In the fall of 1947 the doors of Leavenworth beckoned us, and we enrolled as the class of 1951. Little did we realize when we became Freshman that we were beginning a most memorable period of our lives. The initial difficulties of adjustment to a secondary school curriculum and the mischievous antics of our upperclassmen bothered us at first, how- ever, as the months went on, we overcame these difficulties. September, 1948, found us proud Sophomores, and fully initiated mem- bers of the student body Although our studies were a bit harder, we were able to master them, for we had become a year older, and presumably somewhat wiser. We were considered upperclassmen as juniors and our whole environ- ment seemed to change. We became more social-minded, attending our school's dances and had two of our own, the junior Social and the Junior Prom. Time marched on and we found ourselves Seniors, clothed with the Dignity of our status, and the responsibility of setting a good example in all ways for the other classes. Various committees had to be formed to conduct the many business and social activities of the class. We held dances, the proceeds of which were used to cut down our class expenses. Every individual Senior selected his best proof from the photographer, and proudly displayed his class ring. As the spring of 1951 rushed upon us, all our thoughts were tumed to the great day of graduation, the day when our four satisfying years would come to an end. After leaving the halls of Leavenworth, we shall miss the companionship of many of our friends and teachers, but we will have eyes ever forward as we enter a new world, to take upon our shoulders some small share of our national and local problems which are the natural heritage of every new generation. - ' Class of 1951 Dx 4:11 ..-414 1' . -5:1512 .-:ffl .. .:ffE3EC-' .-ss:s:s -5- ..s:1:aa:s:s:z:fs A-5 plkzrkgigijkz. . t , ,. Her four years have been busy ones, for in addition to gaining first honors she found time to take an active part in extra-curricular activities, she has done all this and made a lot of friends. With these qualities and achievments we know Frances will just keep going along in the same pleasing and successful way. ARNOLD BARON Salutatorian Arnold, quiet, serious, deliberate, not only won second honors but in being elected as class president showed he possessed qualities of leadership. He has been quite busy as pres- ident and most active in making class affairs function smoothly. As editor of the Tech-O- Scope he showed the same efficiency. We can but wish him the same kind of success in the years to come. HONOR ROLL Frances Genovese ......... ............... V aledrctonan Arnold Baron ......... ............ On Tuesday afternoon one representative from each of the schools assembles at W.B.R.Y. broadcasting studios where, under the direction of Mr. Howard, the various news items and stories are worked into a smoothly running program. Then, on Friday aftemoon, the entire cast meets to go on the air. They go through the script two or three times, timing it and correcting it, and then at 5:30 they are on the air. The representatives from Leavenworth are at the microphone - Marie Del Gatti, Barbara Bovino, Louis Petro Roy, and Millie Anzivine. At the extreme left is Mr. Howard, program director at W.B.R.Y., who has helped the group along and was very patient during some terribly trying times. Of course it wasnlt all work. Mr. Howard accompanied the Hi-Liters to New York City where they went to various television studios. They also went to Mr. Howard's home where they had a hot dog roast. Mmmm good!!! CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club, reorganized this year, has helped to cultivate the student's interest in photography. One of the manifold purposes was to give advice and guidance con- cerning knowledge of photography, and the technique of developing, print- ing, enlarging, and coloring. THE BEAR CLUB The Bear Club, a newly fomied organization, was founded by a few Senior boys, as a Senior club. The membership which rapidly increased to about 70, was made up mostly of boys with the exception of a few girls. The purpose of the Bear Club was to help promote school activities. This pro- gram was accomplished with a good cheering section at our football and basketball games. Members of the club always helped to support our dances. Leavenworths' annual Valentine Dance was sponsored this year by the Bear Club and was one of the most successful dances in recent years. Proceeds from the dance are to be used for a class picnic. Mr. Iames C. Coleman, guidance counselor of L. H. S., helped to bring success to the club by tuming in an outstanding job as the club's faculty advisor. President .... .,.... . .. . ........,, . . .. Two years ago the team was forced to disband because of the lack of range. The club started again in November with only one member of the old team. After three months of firing, we were again forced to stop for one month, because Cap- tain Arthur Dusseault and Alonzo Fitzsimmons could no longer instruct us due to working conditions. We were then coached by Ken Pinard, with Dick Owens and Pete Pozdnokas assisting. Due to the late start and coaching difficulties, we didn't have time to fonn a new team. We were able to enter only one match, and that was as individuals. The highest score was shot by a member of Crosby's team. He shot a score of 167 for prone and off hand, while Bellmay and Dinlcoski of Leavenworth both shot 160. I it-., A' ...:.-,,,eI CI gles. However, the final check up shows but one win against eight losses. L.E.-Fred O'Brian Fred who will be back next year was especially rough on defense. L.T.-joe Torsani Ioe's first year on the team, shows great promise. L.C.-Vin Mucci Vin, fast and rugged, played well against Torrington. C.-Len Pirro Zeke one of the biggest players on the team, made all city for 2 years. R.C.-joe Dunn Joe who played on the team for 4 years was very rough on defense, made all city. R.T.-Thurman Blanchard Doon, a Senior, played very Well in all the games RE.-Ben Capozzi Ben, fine offense player, showed his wares against S. H. Q.B.-Vin Coffredo Vin a fine blocker and a good pass receiver made a catch against Wilby. H.B.-Art Harrison Art, a freshman, who stands 6'2 and weighs 180 lbs. shows great promise for the coming years. H.B.-Bob Christian Bob played a hard game in all contests, he will be back next year. H.B.-Dick Lestage Dick small and fast played every game well. F.B.-Bob Cook Bob, who is about the smallest fullback around, did a fine job. Many of the others were very close and not decided till the closing minutes. The outline for the new year, however, is very bright as the boys will have the much needed experience which they lacked this season. Not one of the first eight men will graduate. This year Leavenworth placed two on the second all-city team. They are Art Harrison, a freshman, and john Faraci, a soph- omore. The most important person, however, was Mr. Donato, our coach. He is known to have a way with all his ball players, and win or lose, the boys play very hard for the Ripper . We hope that Tech, instead of the Air Force, will have him next year. The project was the brainchild of Waterbury's freshman representative Fred A. De Leon. He generously offered to be host twice each week to two students chosen by their class- mates from groups taking courses in American History and economics. It gave the students a chance to watch the mechanics of law-making at the State Capitol. The two students in the picture are John LaMattino and Ralph Cretella. Others who were elected wereg Barbara Bovino, Betty Mancinone, Vincent Mantino, Frank Olear, and Victor Rusgatis. iz? -'3'-in WK il c- f. The subjects for discussion were the geograph- ical, political, and economic aspects of Korea, Formosa, Japan, and Indo-China. Professors from Yale and New Haven Teach- ers' College gave the key-note speeches. The Leavenworth students who attended were Laura Bento, Myles DuBay, William Longo, Eva Mautino, Barbara Murphy, Richard Platt, and Victor Rusgaitis. 5855 Www L-1 if OAUIX ja-pa!
