And Should Be Considered Graduates Of The Class, 1983 The LHS Class of 1983 began its Com- mencement on Sunday. May 22, with President Todd Meece leading the proces- sion of soon-to-be graduates through a suc- cessful and memorable chapter in their lives. Although graduation is often a hot and long ceremony, it proved to be once again an original with Lebanon ' s uniqueness in the Candelabrum lighting by the Honor Committee. Valedictorian Kerri Randel and Salutatorians Laura Lee and Janelle Walk- er gave speeches of hope and success to their classmates. Graduation from Lebanon High School is an all-important time, and the class of 1983 made its ceremony a special one. Top: Its finally here! Graduation! The best part of the prom for the juniors, besides the dance itself, was building it! The entire Armory was filled with jokes, laughter, hard work, and a feeling of unity between everyone. It was a hard and some- times tiresome job; but through all the run- ning around to ten different places to hunt the necessary materials and equipment, through putting decorations into place — only to fall down and to be re-strung, re- painted, or re-stapled — the juniors, at the end of a weary week, saw how proud they would be that important night. The prom would not have been possible without a courageous, dedicated, and hard- working lady who has the amazing capac- ity to tolerate ALMOST anything from the juniors during preprom time. Although Ja- nie Reynolds was close to a nervous break- down putting up with her committee work- ers that fateful week, the junior class with Janie ' s constant guidance accomplished a successful prom that made the Class of 1984 proud! Above Time Flies wl-ien you re having fun ' Right Sheryl. stop directing ' Reflections Of Sweet Memories The juniors worked extremely hard, making preparations for the 1983 Prom. They wanted this prom to be extra-special because of the realization that this impor- tant event holds everlasting memories. The theme Reflection of Sweet Memo- ries filled the Armory with pink balloons, shiny letters and pink and maroon and white crepe paper. A garden scene added to the mystical effect. The crowning of the 1983 Prom Queen, Valerie Caylor, highlighted the evening. Laura Lee, the 1982 recipient, gave the crown and roses to a tearful and happy new queen. Members of the court were Jessica Chesney, Colleen Feldt, Tracey Hawkins, Lisa Linton, Brenda Mansholt. and Anita Williams. The PostProm ended the evening ' s fes- tivities, with the playing of the carnival games and casino for Tiger Bucks. These Tiger Bucks were then used at the auction. Good food also was a major part of Post- Prom. The 1983 Prom was cited by students and faculty as a huge success. Congratula- tions Class of 1984! Monday was security day and all students were asked to be accompanied by their childhood security blankets, teddy bears, etc. Tuesday was college day and students all wore their best college jerseys. Wednesday was tshirt day and that evening the powder puff game was played in a hard fought contest won by sophomores and juniors. After the game, Lucien Perras was crowned Homelycoming queen and promised a super game in his victory speech. Thursday was movie day and students dressed as characters from their favorite movies. Seniors showed their dominating skills at the senior — faculty Softball game. Friday was black and gold day and classes ended early for the annual pep session and parade where the juniors took top for their Wizard of Oz float. Halftime festivities included the crowning of Brenda Mansholt as the 1983 Homecoming Queen. A post-Homecoming dance ended the festivities of the week marking yet another successful Homecoming. Candelabrum ;athy Barrick Committee: Mil man, Jeff Dicke rd, Erin Dulhanty. Joe Venezia, Colleen Feldt. Eddie Schilling. As the Class of 1984. we have suffered many successes and a few defeats. Like other classes before us, we spent our first year learning our way around the halls, when not to talk back to upperclassman, and finding our very own niche at LHS. During our sophomore year, we were given the opportunity to enroll in drivers education, and many of us receive our drivers license. We all enjoyed cruising the town on weekends. As juniors, we participated in the Candy Coke Committee and upgraded the quality of past proms with the Junior-Senior prom entitled Re- flections of Sweet Memories. As juniors, we also won the privilege of being named the winner of the Homecoming float. Coming into our senior year with mixed emo- tions, there remained numerous tasks that de- manded attention. We experienced the Senior Dinner Party, the fitting of caps and gowns, among many other activities. The people who led the seniors through many accomplishments were president, Mike Beard; vice president, Erin Dulhanty: secretary. Colleen Feldt; council members Joe Venezia and Eddie Schilling, and petitionable seats Beth Williams and Mandi Cline. The Candelabrum Committee performed its traditional ceremony for the first time at the Senior Dinner Party, Members are Mike Beard. Erin Dulhanty, Joe Venezia, Colleen Feidt, Eddie Schilling, Kathy Barrickman, Jeff Dickerson, Anita Williams. The Senior Dinner Party was a smashing success. The dinner was once again held at (Jlen Country Club, with more than 120 seniors, their sponsor Dan Charmichael, and guests attending. The guests were greeted at the door by council members and seated in assigned seats designated with personalized name cards. President Mike Beard greeted classmates and guests. Paula Owen gave the invocation and led the class in the Lord ' s Prayer. The Candelabrum Ceremony was then presented by the committee, Mike Beard, Erin Dulhanty, Colleen Feldt, Joe Venezia, Kathy Barrickman, Eddie Schilling. Jeff Dickerson and Anita Williams. Entertainment, following the roast beef dinner, consisted of the David Letterman Show skit, with Jeff Harris, Master of Ceremonies, pretending to be David Letterman. Eddie Schilling played his band conductor Paul . The entire entertainment evolved around the Letterman Show with guests including, Bob and Doug McKenzie portrayed by Joe Venezia and Gary Hedges. The Right Reverend, played by Jeff Schooler, brought the class to hysteria when he healed two corrupt persons, Jeff Dickerson and Steve Shure. The show also included an NBC tour, played by Paula Owen and Brent Ross. Following this, Laura Shaw and Charlene Lasley sang, If Only You Believe. Jessica Chesney and Ross sang Through the Years. The 20-year class reunion was a look into the future and what the people will be doing then. Returning students were Linton, Porter, Chesney, Pennington, [Newman, Kaiser, Colvin, Perras, Jones, Schooler, Feldt, Dulhanty, Caylor, and Shure. Closing performances were songs by the senior choir and Lasley. 1 f ' i y ' .-T o. The theme to this year ' s homecoming being Tigers Go to the Movies , Although this may seem like quite a large task for the juniors to accomplish, the main task of the junior class was to help in the financing of the senior prom of 1984. They did this by selling cokes, hot- dogs, and popcorn to the many fans at the basketball games, greeting everyone with a friendly Hi . Also with the help of their class sponsor, Janie Reynolds, who worked hard in getting the juniors prepared for such a time consuming task. With much excitement of becoming up- perclassmen, and getting to park in the senior parking lot, the juniors held out to make this year a success. Sophomores The sophomore class, led by Penny Pad gett, president; Julie Yoder, vice president; and Mary Lee, secretary had the duty of informing confused freshmen where their classes were, even though this sometimes ended in greater confusion than before. With Debbie Isenhower and Missy Staple- ton as petitionable seats, who helped offi- cers and had special duties at homecom- ing, the class couldn ' t have been more complete. They were very ecstatic with such privi- leges as getting their driver ' s licenses and waiting to go out to eat for lunch as ju- niors, that made the year even more long and grueling, but they pulled it off quite well. Doug and Mark going to powder thi - , Freshman Have you ever stopped to think about what it must be like for the freshmen to walk into the Lebanon High School on the first day and wonder, Well, my student handbook says that my class is this way, but what if 1 have it turned upside down? I know, I ' ll just ask that very nice looking young man over there , and then to find out that that very nice looking young man was really a sneaking, kniving young soph- omore or junior who wants nothing more than to make you look dumb or foolish. Or have you ever stopped to think about what must be going through a freshman ' s head as he fills out his schedule and looks at all the classes he can take? Or the clubs that he can now be in? Or even the sports that he can now participate in? The freshman class was headed by Andy Franklin, president; Nikki Surber, vice president; and Brandy Bunting secre- tary, who along with Amy Kincaid and Kris Belknap as petitionable seats, helped the freshmen, not only finding the classes, but also choosing the classes, clubs, and, sports that they could participate in. Although they learned that the Middle School was just a part of the past, they also made many new friends and anticipat ed finally becoming upperclassmen. Evan BELOW RIGHT: Scott and Eddie are pleased with their performance BELOW LEFT: Scott and Greg wind down after an exciting game Coach Rosenstihl: 500th Success Rosensthil started his coaching career in the fall of 1952 at Center Grove High School where he coached three years, win ning 24 and losing 36. Then he moved back home to Zionsville where he played high school basketball before moving to Butler University to get his degree. At Zionsville, he spent six years and the ea- gles won 103 and lost 43. At Zionsville. his eagles won three sectionals. From Zions- ville, he moved to Bluffton where he coached two years and the Bluffton team won 36 and lost 13. In the spring of 1962, Lebanon was look- ing for a new basketball coach and the late Butch Neuman, then the principal of LHS, tabbed Rosenstihl as the coach even before Rosenstihl knew it. Neuman talked Rosen stihl into staying at Lebanon. Rosie has been coaching LHS since the fall of 1962 and this is his 22nd year as the Man in charge of the LHS tigers. At Lebanon, Rosie has won 13 sectional titles, six regional crowns and one semi-final title. The only time the Rosenstihl ' s tigers have appeared in the Final Four was in 1975. According to coach Rosenstihl, he has many fine athletes to thank for all the games he has won and to name them would fill a book. The night of the hopeful 500th win, three television stations, two radio stations and four newspapers, plus many sports figures, including several of coach Jim Ro- senstihl ' s former athletes were gathered in the LHS goal hall to watch the Lebanon Tigers win their fifth straight basketball game but more important was the winning of Tiger coach Rosenstihl ' s 500th basket- ball game. Afterwards, coach was the cen- ter of attraction, being interviewed by all the television stations and the radio plus the press and being given awards by IH- SAA commissioner Gene Cato, Lebanon High School and many others for the fam- ous number 500 basketball victories. The Math Department has made quite a few changes over the last year The computer classes were expanded to meet the popular demand of the students. Because of this demand, Mr. Dave Stephens, who usually never strays away from the business department, taught three computer classes this year. Mr. Ste- phens was not the only one who strayed a bit, Mr. James Bogan taught two math courses this year also. The big personal change in the Math Department this year was Mrs, Debbie Heck, who replaced Mrs. Gwen Hopkins. The courses taught in Math start with Algebra and go all the way up to analytic geometry. In today ' s world of growing technol- ogy these math skills which you learn now will become very important. Many of our teachers feel that there is still not enough math taught because there is not enough time in the day. ) SI Debbie Heck Larry Zickn English Department This is a classroom not a photography studi( The English department took on some changes this year. Mrs. Sally Tanselle joined the staff and Mrs. Nancy Servies became the communi- cations teacher. The academic concerns of the English Department are basically the areas of grammar, vocabulary, spell- ing and literature. Several specific goals were set by the English teachers. They emphasized the im portance of composing thoughts and organizing ideas. Students studied such topics as writing techniques, paragraph development and the writ- ing of research papers. Reading is something which stu- dents are not always enthusiastic about, although the English teachers do their best to make all the short- stories and novels as exciting as pos- sible. English is essential for those sen- iors who are planning to attend col- lege. Seniors prepare themselves for the future by increasing their knowl- edge in the field of English. The Business Department offers a variety of courses for those students interested in finding employment in the field of business after finishing their high school education. The Business Depart- ment strove to train the students efficiently. Banking procedures and expenditure records were stressed upon bookkeepers, as well as the fundamentals of neatness, accounting, accuracy and businesslike manners. Dictation and the structures of words were introduced to ste- nography students. Future secretaries were trained in typing skills and shorthand. Typists learned models of business arms and how to type with speed. On the job training, provided by COE, was offered to interested students. This co-op program has proven worthwhile to both the students and the employers. It takes an abundance of extra time and hard work to succeed. At one time or another we have all had to stay after hours. To the wrestler running more and more miles, to the swimmer who keeps on stroking after his muscles ache, to the guard group who stays after school to practice and comes in on Saturdays. Also, to the teacher who plans better and better material for the students, to the football player who lifts weights everyday even after the season has ended, to the long-distance runner who prepares all summer for a meet, to the chemistry student who studies forever for an exam, to the principal who works late on Sundays, to the band director who spends hours to prepare a field show — you are a special type of person who cares to be a success and has the something extra to make yourself better and represent LHS with pride and enthusiasm. Our school is a success because of the people. Without the extra work school would just be another building to walk into, do what is required, and leave. Success in high school does not have to end when you leave the place of learning. It has only just begun! .iMm ' Boosters Dorie Bob Langjahr D.W. This yearbook was produced to keep In mind the enjoyable, memorable and excit Ing events of this past school year. Uniting the artistic talents, creative writing skills and underwater photography of the Edi tors and two staff photographers, we hope the collection of memories brings laughter as you turn the pages. Thus touching some aspect of your high school exper- iences. The combined efforts took long hours and hard work to meet deadlines, but the never-ending work done by the staff paid off. Many people need to be thanked for their help in guidance, dedica- tion, words of wisdom , and overall sup- port! These people r re, Dick Maurer, Jos- ten ' s Yearbook Advisor and T-shirt sales- man, Dave Orr, for the $22 picture, Jim Maines, for taking the Senior Class photo, letting us use his camera, making the Sen- ior Signature Page possible and giving us printing assistance. Bill Cripe our overall photographer did a fine job on Senior Por traits. The understudies helped, but at first they did not understand the necessity of their jobs. As time went by they got the idea. Good Luck and best wishes on the 1985 Cedars!! Each editor will always ap- preciate our sponsor Jeannie Martin ' s Love and Kisses and value her patience, understanding and friendship. When dead- line days were creeping up there were times when I thought nothing would get done She was there to assure me LHS would get a Cedars. I would especially like to thank the editors. Although we worked hard we had fun sharing friendships and good times — this is priceless to me Being the Editor in-chief is the most important accomplishment of my LHS career. When the staff attended Yearbook Camp at Hanover College we tried to think of a theme that represented LHS, with the help of Mrs. Martin, we came up with SUC- CESS. Paula Breedlove had the idea of use- ing the Road. Finally the book became The Road To Success, meaning that you are now beginning the road at LHS and can continue throughout your life to be a SUC CESS! yui f Editor-in Chief: Erin Dulhanty Managing Editor: Joe Venezia Senior Editor: Patty Klooz Organizations Editor: Michelle Hie Underclass Editor: Lisa Stevens Faculty Editor: Jeff Harris Advertising Editor: Paula Breedio ' Sports Editor: Lianne Mitchell Subscriptions Editor: Karia Sh burne Subscriptions Assistant Editor: C dy Plass Photographers: Kevin Marshall, Gr Colvin •J- .-e .
