe ll town boys left the held at the short end of a 38 O score Victory again was ours the following vteek at the expense of Hershey 36 13 It 19 interesting to note that this was Lebanon s first gridiron victory over the Chocolate Town Boys Bethlehem High was encountered the following Saturday but the running and passing attack of Lebanon which had heretofore been successful xx as of no avail and the boys were stung by defeat 38 0 A comeback was staged against Minersville October 28 Lebanon coming home with half the bacon the score reading 6 6 For the second successive year Lebanon fell before th onslaught of Reading this time 12 O Pottsville the following vxeek made the team again feel the pangs of defeat 19 O Next the boys lourneyed to Allentown and for the fifth successive xx eek Lebanon was unable to turn in a victory and so succumbed with the score of 64 0 ln a Thanksgiving Day con test the Red and Blue was not able to cope with the strong Lancaster boys and the Red Rose emerged victorious 25 0 SCHEDULE 1933 1934 Elizabethtown Hershey Bethlehem Mmersx ille Pottsville Allentown Lancaster Sw om ' ---- 'rf-'ffffm - LW- - ' ' -' we - ' '-,', ,,f,,,, - .fe ...,,.., Qs. .xxXX.xXxXXx.X v r,....tt.a x.x.Xx X rams,..a.tcc,N.tc,.s,.c..c....,t,..Wccts.......,..cNtc..c,.,ct,c,N x.xx .... tc,ct,.,,cc.,.,.,c-,..,.ccrc............ , , , , tt tt , tt s r t C BASKE YBALL Once more we viewed a Lebanon High Basketball team, but this time, one that finished on a middle level--not spectacular as in other years--but not forlorn. Coach Schlosser's gang rounded up eight victories and dropped eleven, The team of basketeers, representing our school, were all last season's scrubs, since there was no varsity material around which to build a team. In keeping with the custom of starting the season with Myerstown the Red and Blue experienced great diffi- culty in edging out a 29 to 27 victory A few nights later the Catholic High was completely over whelmed 28 4 The speed and accuracy of the local boys proved too much for Bethlehem the following week and as a result our boys walked off the floor in a blaze of brilliance leaving the score at 3l 28 ourneylng to the Capital City Lebanon met their first Central Pennsylvania league opponent in William Penn This game was a complete disappointment for the Red and Blue was forced to accept the short end of a 33 20 decision ln the same week the Alumni proved too strong for the locals the score being 30 27 A new hope was instilled into the boys after their 19 17 yictory over York but Steelton a few nights later proved too strong setting our boys back to the tune of 36 22 The next three games Lancaster ohn Harris and Reading were all disappointing by large margins The Chocolate Mixers of Hershey came to town to lose their seventh consecutive league game 33 22 The following week Lebanon yourneyed to Allentown to engage in the tightest and tensest game ever waqed in that city but Lebanon s little warriors had to be content with a 26 24 score William Penn and York defeated the locals in rapld succession but lebanon s time was doomed to come and it came The little giant killers of Lebanon knocked off the two league leaders Steelton and Lancaster in succession 38 23 and 28 27 respectively to give the fans something to talk about Lebanon failed to continue its bombardmg when tht ohn Harris five overpowered the Red and Blue 22 27 Reading conqueror of Lebanon on gridiron also proved more powerful on the court to take a second game which w as poorly officiated 34 20 hnding the season with Hershey the newly formed rival Lebanon completely satisfied the hi herto unfilled desire of winning both games in one year by a spectacular 30 28 score My Q rstow n Bethlehem William Penn Alumni York Steelton Lancaster Iohn Harris Her hey Allentown Wllllalll Penn York Steelton Lancaster ohn Harrts Reading Hershey SCHEDULE f- NO DJ ka-D F'F'I l I f 'l L l L l l 'F'l'1F'F't F' IIIIIIIIIIIIIICIEIII l . l ' - 1 y ' I v r -f 7 Y ' 1 . - I y - v , T . .
