It has gone by unusually fast for the Seniors, because this is their last year at LHS. As usual, the year has been crammed with homework, achievements, drabness, parties, assemblies, failures, tests, successes, fun, and work. In order that you might rev-live the experiences of tho 1951-52 school year and your life at LHS, we have strived to make this June Bug a pictorial chronicle of the school year. lf, when you pore through this annual, your recollec- tions are stimulated by this record of activities in which you, your classmates, and teachers have participated, then our aims have been fulfilled. Builders were Busboon 85 Rauh of Salina, and architects were Feth 85 Hazlewood of Leavenworth and Felt, Dunham Sz Krien of Kansas City, Mo. The Senior High School building was erected in 1933 for the education of boys and girls who desire to increase their skill in the vocational field or who are preparing to enter college. The steel, concrete, and brick construction of enior Sdoof the building offers little chance of a fire such as the one that burned the former high school building to the ground in 1932. The school's 670 students occupy 30 rooms, which include a library, cafeteria, study hall, science laborato1'y, typing room, home economic rooms, gym, auditorium, jour- nalism room, and music room, plus regular classrooms. The cost of the building, completed on March 15, 1933, was S181,584. . 7 ,.,..r, . l' carve? gui! ing , The Harvey Building, which houses the Leavenworth Board of Education offices, is located at Seventh and Olive Streets. This building was donated by the Har- ocafionaf Annex The Vocational Annex is a comparatively new addition to LHS. This building, located at 512 Walnut Street, was first put into use in Septeniver of 1950. The office of O. R, Young, director of adult and vocational classes. is located in the annex. Classes conducted there are gen- eral metals, woodwork, mechanical drawing, machine cabinet, millwork, disa- tributive education, retail selling, and Office practice. Situated in the building are superintendent, clerk. cafeteria super- visor, elementary school supervisor. L music supervisor, and superintendent of buildings and grounds. Behind the scurry of students, teachers, and the main school building, are several buildings that people don't often connect with LHS. Among these are the Harvey Building, location of the board of education W, , .,,l - Xgijgk-f 4.-1, Q I l'l'l OP? Abeles Armory, the new ROTC field- house, was completed April 15, 1952. A sum of 356,000 was appropriated by the school board to pay for the 140 ft. by '70 ft. building. The armory is located at Fifth and Isabell Streets. The modern- istic rooms contain facilities for sopho- more, junior, and senior classrooms: of- fices: and storage for equipment. We began at the bottom as freshmen and felt so proud on enrollment day when we could at last be a part of the school we had looked up to for so long. To represent our class, we elected Jim Hunt, president, Molsey de Loach, vice-president, and Ralph Knapp, Wayne Orlowske, and Ruth Anne Gjelsteen were on the cabinet. Bennie Robert- son was a major letter in track, and thus our wheels began to turn. Heralding our sophomore year were the new students which trooped over from Junior High. Bennie Robertson was chosen class president with Mary Miller assisting him as vice-president. Our cabinet members were Bob Gwart- ney, Joane Manney, Wayne Orlowske, and Naomi Sterett. Evelyn Hane and Bud Sanger capably filled their positions as A team cheerleaders, while Bob Last won the Chicago Tribune Award for his ability in ROTC. In the generator of our school spirit, the athletic department, Bob Gwartney, Bennie Robertson, Bob Last, Norman Brown, and Charles Hall won major letters as outstanding examples of our future. On the student council were Bob Last, Charles Hall, Marianne J urgens, and Mary Ruth Schrimpf. As Upper classmen at last, we were ready and willing to take on new honors and responsibilities. Our class execu- tives, Doug Curtis, president, and Doris Krekeler, vice- president, shouldered the class problems while Babs Ham- ilton, Donna Seeley, Wayne Orlowske, Ann Kunkle, and Bob Gwartney filled the cabinet positions. Once again we chose Evelyn Hane and Bud Sanger to lead our cheerleading steam engines. 28 The leadelshxp of Fllz mbeth M01 an Ralph Knapp Doug Curtls and Bob Hessenflow was acknowledged when thev went as our delegates to Guls and Boys State respectlvely On the student councll we1e Bob Last Mary Ruth Schrlmpf Marlanne Jul gens and Charles Hall Ten boys 16C61V9d major letters They are Chapman Brown Robertson Moore Hall Last Gwartney Ellls and McClanahan Our class lntellects Ellzabeth Horan Joanne Zxnk Joane Man ney and Ty Tvler won the Wollmfm Awalds Two full houses showered pralses on our class and Mls M1nn1e Mul dock for her posxtlon as dlrectol of tl1e class play New Fues The Junlor Sen1o1 Prom wh1ch used as 1tS theme Sweet Fantasy was one of the sweetest to have l1t the eyes of the upperclassmen The flnal step IH the long ladder of our hlgh school career IS now underfoot and we are at last sophlstlcated sen1o1s We proudly chose Dave Cassell as p1es1dent and Bob Hessenflovs as vlce D1 esldent Wltll Joane Manney Ellza beth Moran Ann Kunkle Wavne Ollowske Dax 1d Chapman and Ben Ellls on the cabmet Bob Last was d1st1ngu1shed as presldent of our student body Our class boasted Marl anne Jurgens Evelvn Hane and Bud Sanger as chee1 leaders Marlanne Jul gens relgned as Homecomlng Queen Wlth Evelyn Hane and DOIIS Klekeler as her attendants Bob Last was cadet colonel and Ma1y M1lle1 preslded beslde hlm as battahon sponsor Sponsol of Company A was Ann Kelly Company B Jean Breaux Company C Joane Manney Twenty foul boys recened magor letters thls vear Hlghllghtmg the vear s soclal events was the Jun1o1 Sen1o1 Prom whlch used as 1tS hlghly contaglous theme Spr1ng Fever The Llon and the Mouse ou1 last class plav recelved laulels for 1tS success Ty Tylel was plesented Wlth an award 1n SCIQHCQ for hxs achlevements and Bob Gwartney and Davld Chapman 1eC91V9d spol ts scholarshlps FOI then outstandmg SCl1Ol3.St1C f1b1l1t5 Jacquellne Gal ner and Joane Mannev rec 1ved the most coveted pos1t1on as Val8d1CtO113.I1 and salutollan IH that 01 del Gladuatlon marks the end of our load and now that oppo1tun1t1es branch on e1the1 Slde of us we w1ll thlnk back one day and w1ll f1nd that we tl uly have nevel fo1 gotten what has been the most carefree days of our l1ves 29 0l'll0l 61,556 ,MJ l0l g ' . . A spirited bunch of Pioneers, again guided by Coach Leonard Hofstra, faced the prospects of a championship season, when they smashed through with a 25-0 victory over Washington, this year's champion in the East Kansas League. A morale booster came in the opening league tilt when the Pioneers downed Argentine to the tune of 25-20. Taking advantage of numerous breaks, Lawrence trounced the Pioneers 39-6. Losing this game put Leaven- worth out of the running for the NEKL Championship, for the roaring Lions maintained an undefeated season record. Sparked by Halfback Norman Brown, the ground-gain- ing carps trimmed the Ottawa eleven. 18-7 in the blue and white homecoming tilt. Shawnee Mission was the next hurdle for the onrushing Pioneers. Playing midst snow and driving wind, the Indians scored a 13-7 win over the Pioneers. 56 Top: Where's the ball? That seems to be the question in the Leavenworth-Wyandotte game. The Pioneers shown playing their third game, which, incidentally, was the first loss of the season, are Bob Last, 4811, Bennie Ellis, 1791, Bill Ysbrand. 467r, Howard Moore, l80i, Q and Dave Chapman, 1831. Leaven- worth's only tally came in the sec- ond quarter, while the Bulldogs scored in the first and third quar- ters to defeat our home eleven 14-7. 1- 314 Chosen by a vote of the coaches and newspaper men in the Northeast Kansas League Area as NEKL All-Stars from the Pioneer footballssquad wre Dave Chap- man, Norman Brown, and Bob Gwartney.
