On Monday, December 2, 'l957, Lew Elverson, head coach of Swarthmore College, spoke to the L.C.H.S. football team at the annual banquet at the Lebanon Country Club. One of the phrases he coined read thusly: Football is 80 percent fight, 20 percent ability. Mr. Everson possibly didn't realize that his coined expres- sion applied almost directly to the fighting Beaver squad, but anything else he might have said or done would not have fit the Beavers' brand of ball any better. The Beavers were outmanned, outweighed, and out- sized by every ball club on their schedule. They spotted some clubs 'l5 to 20 pounds per man. Their record: 5 wins, 2 losses, 'l tie. They defeated two clubs that went on to win their conference title, teams which outweighed them by approximately 'IO pounds per man. How was this possible? Eighty percent fight, twenty percent ability. How else could it be possible? The Beavers were indeed a fighting ball club. They fought through football camp, through pre-season scrim- mages, and through every game on their schedule. Nary a person who witnessed the Beavers in ANY of their games, even the losses, could honestly deny this fighting club anything but the greatest of praise. One sentence from the Lebanon Daily News sums this praise in a nut- shell: Beavers Bow to Delone after a gallant fight. I 0 'L ' 'sf The Beavers were guided through their successful season by these capable ca-captains: Fred Frattaroli and Joe Hinks. However, the Beavers didn't show any of the zip which had given them a big victory over Whitehall the previous week. The Eagles literally ran rough- shod over our heroes by virtue of a brilliant backfield, which ran through the Beaver defense like Sherman marched through Georgia, leaving devastation and ruin at every position, and an airtight line, which held the Beavers to a few skimpy yards on the ground. Three TD's in the final two quarters proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back as far as the Beavers were concerned, and they were only too happy to get off the field for the safety of the dressing room when the final gun sounded. Watch it, boys, I'm rough, growl: Joey, The Jet , but Cumberland Valley's defense dOGSll'l SCBII1 to GOTO. L.C.H.S., 33-Bishop Kenriclc, 6 The Beavers' potent offense rang out 412 yards on the ground, with Pete, Bentz, and Sciotti playing great offensive bellweathers, to break a three year home game winning streak at the Norristown field. Sciotti played a great all-around game and led the Beavers in scoring with two TD's while four seniors, Frattaroli, Hinks, Pete, and Yorkoski chipped in with a six- pointer each. Russ Bentz, another senior, scored two extra points. The powerful Beaver defense kept the Bishops in submission until the final period, when Billy Ochnich scampered for ll yards and a touchdown to save the Bishops from being shut out. Russ Bentz feels nothing but trouble on his way through the line. L.C.H.S., 36-Shenandoah, 6 The Beavers, bouncing back from last week's disheartening loss to Cumberland Valley, virtu- ally reduced the Atoms to nothing, as they rolled to a 36-6 victory for their initial victory at home. Tony Sciotti, the Beaver scatback, rolled his way to three T.D.'s to lead the scoring parade, while Hoot Hinks and Joe Pete each scored once as the Beavers gave out with their heavi- est offensive showing of the year. Sciotti also chipped in with one extra point for a total of 'I9 points and the greatest day of his career. The Beaver defense was in a stingy mood as they held the Atoms to a mere 41 yards on the ground and 61 yards through the air. That's your man, Jack. Now get him! L.C.H.S., 74-Delone, 32 The Beavers, heavy underdogs, outplayed the larger and books, as the Beaver defense weakened and allowed the heavier Squires for the- greater part of this game. At the Squires three TD's in the final four minutes. Despite the end of the third quarter, the Beavers, sparked by the great seeming runaway, the game went into the books as a moral running of Tony Sciotti and Joe Pete, actually led the victory for the Beavers. Squires 'I4-13. But the upset of the season just wasn't in the Tony Sciotti is upondod after picking up needed yardage against Dolone. 82 L.C.H.S., 72-Mt. Carmel, 6 The Beavers entered this game a bit overconfident, while the Ramblers were up as the first half score K6-61 indi- cates. The heavily favored Beavers were scored upon in the first quarter on a blocked punt and recovery by the Rams on the Beaver six. Lubeski scored on the next play and the Ramblers led 6-0. The Beavers were frustrated for the rest of the first and greater part of the second quarter. How- ever, near the end of the first half, the Beavers took pos- session of the ball on their own 40 and promptly marched 60 yards to paydirt, the final six yards picked up by Fred Buckets Frattaroli off the single wing. The ball changed hands throughout most of the third quarter without any team moving it with any degree of consistency. In the final chucker, the Beavers took a punt on their own nine and began a 91-yard sustained drive, with Tony The Threat Sciotti carrying the mail the final 5 yards last down. The Ramblers took the ensuing kickoff, and determinedly moved inside the Beaver ten. But the Beavers put on a great goal line stand and allowed the Ram's nary a yard, pushing them back to the 14, where they took over on downs. From there, Dandy Don Yorkoski ran out the clock on a series of quarterback sneaks to preserve the victory. wr! 5,14 A Tribute To Tony All County All League Tony Sciotti doesn't look like a foot- ball player even with his helmet and shoulder pods on, but looks are often misleading. One look at the well-liked, 5' 7 , T42-pound senior scatback as an observer from the stands and you'll change your opinion mighty quick. The Threat can be seen circling the end of one play, diving over the line on the next, then completing a pass on the next. He can be called no less than the Frank Gifford of the Beavers. Tony was picked for the first team-all-county by the Lebanon Daily News, and All-CPC first team by the five coaches of the league. But perhaps his greatest thrill took place on a cold November night when, with 25 seconds left against Shamokin Catholic, Tony picked off an enemy pass and promptly romped 80 yards to paydirt and victory. A GREAT TEAM BEARS THE FRUIT OF VICTORY Through unconquerable team play and unselfish sacri- fice, the 1957-T958 edition of the Beavers' basketball team completed the most successful season in the school's history with a sensational 19-5 record. The greatest start ever wit- nessed by the school took place this season when the Beavers, sparked by no less than six men, were on the long end of the string at the end of the first fourteen contests. Victims of the speedy Beaver assault during this streak were as follows: Norlebco, South Lebanon, Elco, Bethel 122, New Bermudian, Mount Carmel, Hummelstown, Cornwall, L.C.H.S. Alumni, Delone Catholic, York Catholic, Lancaster Catholic, and Shamokin Catholic. The last four of the afore- mentioned opponents were members of the C.P.C. League and, in defeating the four of them in fiercely played, tight- scoring struggles, the Beavers moved hostilities to Tracy Hall in Harrisburg to battle with the speedy, big McDevitt Crusaders. It can be said that the Beavers tightened up a bit at the beginning of the game and, with the size of the McDevitt court and the McDevitt players, the fourteen-game streak of the Blue and White came to an end by a score Of 67-44. The Beavers then came to life by taking the measure of Elizabethtown at E-town after trailing by as much as 'I7 points at halftime, and gave their cross-town rivals, the Lebanon High Cedars, the fight of their lives before bowing 76-72 at the Lebanon High School gym. Again the Beavers came to life by crushing Cornwall, but they were surprised in their next game by a speedy Elco five. Catholic High quickly rebounded to grab three quick league victories over Delone, York, and Lancaster. The Beaver victory over Lancaster again threw the Central Pennsy Catholic League into a tie between Lebanon and McDevitt. The championship game was played at the Blue and White gym and McDevitt, after trailing for the greater part of four quarters, came on with a flurry to down the stubborn Beavers by a 50-41 score. The Beavers then closed out season play by absorbing an 89-73 loss to Shamokin Catholic. ff i 3, as iiagf ,Q , Z yu 4 5 ap, A ,fa V wif' 55:55, ' K xv' v 1 H5m?v1'- 3 gwfggfnllii I-i2Avf5faw?iE':-i K ' iffszfaiwzai -- S kwkw, L, ., wgffI5aa. f fe M Rf ?5fIZwgm 44:9 ,ff wgyfifffiifl n.e2Qs'Hi ff1m5 Q ,f , : 3 K V 1 ,E is 881851 755,15- :2 mgig ' zz S252 .
