Shias who through ltorla THE MENTAIIY III NEED OUR HELP' It IS almost unbelievable that ln this countrv of ours so advanced ln scrence educatlon of its people and care of nts ammals that we have mental mstltutron IH whxch slck human bemgs are not glven as good care as we glve to the cats ln our own homes or to the plgs m the farmers barns How can a cxvlllzed people thoughtle ssly put asrde thrs subject without even thmkxng serxously about lt? If 1 dearly loved member of your famlly became mentally rll would you want hum to be put mto a plg pen a snake put' That rs exactly what rs happenmg rn thls country thus very mstant and rt IS something which might happen ln your own family today or perhaps tomorrow' Most people will not discuss mental lllness srnce It IS thought of as 1 te rruhle shameful drsgrace which rums forever a person s hfe anel deprrves hlm of hrs rlghtful place rn soclety when he h rs been cure d Thus shoulel not be so and must not be so' Mental illness IS only a srckness of the mmd just as a broken leg or a fractured arm IS a physical allment A disease of the mmd IS no more of a disgrace than rs a broken arm or leg People must lose their foohsh ldeas concernlng mental rllness When one comes back cured from a mental lnstltutron we must give him hrs chance to hve a normal well adJusted l1fe Usually under the proper care these bodily aflllctlons are cured However lf a person wlth a broken leg does not go to a good doctor and have It set and treated properly he may have a crooked leg for hfe Unfortunately there are thousands who are doomed to pend their llves m mental mstrtutrons as helpless bemgs One out of every twenty babies born will spend some part of his llfe ln one of these 182 mstltutlons rn wluch we have 560 000 patrents In these snake plts there are hundreds of deaths caused by beatings of attendants and other abuses Our mstltutlons are terribly overcrowded The patlents exist on a starvatlon dlet and manv slave for twelve hours a dav lf thev are well enough Stlll others are kept locked for weeks at a time m darls filthv foul smelling rooms with absolutely no clothes to protect their dlrtv shlv ermg bodles Many are gxven drugs or kept for days at a time rn restramts The food thev eat IS not fit for animals In many mstltutlons food IS just thrown on the tables and left for the half starved patients to fight and grab for Thexr menus are not well balanced You ask W hat IS the cause of these horrnble cond1t1ons9 VVhy lsn t somethmg done about them? Whose Job IS this anyw ay? Thls IG a country of the people by the people and for the people This IS your Job Are you wrllmg to do any thing about rt? The first great task IS the preventlon of such mental sickness W must make happy and secure homes for our cluldren keep them healthy ind alwavs be near to help them through their bad moments of trouble and unhappiness Those who are doctors nurses mmxsters teachers all ln each eommunltv must do their best to help our Clllldrell become self confident h tppv mdlvrduals nn adult llfe If we can do this we can prev ent many cases of mental xllness before they are even started VVe must provide funds for our lnstxtutlons so that they may be able to hlre more and better tramed doctors nurses and attendants Many lnstltutlons are spendmg only sixty cents per day on each patlent' There IS not enough money to buy soap and other common needs The attendants are so underpaxd that mstltutlons can get only those untramed poorly educated people who cannot find work elsewhere There are not enough nurses to h ne even one ln wards of over one hundred such people ln most of our mstltutlons Doctors are overworked and some have as many as one thousand patients under thelr care and are unable to vxslt all of them m a smgle d ry are we gomg to sit by while our loved ones suffer unto death m one of these snake pits? We also have musical talent in our class as Nedra Additon, Jean French, June Harkness, Thelma Knight, and Nora Graffam are in the Glee Club and Jean Genthner, Jean French, Thelma Knight, Betty Hannaford and Norma Gralfam are in the Band. Those out for Debate this year are Hope Cunningham, Jean Gcnthner, Robert Hersey, and Norma Graffam. Betty Hannaford is secretary of the Student Council this year, and Teddy Bova and Jean Genthner are class representatives. It seems we have a few John and Ethel Barrymores in our class, for Betty Hannaford, Jean Genthner, Robert Pulsifer, Leslie Pearl, and Norma Graffam took part in the S. A. A. Drama.
