Oliver, who has freely Editorial As everyone knows, William Shakespeare is the foremost English poet and dramatist and one of the wor1d's great poets. There is no phase of human experience or emotion that his art cannot encompass, nor any quality of language beyond his range. He was a true artist. We indicate the sections of the 1958 ANGELUS by quotations from Wi-lliam Shakespeare's writings. We cannot all be as talented as Shakespeare was, and we cannot all become famous, but we can have some definite goal in mind and strive to reach it. In this way we may gain happiness and the best that life has to offer us. Leavitt, you not only have given us academic instruction, but you have provided games, plays, dances, and many other activities for us. You have given us many good times and the opportunity to make new friends. You have given us higher views of the dignity and sacredness of life. We have benefited from all. We now go out into the world where every man must play his part as William Shakespeare has said. MAINE February eo, 1958 To the Members of the Class of 1958: Actually this note is for you to read years later,be- cause you may not have time now with the excitement of the new book, the rush of commencement, and the prospect of future plans. Looking through a yearbook lo immensely interestin much more kind your ng after graduation is g. Certainly the teachers appear ly than you remember them, and of course classmates have the eternal bloom of youth. Their pictures bring back a flood of long-forgotten incidents - a certain dance, basketball games, perhaps even an after- school detention. Having lived a little longer, you have forgotten the petty Joys and sorrows of everyday schoolg and you now recall the really important precepts and examples of Leavitt. Once they may have seemed hard and unreasonable, but now you find them sensible and worthwhile. Yes, you conclude as you close the book, Leavitt was the best four years of your life. Very sin ely, x. When Leavitt opened last fall our Senior Class consisted of thirty-eight members. At our first class meeting the following officers were elected, President, Frank Youland, Vice President, William Roberts, Secretary, Mary Hill, Treasurer, Nancy Sampson, Editor, Marie Newton, and Advisor, Mr. Mac- Morran. The class is working very hard to earn money for our trip to New York and Washington. We plan to leave April thirteenth. Our annual class drama Nuts to You! was enjoyed very much by both the audience and the cast. We have sponsored several dances, including a very profitable Football Victory Dance. We have sold pies, and at home basketball games we have sold refreshments. Our cabaret, Club 58, was a huge success on January 31. The talents of many students from all classes con- tributed to make the big night a truly gala affair. 4 ff Class members have been very active in sports, cheerleading, school clubs, and o :ization nna and Rhoda Richmond are girls' basketball captains. Mary Hill is president of the Future makers f America, Gerald Jordan is president of the National Honor Society, Frank Youland was in charge of the annual school magazine drive in the fall Sandra Peare was class representative. LOWELL BOWLES Advisor ------ ------------- M RS, PHYLLIS AMBROSE Practically the whole chapter went to the District E convention at Gould and had a fine time participating in the different workshops. o In the fall we sponsored a Hay-Ride and Square-Dance which proved very successful. Don Quimby is to be thanked for the great help he gave us. This winter a group of the girls participated in a program for the Livermore Grange, which helped to explain our goals, purposes, and emblem. In March, a fashion show during an Assembly period is being planned, with the clothes modeled made by the girls. A number of food sales will be held to increase our treasury. The State Convention in the spring is always something to which to look forward, Donna Quimby is our nominee for First Vice President for the state. We also have planned to supply the hot supper Parents' Night for the students and parents alike. Finally, there will be our annual outing to some place of interest, which will top off a very successful season. Glee Club Mr. Dolphin, Director. Seated: M. Gilbert, A. Hines, I. Lee, I. Bryant, L. Leavitt had an excellent team this year, but unfortunately one of the teams we played last year dropped out, which left only three teams in the league. This meant we had only four games, three of which we won. Twenty-one boys turned out for the first practice. The whole team worked hard. This hard work and our excellent teamwork account for the 3-1 record. The first game we played was at home with Eliot. We won 33-7. The second was at York with York winning 30-20. This was a hard-fought game, which could have gone either way, but unfortunately we lost. The next two games we won: one with York 27-12, the other with Eliot 27-6. The team was ably coached by Mr. Oliver. ,viii 1 Q Q- ' x 1' , 1 1 . J ' -rl' X Q 4 F 1 ff 1 M,f f Q fs: 5 'SW PQ + X X45 ' N ax: ! gg ,V 5 L H h , ' I4 1 2 F 2. 5 . 12 N? vi Y .72 ,!',l A ,. Because we began the season late, we played only four games We were triumphant in all. Our captain was Anna Irish. At the end of the season, we lost Faith Carver, Carolyn Maxwell, and Becky Morris, who were grad uated.
