We did agree, however, that it would be fitting and proper that we show recognition in some way to all of our friends and school patrons. To you, the readers of this book, we sincerely and respect- fully dedicate the 1950 edition of THE CEDARS. Page Six 1950 Cedars Prom Octette Umbrellas, flowers, pastel colors and green grass set the scene for the 1949 J unior-Senior Prom held on April 22 at the Lebanon Armory. Rain on the outside did not dampen the spirits of those attending the well-named April Showers Prom. Using April Showers for their theme song these nine Juniors entertained with a number of songs and illustrative skits pertaining to rain, silver linings, rainbows and rivers. From left to right they are: Jack Trowbridge, Frank Barrett, Helen Ruth Isenhour, Mary Frances McKenzie, Charlotte Korteling, Marcia Miller, Richard Nichols, David Richey, and the Master of Ceremonies, Robert Shanks. A tribute to the graduating seniors from the Class of '50 closed the program for the 1949 Prom. The tribute follows: Dear Seniors: This will be our last big event with you. In a few weeks you will be alumni. But before you have to go into the world to seek your fortunes and careers, let Johnny Junior tell you he'll miss you. We will have to be good next year to be as good as you. We will miss you in the halls, we will miss you in the gym, we will miss you at next year's prom. But knowing that all good things must come to an end, we of the class of 1950 send you into the world wishing you good luckf, and if April Showers ever do come your way we hope you find the Blue Bird. Signed: THE JUNIOR CLASS. 1950 Cedars Page Seven Basketball Season Tickets Although there wasn't the usual long Wait in home rooms, the same anxious spirit for the basketball season appeared as the season tickets Went on sale for the 1949-50 season. Page Eight 1950 Cedars Senior Dinner Party Marked up as strictly a Senior Class celebration was the A'Green Yearsl' dinner party Cpictured at the leftj held at the Methodist Church on October 21. The usual Candelabrum Ceremony was conducted besides speeches, a boys' singing group, a cornet solo, a girls, octet and group singing. This engraved an important page on our book of high sehool memories. Vespers Service One of our most beautiful and impressive convocations is the annual Vespers Service held prior to Thanksgiving vacation. The service is made possible by members of the Senior Sunshine Society, Hi-Y Club, three readers from the Dramatics Department, the glee club and members of the band. The Thanksgiving Day observation is under the direction of Mrs. Jane Ward. Mr. DeBard and Le-banon's first orchestra in many years made their initial appearance on the Vespers program. 1950 Cedars Page Nine O C 9 O D O Page Ten 1950 Cedars O 0 0 O O O Christmas Plays Christmas Windowsy' closed the school Christmas festivities before vacation. It is the old story of the Christ child coming to earth to find refuge from the winter Weather in a home where love rules. The Glee Club furnished music between sets ani Lebanon's new orchestra played before and after the plays. Left to right: Ben Campbell, Jim McAfee, Dave Richey, Jon Kneip, Tom Hopkins, Miss Beckett, Raymond Barton, Charles Rader, Bob Warren. Christmas Tree Around Christmas a beautifully decorated tree can be seen in the lower hall of the Senior High building. These decorations can be credited to Miss Beckett and her Solid Geometry Class who construct most of the ornaments out of a single piece of paper. 1950 Cedars Page Eleven Middle picture: Flanking Miss Arnsman are outstanding sophomores Leah Hiland and Clifford Antcliff. Bottom picture: Standing on either side of Mrs. Stephenson are outstanding freshmen Ruth Crim and Jimmy Parr. Page Twelve imma HONORS DAY Honors Day, which was es- tablished approximately twenty-two years ago in Leb- anon, is the time when all efforts and achievements of the scho ol year are j u s t l y and formally given recognition by awards. Every student has an equal chance for an award of some kind for awards are given in almost every department, club, and class. Special awards are given to those who have con- tributed a little more than re- quired to make Lebanon a school of the highest standard. Those who demonstrate the finest traits of character and courtesy, co-operation and re- sponsibility are also honored at this time. Extra opportuni- ties for awards are provided through tests, tournaments and contests given by the school and through outside organiza- tions. Honors Day makes all sac- rificed time and effort seem a little more worthwhileg only those who put forth the effort may receive the satisfactions and benefits to be derived therefrom. 1950 Cedars ' COLLEGE DAY College Day was established two years ago in Lebanon High School to aid the upper- classmen in choosing a college or university for further training. It also gives an opportunity to those who have already picked a college to attend to be informed more fully on the cost, requirements, courses offered, activities, and living accommodations of that particular insti- tution. Representatives from every Indiana college for whizh interest is shown by LHS juniors and seniors come to Lebanon for this program. Individual college groups are formed and in an informal, friendly discussion our students get a fine understanding about the college of their choice. 1950 Cedars P 1199 Thiffeen May Fest Activities Prior to the May Fest celebration, four grade school Cub and Brownie scouts performed the cus- tamary flag raising cere- many used before all school activities. The scouts were Helen Byroad, David Neu- man, James Shirk, and Mel- ba Caldwell. All grades from the Hrst through the sixth from every city grade school took part in the celebration. Here one of the grades turns a nursery rhyme into a dance. Older grade school stu- dents performed calisthen- ics and gymnastics learned in Physical Education classes. Some Junior High and Senior High Physical Education classes also dem- onstrated their abilities in tumbling, wrestling, volley- ball, and basketball. Page Fourteen 1950 Cedars May Queen and Court May Queen, Annabelle Miller reigned over the 1949 May Fest along with her court including Janet Hawkins, Ann Hiatt, Mina Baker, Nancy Dillon, Peggy Lindley and Carol Green. May would not be complete without the traditional May Pole dance performed by the freshman girls to close the annual festivi- ties. May Pole Dance 1950 Cedars Page Fifteen WHERE THE CROSS IS MADE Players in this scene are Dick Nichols and Thelma Staton. THE TRYSTING PLACE Here you see Charlotte McClaine, Bob Robison, Bob Warren, and Patsy Newman. Drarhatics Ordinary dramatic students became stars after the January productions of Where the Cross is Madei' and The Trysting Place directed by Mrs. Jane Ward. Many of the actual workers go unrecognized by the audience because they are backstage, but wherever they are or whatever they are doing, it all adds up to a good year for the Dramatics Department. Page Sixteen 1950 Cedars Central Indiana Oratorical Winners L. H. S. entrants in the Central Indiana Oratori- cal Contest were Charlene Kintaid, who won first place in the gir1's division, and David Richey, who entered the boy's division. Other contesting schools were Crawfordsville, Jefferson of Lafayette, West Lafayette, Delphi, and Frankfort, Where this year's contest was held. 1950 Cedars Page Seventeen PrincipaI's Office Page Eighteen 1950 Cedars jim Ulm Hrublwl Vacation time? Not at all. Students of LHS are very familiar with an entirely opposite picture. The scene on the opposite page is rather an un- familiar one for it is seldom that the principal's office isn't buzzing with activity. Students and faculty members make this part of the building one of the busier sections during a normal school day. This office, however, is but one area in which administrative functions are performed. The school is for the students but it could not exist without the guidance and work put forth by our school board of education, superintendent, principals, dean of girls, and the teachers in every department. Through their efforts we acquire knowledge from which wevbenefit. Our faculty goes to school, too. Several LHS teachers have spent their Summer months and winter evenings attending colleges and universities very recently to further their training and to obtain advanced degrees. On the following pages are pictures of our administration and faculty and a listing of their assigned teaching duties and extra-curricular activities. 1950 Cedars Page N meteen SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Superintendent of the Lebanon city schools is the main duty of Mr. Thomas L. Christian. Other minor responsibilities of this busy man are being in charge of school records and the sale of textbooks. BOARD OF EDUCATION Members of the school board of education are Mr. W. H. Parr, Jr., Mr. Harry Harlow, and Mr. Clyde Perkins. CLERKS Important clerical work for the principal and superintendent is done by Miss Hazel Shahan, Miss Lois Hiland, and Mrs. Christina Bush. Page Twenty 1950 Cedars O O O O O Mr. Paul W. Neuman, principal, is one of the main Uspokesi' in the 'trunning wheel of Lebanon High School. He not only runs his office but is a friendly advisor to all stu- dents. Mrs. Stephenson, Assistant Prin- cipal, keeps the Junior High School in smooth running order. She also is in charge of the testing program. Miss Betty Arnsman, Dean of Girls, assists and advises, besides ' keeping the books for the Senior High School. 1950 Cedaf'-9 Page Twenty-one MR. Page Twenty-four 1950 Cedars 5 In this next section you will see scenes of some of the many classes that fellow students and I attended. We LHS students think we are pretty lucky that so many varied curricular opportunities are made available to us. Here we have a chance to enlarge upon our individual interests in the Way of sub- ject matter. We have our theory courses and we have our skill and vocational courses. The care taken by our administration and faculty in choosing and teaching these courses may be one of the important reasons Why We have such a low percentage of drop-outs by our student population when that important age of sixteen years is reached. The scene on the opposite page is familiar to all students of Mr. Neeves. Mr. Neeves, however, is doing what several of our teachers do after school is out in the afternoon-getting ready for the next day's classes. Now let's look at some of thcse classes that made my year at LHS so pleas- ant and educational .... 1950 Cedars Page Twenty five Page Twenty-six K nm, Manual Arts Department Manual arts students are the fu- ture mechanics, carpenters, electri- cians, and general handy men. They keep our building in good shape with their almost professional repairing jobs. Home Economics It isn't easy concentrating on les- sons while the foods classes send tantalizing aromas through the halls. Practical application will make these girls ready for the future in homes and business. Not only are these girls being educated but they lend a hand to the lunch-room with some of their finished products. 1950 Cedars Vocational Agriculture A newly opened field this year in Lebanon High School is the Voca- tional Agriculture Department. This is a practical study of all phases of Agriculture. Guidance Valuable assistance is offered by the Guidance and testing depart- ment for the selecting of careers. These tests are given to Freshmen and Seniors for help in selecting a plane of study and a vocation. 1950 Cedars Page Twenty seven Art Department Paintings on the windows around Christmas time are done by the Art Department as a part of their work during the year. These artists work with water colors, oil paints, leather and metal. Instrumental Music Department Harrnonious notes can be heard from under the gym as the Senior Band practices for a ball game or a program. Mr. Lester DeBard, direc- tor, is their most valuable critic. Page Twenty ezght 1950 Cedars Spanish Department Preparing for travel to our south- ern neighboring countries are these Spanish students. They learn the language, study the customs of the Spanish speaking people and read about their dress and homes. Latin Department Latin may be a dead language to some people, but not to these enter- prising Latin I students who make Mrs. Sumpter's class quite lively with the old Roman language. 1950 Cedars Page Twenty nme Page Thirty English Department What is a participle? Just ask any student of this English department where not only sentence construc- tion is studied but our every day conversation is smoothed out. Speech Department Gestures are important in express- ing yourself in a speech. They must also be prepared just like the ma- terial in a speech. Mrs. Jane Ward coaches these fluently speaking ora- tors. Here you learn pronunciation, enunciating, and articulation. 1950 Cedars Social Studies Department Class panels are frequent in the studying schedule of Mr. Neeves. Besides the required history Leb- anon High School offers the study of Social Problems and Economics. Commercial Department What have we here? Just a little finger exercises before 55 minutes of strenuous typing. Other courses in the Commercial department are Shorthand, Bookkeeping, Secretarial Training, Salesmanship, and Gen- cral Business. 1950 Cedars Page Thirty one Page Thirty-tivo li. Science Department Mix a dash of this and a pinch of th:.t and hope it doesn't blow up. No, this isn't the usual procedure of the Science department. Here they learn first what can be combined and then combine it for scientific tests. Mathematics Department Mr. Jewell Kincaid questions one of his mathematicians who is study- ing General Mathematics. Other courses offered are Algebra, Plane Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Solid Geometry, Trigonometry and Senior Mathematics. 1950 Cedars Girls' .Physical Education For healthier American girls Leb- anon gives us the Physical Educa- tion classes. Newcomb was a game newly introduced to the girls this year by Miss Leyman. Other favor- ite sports were soccer, volleyball, basketball, and softball. Boys' Physical Education The boys in this physical educa- tion class are building strong bodies and enjoying themselves at the same time. The boys do calisthenics and participate in several sports in proper seasons. The desire to excel in the physical education program was high this year as teams were formed in each class and competition was keen throughout the year regardless of the sports activity under way. ?i5. ,, 45214 F Slew- T 'E 1950 Cedars Page Thirty-three Looking Back Page Thirty-four 1950 Cedars Custodians Mr. Alva Hudson, Mr. William Watson, and Mr. William Hudson. Memory Snaps Remember when?'?? .... Although the pictures on the opposite page are not part of school they are either members of the student body a few years ago or students enjoying their vacation time. Do you recognize the three seniors in the upper left-hand corner, or the national contest winner in the upper right-hand corner? During the summer a large percentage of LHS students spent most of their time at the pool or loafing around uptown. Vacations during school gave time for parties, more loafing and slumber parties. Coming back to school memories, the three men on this page will never be forgotten for they are our custodians and friends of long standing, Alva, :'S1im , and Bill. 1950 Cedars Page Thwty five 4 im 'ZR ina' Khm- Characterizations! Page Thirty-six 1950 Cedars On the following pages are our honor winners, honorary organizations, and departmental clubs. All of these add to the making of citizens out of LHS students besides giving them opportunities to take initiative and the assump- tion of responsibilities. You can plainly see from the size of the clubs that LHS students like to belong , that organizations are important in our school society. Below are the five members of the graduating class who attended Hoosier Boys' and Girls' State. They were selected by their classmates and faculty on the basis of interest in government, moral character and scholarship. Reading from left to right: Marcia Miller, Bob Shanks, Mary F. Bob won from over one million contestants throughout the nation with his five-minute radio script on Democracy. In his script Bob portrayed Richard Brown, a dead war veteran who returned to tell what democracy had meant to him. As a result of this winning script Bob received a S500 scholarship and a trip to Washington where he met President Truman, cabinet cliicers, members of Congress, and other high ranking officials. Prior to this contest Bob had won many other speech contests. Among them were the American Legion District Contest, the Central Indiana Oratorical Contest, the Lebanon Inter-Class Oratorical Contest, and the State Rotary Contest. A forgotten sport of the past since its discontinuance in 1933, football will round out a complete athletic program for the coming school year. Much of the credit for getting football returned to LHS goes to Athletic Director Forest G. Witsrnan. Definitely not to be overlooked are the earnest efforts of the administration, the school board of education, and the community. The 1950 football squad will be guided by Alvin Crawford, who will join the LHS faculty next fall. The Tiger baseball team has a well-rounded fall and spring schedule, the thinly-clads are starting their fourth year of trackg and the junior high athletic program has been greatly expanded by fall, winter and spring intra-mural and inter-school contests. From an athletic viewpoint, Lebanon High School is once again taking her place with other schools of comparable size. Athletic Board of Control Student representation in the field of athletics isn't confined merely to actual participa- tion in sports of their respectve choices. Below you see the student representatives and faculty members of the Athletic Board of Control. This board controls the prices of season basketball tickets, handles the awarding of honor letters, and promotes all branches of athletics in LHS. The board consists of a president, a vice-president, a secretary-treasurer, two boy representatives, two girl representatives and eight faculty members, , Seated left to right: Gary French, David Richey, pres.g Marlon Scott, vice-pres., Mr. Neuman, Mr. Christiang Mary Frances McKenzie, sec'y-treas.g Marilyn Walkerg Phyllis Acton, and Dave McGhee. They were always on the job cheer- ing the future Tigers onward. Ann Spurr, Jane Wiseheart, and Shirley Chaille compose the trio. Managers The six people pictured at the left represent the workh:mrses of the aihlefic department. They begin long before the games begin and are tlze last ones to leave after the gmes. Senior High Cheer Leaders At no time during the year did you see Lebanon's cheering section or its sportsmanship lacking. This was due to the combined efforts of three of the most energetic, yet thoughtful, cheer leaders Lebanon has ever had, namely: Dick Nichols, Phyllis Acton, and Bob Amos. Page Sixty 1950 Cedars The fighting Tigers of 1949-50 gave high hopes of a very successful season with an impressive beginning of five straight wins. The Tigers, after subduing a stubborn Lapel five Cminus any overtime which they have needed the past three yearslb went on to rack up victories over Delphi, Lafayette Jeff, Crawfordsville, and Washington East Chicago, before being stopped by a red-hot Frankfort team. The last half of the year didn't prove as profitable, but they wound up the season on a high note by thumping a good Sheridan team Cone of 1950's Sweet Sixte-en j, 52-42. In sectional tourney play, Lebanon won their first game against Pinnell 58-28 and then lost their second try when they were defeated by Whitestown 52-43. Whitestown in turn lost the championship game to Zionsville by a score of 38- 34, thus sending Zionsville to the regionals for the second consecutive year. In the group pictures already passed our relatives may not have been able to recog- nize us among all our friends as one of their own clan, but they are sure to recognize us here. Lebanon High School is proud to have each one of us as a part of this growing school. The second semester enrollment totaled 622 for both the Junior and Senior High. The Junior High enrollment, seventh and eighth grades totaled 235. Classes are not organized until the Junior and Senior year which accounts for the lack of class parties in lower grades. 1950 Cedars Page Sixty-seven Senior Class History i Well, as it happens to every class, we, the Class of 1950, enrolled in school September 1, 1950, as seniors, and gradua- tion, always before a remote event, loomed not far before us. One of the reasons we were sad as we walked across the stage to get our diplomas, was that we had had such a lot of fun as upperclassmen. Let's look way back to the fall of 1948 when we as last trotted down to the gym to elect our class ofiicers for the first time in our high school career. We chose as our leaders Torn Honan, president, Dick Nichols as his right-hand man, and Faedetta Maple to make our financial reports and keep all re cords of our class meetings. We chose as sponsors Miss Ruth McLaughlin and Mr. Frank Griesemer. The sponsors and class oiiicers selected 10 girls and 5 boys to sell cokes and candy at the ball games from which we made the money we needed for our later social activities. N On April 22, 1949, we gave the Junior-Senior Prom in honor of the Seniors of '49. The theme of the prom was April Showersi' and the weather proved just line for the theme! Regardless of the rain we voted our prom to be the best of all proms in the history of LHS! Faedetta Maple was crowned queen of this gala event, with a court of six girls. Then came the final year at LHS. Having been completely satisfied with the previous year's officers we chose the same ones to lead us again. This year we elected Miss Eileen Beckett and Mr. Glenn Maple as our faculty advisors. On October 21, we held our Senior Dinner Party, the theme of which was The Green Years representing the experiences we had had in obtaining our education. Finally came Baccalaureate, Senior Class Night, and Commencement. On May 25 we ended our high school days and started out into the world as Lebanon High School alumni. 1 Senior class oiiicers and spon- sors L-R, Dick Nichols, Vice ett, Faedetta Maple, Secretary- I Presidentg Mr. Maple, Miss Beck- Treasurerg Tom Honan, President. Page Seventy-seven Ofificers and sponsors of the Junior class are: Mr. Kincaid, Helen Isen- hower, Secretary-Treasurer, Clifford Antcliif, President, Leah Fern Hil- and, Vice President, Mr. Davies. Junior Class History As upperclassmen for the first time the Juniors elected their Hrst class officers. They chose Clifford Antcliff as president, Leah Fern Hiland, vice-president, and Helen Jean Isenhower as secretary-treasurer. Their sponsors were Mr. Will R. Davies and Mr. Jewell Kincaid. As in the past the Juniors sold candy and cokes at the ball games as their project for raising funds to carry on their future class activities. Their candy-coke committee brightened up the ball games with the outfits they chose to wear which were for the girls grey corduroy skirts and yellow, short-sleeve sweaters, and for the boys grey corduroy trousers, and yellow, long-sleeve turtle-neck T-shirts. On April 14, the Junior class gave the annual prom in honor of the graduating Seniors.
