There would also not be as much time lost in preparing the copy, as all material could be planned, typewritten and checked in one room, in- stead of in three or four, as at present. Uncompleted work could be left where it was instead of being hustled into a drawer in another room ar the close of a period, only to be assembled again in the first spare moment. The present library would be an ideal place for such a workshop, lt has really be- come inadequate for library purposes, Shelves are over-crowded and many books have had to be tucked away in closets, making it difficult for pupils to use them readily, However, it would be excellent as a workshop as it is well lighted, easy of access and large enough for our purpose. The staff has tried to do everything possible to produce a good book this year. We feel a yearbook is more than a reminder of classmates and school days, wherever it goes, it will represent the school and its activities. The students are anxious to have a book they can be proud to show anyone. Many people who have never been on our campts will see this book and judge our school by it. We wish to thank all who have helped in any way in the production of the book, and those who have so loyally supported us by taking advance subscriptions, i.Q JANE NELDER Editor in Chief -l I ,a S ,lt E DITORIA L BOA RD Seated: Nancy Evans, Business Managerg Roger Timberlake, Assistant Editor: Jane Nelder, Editor, Standing: Patricia Twitchell, Alumni Editorg Roger Libby, Assistant Business Manager, Mrs, Smith, Advisorg Pamelia Willard, Assistant Alumni Editor, YEARBOOK OUR RIGHT-HAND HELPERS LaVerna Gibbs and Virginia Maxwell STAFF f , :P 3 1717- - ..,,, CLASS EDITORS Bemard Langlin '55, Marlene Durgin '56, Arlene Hinkley '57, Carleton Ramsdell '54, , gsm ? ,gif Jw.-rim Mil, A. ,ff r x , ESE' V. 1 Q K , l 7 1 P .x L. Hinkley, At the beginning of the school yearQ1953-541 twenty-eight members of the Senior class reported, one of whom is a student from Germany. At the first class meeting the following officers were elected: President, Donald Rickerg Vice President, Nancy Evansg Secretary, Virginia Maxwell, Treasure, Winston Gilbert, Class Editor, Carleton Rams- dellg Class Advisor, Gerald Alden, About two weeks after school started last fall, one of our classmates, LeRoy Stevens, became seriously ill and was forced to leave school. A few months later, much to our surprise and regret, he passed away leaving our class with a total of twenty seven members. As soon as everyone got settled down to regular duties, the class faced the usual task of raising money for the long planned class trip to New York and Washington. Among the fund raising activities were a drama, a supper, followed by a dance: a paper drive, and a Plastic party. The class is very grateful to Mrs. Dunn for her efforts in getting up the Plastic party. The drama cast was as follows: Donald Ricker, Virginia Maxwell, Winston Gilbert, Edna Morris, Bemard Hathaway, Janice Pulsifer, Wallace Gagne, Patricia Twitchell, Shirley Jordan, Victoria Payeur, Marian Perry, Nancy Evans, LaVema Gibbs. Prompters were: Goldie Richardson and Jane Nelder, Our coach was Gerald Alden. Each member of the class is eagerly looking forward to April twenty-third, the date we hope to leave for Washington. After our return, final examinations and commencement will soon be keeping us busy. Before leaving Leavitt, the class wants to thank the teachers, parents and friends who have helped to make these four years instructive, as well as very happy. Q7 PLAY CAST Seated: W. Gilbert, L. We had three newcomers with us as school began. Beverly Blanchard, who came to us from Massachusetts, David Youland from Alabama, and Nomia Masterman from Livermore Falls, Maine. At the beginning of the second semester we had another addition in the form of six foot two Eugene Bunten, who came to us from Old Town, Maine, We have quite a few outstanding athletes in the Sophomore class. In basketball for boys, David Watkins takes the lead and very versatile Harriette Faunce gets the honors for girls with high-scorers Jean Sennett and Penny Roberts as close runners-up. During the fall months we had several sock-hops which were quite successful, Later we plan to have a big record-hop. Among other things, we are going to have a drama in the spring to make money for the class trip that we are looking forward to in the future, SOPHOMORE CLASS LF'-0 Henry Faunce, Presidentg C. GIRLS' SOFTBALL At our first practice on April 8, about twenty girls reported to Coach Merriman. The first game of the season was on May 5 at Woodstock, and their girls defeated us by just two runs, the final score being Leavitt 9, Woodstock 11. On May 6 we played at Buckfield where we won 6 to 2 with June Bubier scoring the most runs. Our first home game was with West Paris on May 7, We held the lead for four innings, However, letting in six runs in both the fifth and sixth innings led to our downfall and we lost 10 to 18. Woodstock came to Leavitt May 21 for a retum game. The two teams were very evenly matched, but Woodstock managed to get in eight runs in the fourth inning to defeat us 14 to 19. Both Janice and Ioan Pulsifer made home runs in the second inning, We played at West Paris May 25, but proved no more successful against them than in the previous game, losing 12 to 20, in spite of getting six runs in both the third and fourth innings. Janice Pulsifer scored a home run in the fourth inning, We beat Dixfield by the narrow margin of 18 to 20 on their home field May 26. LaVema Gibbs hit a home run in the third inning, This proved to be the last game of the season as Buckfield forfeited their second game with us. Arlene Timberlake acted as our manager and Goldie Richardson was assistant manager, Janice Pulsifer has been elected captain for 1954. '. J 12 as A , svn: IWVWC ,M 1 !
