On the following pages you will see brief glimpses of various curricular offerings here at L.H.S. Nearly every student can discover or broaden his -interest in at least one of these fields. Cedays Pdgg Seven ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY On the left you see Mr. Neeves' Economic Geograf phy class. The lads you see are learning of the experif ences of a poor cocoa bean or maybe why the earth is round! ALCOHOL AND NARCOTICS Shocked? Well, you needn't be. This is the Alf cohol and Narcotics class. It is a new subject offered this year to help students better understand the use and effects of alcohol and narcotics on the body. Page Eight 1949 Cedars ART Did you see that dar' ling bracelet Sue had on? Ycsl She made it in art class. This may sound strange to you, hut bracelets were only one of t h e m a n y things made in Mrs. Hiner's art cl a s s e s They also did other metal work, oil paint' ings, leather Works, stencils, and water col' oring. JUNIOR BAND The crash' ing cymbals and beating drums remind you every day that the Junior Band is prac' ticing. These 7th and 8th graders are un' der the careful direction of Mr. Lester Def Bard. 1949 Cedars page Nm: SOCIAL STUDIES Miss Witt's History 4 class is seen learning their early European History. just ask any of them who the Neanderthal Man was. They should be able to tell you! In the Social Studies Def partment, we also study American History, and American Government. SPANISH Como esta usted? This may look like Greek to you, but to Mr. Boggy's Spanish classes it is simply 'LHOW are you? These students not only study the language of our neighbors, but also their customs, clothing, and homes. Page Tm 1949 Cedars SPEECH Everything from elof quent oratory to heated debate poured forth from these future Daniel Websters in the Speech Department this year. These students were under the coaching of Mrs. Jane Ward. SCIENCE Did you know that the earthvvorm is a very com' plex invertebrate? This is a very serious question to most of these biology students who have stud' ied in detail about this and many other forms of biological life in their science classes. 1949 Cedars page Eleven MATHEMATICS What is the shortest dis' tance between two points? This is one of the many things that tax the wits of these ujunior Einsteins in Miss Beckett's Geometry classes. They also learn many more diflicult prob' lems as they progress into the Advanced Algebra, Plane Geometry, Solid Ge' ometry, Trigonometry, and Senior Mathematics courses. COMMERCE These future business men and women slaved away each day in bookkeepf ing class trying to learn the difference between their as' sets and liabilities, and how to improve their capital! If they so desire, they may broaden their knowledge of the business world by enf rolling in the typing, shortf hand and general business classes also. Page Twelve 1949 Cedars MANUAL ART The buzzing saws and the pounding hammers are our main clues that the wood' shop is busily working every day. This year they have been doing extra repair jobs in L.H.S., besides their reg' ular projects. One of these L'extras was the building of tvventyffour new typing desks for the typing room. DOMESTIC SCIENCE Some of the snappiest dressers at L.H.S. could easf ily be found in 3. clothing class one hour of the day. The girls this year made blouses, dresses, pajamas, and even suits. They find their clothing course is not only educational but very practical! 1949 Cedars Page Tlwff-'fm VISUAL EDUCA- TION With the help of vis' ual educaf tion, learning is now be' coming more interesting here at L. H. S. Movies of all kinds were shown this year by the Student Op' erators who were under the direction of Mr. Da' vies. For several years our school has made it possible for any Bernhardts and Barrymores who have inner yearnings for grease paint and footlights to express them in the Dramatics Department. There they have an opportunity to not only study the theatre and the drama, but to actually take part in play productions. Here you see rehearsal for the onefact play Wampum , which was presented in the unique Round Theatre style along with 'LThe Valiant , another onefact play, for the Departments January productions. Page Fovtyffowr 1949 Cedars BY OUR ACTIONS Realizing the importance of sports in a high school, L.I'l.S. has always tried to maintain a program that would appeal to all those interested in the major branches of sports. In attempting to create and maintain a wellfrounded sports program, our athletic supervisor, Mr. Forest Witsman, and his assistants, Mr. William Heath, Mr. Fred Adam. and Mrs. Phyllis Barrowclilf, in conjunction with Mr. Paul Neuman, principal, the Athletic Board of Control, and the School Board of Education, have been bringing more and more sports and athletics into L.H.S. Two years ago, track was added to our already established baseball and basketball, to make a more diversified program. In addition to this, our baseball schedule has been broadened by our team's having competed in a newly' formed county baseball league in the fall. Here you see six of the most important people in our athletic activities. Cn the left are the student managers, the boys that L'Keep 'em fighting. Beginning with an overtime victory over Lapel and ending with a thrilling but stunning last 4fsecond defeat by Zionsville in the Sectional Tourney Finals, Lebanon's Fighting Tigers had one of their best winfloss basketball records of recent years. Highlighted by victories over Lafayette .IeiIerson's 1948 defending state champs and the Anderson Indians, the number one choice for the '49 title, Lebanon won 12 and lost 6 scheduled games, 2 Holiday Tourney games and 2 out of 3 Sectional games for a nnal record of 16 victories and 7 defeats. Playing a rough, hardffighting Whitestown team in the Sectional Semiffinals, Lebanon won a costly victory, for in that game Bob Cook was injured and his services lost for the title game. In the hnale, Lebanon led from 1 to 5 points throughout the game, but in the final few seconds saw their lead cut to one point. With exactly 4 seconds to go, Heckman of Zionsville fired a desperate onefhand heave which banked in beautifully fand heart' breakingly for Lebanonlj giving Zionsville the title with a 41f40 score. 1948-1949 SEASON RECORD CINCLUDING TOURNAMENTSJ 16 WON, 7 LOST S7 LEBANON Lapel fovertimej LEBANON Cathedral 52 LEBANON Delphi LEBANON Crawfordsville 43 LEBANON Lafayette Jefferson LEBANON Shortridge 41 Lebanon HAMMOND TECH LEBANON Rossville 47 LEBANON Crawfordsville LEBANON Monticello 43 Lebanon FRANKFORT fovertimej LEBANON Sheridan 47 LEBANON Anderson Holiday Tourney 39 Lebanon WASHINGTON LEBANON 19 Noblesville E. The members of Miss Beckett's Solid Geometry Class proudly display each year their accomplishments of fine construction by decorating a huge tree with brightly painted solids as ornaments. This year was no exception and the entire student body enjoyed the colorful tree and marveled at the many intricate designs displayed. For five years, the classes made their ornaments scientifically constructed with only a straight edge and compass out of a single strip of paper. Page Fifty-six 1949 Cedars TI-IE CHRISTMAS GUEST The conclusion of our 1948 activities before our Christmas and New Year holidays was the presentation of our annual Christmas play. It was The Christmas Guest , the theme of which is an old legend that the Christ Child or the Christmas angel appears in homes in the guise of a beggar. The story was medieval in form and setting with an epilogue and prologue in poetry form recited by the Spirit of Yule. A poem, What Makes a Christmas, was given by Erin Whitney preceding the play. The Concert Choir and the Junior High Glee Club sang interludes of music to accentuate the power and beauty of the Christmas story read by Charlene Kincaid. Members of the cast from left to right: E. Lois Winkler, Beverly Cory, Martha Baird, Willa Ann Wal' ton, Alice Reese, and Donna Wolgast. Since there were no class oilicers or class parties, we spent our Freshman and Sophomore years looking forward to the time when we would be upperfclassmen. At last the day came when we were no longer underfclassmen but were fullffledged Juniors, and we chose as president Don Wolgast with Leon Colgrove and Marcia Edwards as his assistants. To lend them support Miss Lillian Witt and Mr. Dale Boggy were elected as sponsors. Our class was the first Junior class to sell concessions at the basketball games as a moneyfraising prof ject. Also, we sponsored a Junior Mixer to raise funds for the annual prom. The theme of the mixer was Snow Carnival. To carry out the theme, Ruth Dillon was chosen Snow Queen and Herb McRoberts, Snow King. Then came the big event of our school life, the one to which we had all been looking forward-The JuniorfSenior Prom. The Prom was held on April Z3 at the Lebanon Armory. The theme Gold Rush of '49 was predominate throughout the program and in the decorations. Sophomore girls, dressed in bright yellow broomstick skirts and white blouses, served the refreshments. To reign as queen, we chose Lois Jeanne McRoberts. After a busy Junior year we became Seniors at last. Don Wolgast was again chosen to lead our class and Charles Kersey and Lois Jeanne McRoberts were chosen to assist him. Our sponsors were Miss Patricia O'Day and Mr. Glenn Neeves. On October 20, we held our Senior Dinner Party. The theme of the banquet was Dreamland Before we knew it, Senior Class Night, Baccalaureate and Commencement were just around the corner. On May 26, we donned our caps and gowns and proudly walked across the stage to receive our diplomas. However, they got off to a good start this year by electing Tom Honan, president, Dick Nichols, vicefpresidentg and Faedetta Maple, sedyftreasurer. Their able sponf sors were Miss Ruth McLaughlin and Mid Frank Griesemer. The Juniors sold concessions at the basketball games as their class project. The girls wore red corduroy skirts and white blouses, while the boys wore gray trousers, white shirts, and red ties. Members of the class of '50 brought the idea of student government before the student body in a special convocation.
