All the juniors come dressed in their best and it is a gala day. There is a feeling of excitement as we wait to receive our rings. What a thrill we get when we really have the ring in our possession and we not only admire it ourselves but give all our friends the thrill of gazing at it. It is the Christmas present we like most. Our principal blesses 1957 rings on the day we begin our Christmas vacation. Millicent Bruder receives her ring while junior girls await their turn. Jeannette Folmer. BLESSING OF TI-IE RINGS O God, by Whose word all things are made holy, pour out Thy blessing on these rings. Grant that those who wear them in accordance with Thy will and Thy law and with a spirit of thanks- giving may experience by Thy power, health in body and protec- tion in soul as they invoke Thy most holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The juniors admire their long awaited class rings. Frank Fischer's ring is the center of the stage. On November 2, All Souls' Day, we walk to St. Maryls Cemetery to pray for the souls in purgatory. Singing the psalms at the graves of our deceased relatives and friends, we realize more vividly that it is a holy and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead. From the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord chants the student body. From every part of the cemetery the ceremony is very impressive. 1 n Q.. -a ,,. J, -J '1- V .f 1 H' 4 ,. Fk K if fb ' . Retreat is good for the soul Our retreat regulations open with the statement: A retreat is a time of prayer, of thought, of examination of conscience, and of silence, Silence is to be observed at all timesf' Although keeping silence was a new ex- perience, we were able to follow the regula- tion and so to benefit spiritually. Father Bernard V. Mattern was retreat master for the girls and Father Salvatore V. Zangari was retreat master for the boys. The retreat lasted for three days and con- sisted of meditation, spiritual reading, exami- nation of conscience, conferences, rosary, Mass, Holy Communion and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The priests and sisters, the crucifix, religious pictures-all make an indelible impression on our minds and hearts. We take holy water when we enter and leave our class rooms. We begin and end each lesson with a short prayer. Ar the beginning and end of each session we raise our hearts and minds to God. Our teachers stress all religious feasts and observances as they come along. If a person is the sum total of his thoughts and experiences, we ought to be good because we have been given every possible help to goodness. We have problems too We have problems, too was the subject of the panel at which Joseph Singer presided at the Villanova Press Conference. Foremost among our problems is the one of lceeping up our tradition of top-ranlcing yearboolcs. We are proud that in the past we have had the honor of Yearbook of Distinction from Marquette University and Key- stone Award twice from the Pennsylvania School Press Association. This year we had a scheduled period for yearbook worlc. Even with the advantage of a class period, however, we had to work early and late to meet the printeris deadline. The Athletic Banquet is a social success Our Football Banquet was held at the Lebanon Country Club. The festivities began at 8:00 with a delicious ham dinner. Monsignor Weaver said the blessing and all was set for a fine evening. After dinner Mr. Melusky introduced toastmaster, Tiny Parry. Mr. Parry, an excellent speaker, gave a very entertaining talk. He then introduced the guest speaker, Coach jim Trimble, formerly with the Philadelphia Eagles, whose talk on teamwork and sportsmanship was very instructive and very entertaining. Coach Sheehy told the importance of foot- ball in that it builds character and forms men. Monsignor Maher, reminiscing, brought back memories to the old timers. The final speaker of the evening was Mon- signor Weaver who started football at L.C.l-l.S. His words on his favorite sport were appreciated by all. This wonderful event attended by so many prominent guests, priests, parents and friends gave us added reasons for being proud of our school. Another view of the speakers' table gives us Mr. Charles Gauer, Coach Trimble, Tiny Parry, A. The Beavers, fresh from football camp, encountered a heavy, experienced coal-region team but succeeded in pulling a few well-executed plays that led to victory. The outstanding plays of the evening were a brilliant end-around by Joe Lauzon, a quick pitch to Jim Reilly and an off-tackle by Joe Pete. The team suffered a severe blow by losing its quarterback Bill Pavone, who suffered a broken leg. This casualty proved more costly as the season progressed. L.C.H.S.-26 Cocalico-0 In a postponed game, the Beavers met the Cocalico Eagles on a fine fall evening, and then proceeded from the beginning to sooth their wrath after the Coatesville beating. It was the Beavers all the way, as the score shows. The high- lights of the evening were a variety of well-timed football plays. In the first quarter, Jim Reilly, Don Shounder and Joe Pete marched the ball down to the one yard line, where sophomore quarterback, Tom Fillingeri, snealced the ball over the line for the first score. In the second quarter the Beavers climaxed an 82 yard drive with an end around play by Joe Lauzon. It is noteworthy that Jim Reilly's 32 yard run and a 14 yard drive by Don Shounder aided a great deal in this second T.D. Later in the second quarter, Tom Fitzgib- bons stole the ball from a sur- prised Eagle and proceeded forty yards for another Beaver tally. After a scoreless third quarter, the Beavers ended the evening with another touch- down, this time from a pitch- out by Tom Arnold to John Pete, good for 12 yards. Dennis Barbini succeeded in making two extra points good. and the scoreboard read 26-O when the final whistle blew. an unsellislm spirit ol sacrifice BILL PAVONE-Quarterback Co-captain Jim Reilly, Ed Anderson and Coach Sheehy in a tense sideline conference. The Beavers played a terrific game showing that desire and determination are all you really need. After halting a first period Crusader thrust, the Beavers proceeded to give them the battle of the year. Coach Sheehy pulled the old Notre Dame box formation from moth-balls and ran havoc over Lancaster the first half. John Pete sparked the Beaver drive with a 25 yard sprint. A shot from the sideline gives us Marty Sorscek, Father Gross, Monsignor Weaver, and Ed Michalek. Intense fire of nervous Reilly, Pete, and Lauzon carried consecutively to push the ball over for a T.D. Lancaster was shocked. They would have been doubly shocked had not a 45 yard run by John Pete been recalled by the officials minutes later. At half time, it was L.C.l'l.S.-6, Lancaster-0. In the second half, the Crusaders fought back and scored two T.D.,s, which proved suffi- cient for victory. The Beavers played a good game. Enuff said! L.C.H.S.-12 St. Michael's-6 The Beavers scored two quick T.D.'s in the first period. After this the Bulldogs from St. Michael put on a terrific passing bombardment which netted 6 points. The Beavers were on the defense for three periods. The Bulldogs played a stubborn and 'lg Joe Lauzon scored on the end around. Three minutes later he blocked a punt which set up the next score. He was the outstanding player energy are further requisites TOM E. ARNOLD-Quarterback John Pete eats up yardage against Wilson and goes over for the touchdown. L.C.H.S.-6 Delone-33 The Squires of Delone came to Lebanon for the 1955 game. The Beavers were not up for this game. Ir Bonfire typifies our hopes. Our boy John runs 15 yards for a T.D. and takes a defenseman from Cocalico along with him. may he said, however, that Delone had a good team cap- able of moving the ball on the ground or in the air. The Beavers had little to cheer about. The football player JOHN PETE-Halfback Joe Lauzon, our big end, hauls in a well-thrown pass to outwit a Delone defenseman. L.C.H.S.-34 Wilson-32 This was the most exciting game we had for a long time. Imagine being thirteen points behind within three minutes, and then to hght back and win. This was a see-saw battle with both teams having their moments of glory. For Wilson, it was primarily an aerial game. They moved the ball consistently by passing. For the Beavers, it was their old-running game. Here was a game that saw three perfectly executed plays, John Pete,s record smashing 97 yard gallop, Joe Lauzon's 50 yard end-around, and the three deep pass pattern from Filingeri to Jim Reilly. Buck Shounder played his best game of the season. L.C.H.S.-6 Lansdale-12 The final game of the 1955 season ended on a sorrowful theme as the Beavers were unable to pull this one out of the fire. Fighting desperately for a winning season, the valiant Beavers scored the first T.D. on a drive climaxed by John Pete's end run of eight yards and Jim Reilly's dash of 19 yards and the goal line. In the second quarter the Lansdale eleven fought back and managed to tie the score by the end of the first half. Excitement ran high as early in the third stanza, Lansdale marched over the goal line after a 60 yard drive, highlighted by the Crusaders' spunky Ralph Giulliano. An inspiring moment came for the Beavers when Tom Fil- lingeri faded back and threw a long pass to Jim Reilly, who was open and beyond the Lansdale secondary. The ball, how- ever, slipped from Jim's hands and the Beavers' morale was broken. The seniors who played their last game for Lebanon Catholic were: Tom E. Arnold, Bob Burch, Dennis Barbini, Tim Coyle, Anthony Frank, Tom Fitzgibbons, Joe Lauzon, Charles Plantz, Bill Pavone, John Pete and Jim Reilly. When the call for basketball was given at L.C.H.S. for the 1955-56 season, it was answered by thirty eager Beavers. Among these were one senior, five juniors, seven sophomores, and the remainder were freshmen. On December the second, three weeks after prac- tice had started, a quintet which consisted of three sophomores, a junior, and a senior embarked on the road to the oncoming season. After the first few games, the Beavers found that their lack of height presented a great problem which bothered them throughout the year. Cnly because of the hustle and desire to win were they able to over- come this disadvantage. High points of the season were the Beavers' victory over a strong Delone team from McSherrys- town, Tom R. Arnoldls breaking the school scoring record for a game and for a season, but most of all was the teamwork that was outstanding throughout the entire schedule. Simpson.
