For most people it will just mean another day which comes and passes. But for us, this day is to be a red-letter day, for we are to leave the school which has meant so much to us, never again to return as a part of the student body. For many of us'this final parting on this June evening will be a memorable one. Upon our graduation many of us will take our places in the world, and the rest of us will seek to enrich our education in some higher institution of learning. As we travel along on this unpredictable road of life, meeting our successes and failure with equal fortitude, we will sooner or later seek to recall our glorious and comparatively carefree high school days. To help in achieving this end is the main purpose of this book. lf, sometime in the near or distant future, we have the occasion to do so, we will pick up this book, thumb through the many pages of familiar faces, and proudly relive in our minds those wonderful memories of our high school career. Thus, Leavenworth, in bidding you Farewell , we, the Class of '47, leave to jjoin the ranks of your alumni who have made good in the world. May you always continue to reign as the school of schools . In conclusion we wish to express our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Blanchard, who had general supervision of the class book, Miss Gemmil for her direction and advice in the art department, and Miss Hogan and Mr. Mack for their assistance in securing the write-ups. Through their splendid cooperation, we were able to successfully edit this book. IIEIIIUATIII VVe, the class of 1947, dedicate our class book to the Leavenworth Basketball Team, whose brilliant team play, outstanding sportsmanship, Won for them, not only the championship of the Naugatuck League, second place in the state contests, but also the distinction of being the first Waterbury team to capture the New England cham- pionsbip. ,r 'vw-ua. 1 . 4 4 L ,S 1 , 557' ' Mt: ' 4 v W, A . These long hours of rehearsal were not wasted, for the concert proved to be very successful, as was shown by the presence of a large audience who heartily applauded every number, During the month of Moy, the annual Glee Club Social was held. All the members were on hand to enjoy a very pleasant evening, thereby concluding a highly enjjoyable and profitable season, The members from Leavenworth were: Theodore Bojarski Thomas McLennan Anthony Rosa Ernest Stanco Nick Perugini John Ciavrella Pat Mazzamaro Eugene Megin Arthur Marciano Leo Mehmet John Syssa George Coffey Wilbur Molin Harold Coer Edward Adomaitis RADIO CLUB During the first half of the school year, a series of weekly programs called Opinion Please was presented on station WBRY every Friday evening. On each of these broadcasts a group of students from each of the four high schools would discuss or debate the existing political and economic issues. Representatives from Leavenworth debated every four weeks, with Mr. Blanchard acting as moderator. These discussions proved to be valuable experiences for the participants, for, in presenting their points and narguments, their grammar and voices were to function faultlessly. Although each of these programs required long hours of preparation, all the members agree that it was a very pleasant experience. The debators from Leavenworth are: Elvira Tortorici Norman Dutil Dolores Migliaro Pat Mazzamaro Dorothy lmperato Robert Link Marie Cipriano Wilbur Molin Lucy Garro Thomas McLennan Carol Arnold Anthony Rosa THE JUNIOR BED CROSS The Junior Red Cross carried on its peacetime program through the school year. This consisted principally of contributing our time and effort to Veterans hospitals. Utility bags, bed slippers, pajamas and lop ropes were made by the girls while the boys made ping pong paddles and cribbage boards. All these articles were sent to veterans hospitals in Connecticut. We also sent Gift Boxes to the children of Europe, One of our members attended a Junior Red Cross convention in Cleveland, Ohio, early in June. She returned embued with enthusiasm for a more comprehensive program for next year. RIFLE CLUB Though the Rifle Cllub may not be the most publicized group in Leavenworth, it is a very active organization. Under the able instruction of Arthur Dusseault the boys practice at Biener's rifle range on Monday nights for four hours. ln the Open Road for Boys ,rifle match the team, led by Mert Johnson, Don Bates, Dave Tracy, Harold Schnerr, and Tom Carmody, placed second in the United States and were presented with a Mossberg Spotting Scope and Stand for their accuracy. At New Haven in the Connecticut Rifle and Revolver meet, Mert Johnson placed as high individual in the state and third in the country Along witn the rest of the team, he was presented with Lyman medals for their better than 50 per cent accuracy. In May and June, Coach Dusseault plans to arrage meets with Tor- rington, Hamden, the Waterbury Tool, and other school teams in the state. The first four games were victories for the Techites, but then Wilby broke the spell. The Tracy men followed up with a tie and a win over Middletown and Naugatuck, but then the other inter-city rival, Crosby, pulled the upset of the season by winning l8 to 7 before a record crowd of l2,000 on Thanksgiving day. The team defeated such power-laden teams as Manchester H2-Ol, Commercial H3-73 and tied the all-powerful Middletown team C6-67, thus gaining the number three rating of Class B teams in the state according to the Waskowitz Trophy Ratings, Players named to All-City Team: Players named to All-Valley Team: Nick LaRusso Fullback Nick LaRusso Fullback Steve Perrone Quarterback Paul lannaccone Center Paul lannaccone Center Hank Rinaldi Tackle FOOTBALL ROSTER L.E. The team also brought the Brass City its first Valley League title in seventeen years. At the start of the season the Tracymen won twelve games before being defeated in the second overtime game with Naugatuck, However, the team gained its revenge for this defeat by beating the borough combine KNO OVERTIMEI in the semi-finals of the C.l.A.C. tournament. Entering the Connecticut lnterscholastic Athletic Conference tourna- ment with a record of sixteen wins and two defeats, the Tech quintet was victorious over Windham High 57 to 34, Hartford Public 48 to 45, Naugatuck 47 to 43, but lost to Hillhouse of New Haven in the final contest 43 to 30. Leavenworth entered the New England tournament as the dark-horse and promptly downed the Rhode Island State champs from Westerly 40 to 39, while the Connecticut State champs, Hillhouse, were defeated in their opening game by Portsmouth of New Hampshire, 32 to 28. The next night, again in the Boston Garden, ortsmouth was the victim of Leavenworth by a 32 to 29 score. Saturday night, March 28th, was a History making night as far as Waterbury is concerned because on this night Leavenworth defeated the Massachusetts State Champion, Durfee, from Fall River, 5l to 44. Before this game Durfee had a victory streak of 22 games. It was the first time in the twenty-two year history of the New England tournament that a Waterbury team had won. lt also marked the fourteenth time out of a possible twenty-two times that the Nutmeg state has won this title. Leovenworth's Line-up JIM PIERSALL - L.F.-Jimmy was the outstanding scorer on the squad. In ten Valley League games he scored 99 points and in the other games on the regular schedule he cut the meshes for l3O more points. In the C.l.A.C. tournament he came through with 64 points in four contests and in the New England's he threw in 56 in three, including- his record breaking 29 against Durfee in the final game. He was named to the All-City, All-Valley, All-State and All-New England teams. ln conclusion I would like to quote ci line from a Durfee paper, Pierce all, with Piersall . JOHN MESSUP - R.F.-Though Johnny wasn't the team's high scorer, he was the third ranking Valley League scorer with II6 points. He finished the season with a 9.6 average per game and his work under the boards was invaluable. ln the New England tournament it was Johnny's last minute hoop that won the Westerly game and his fouls that put the Portsmouth game on ice . He also played brilliantly in the Durfee game. AL DOSTALER - C-Al felt a little out of place on the team at the beginning of the season, as he was the only one of the first five that didn't 'start' in l946. He ranked third in the scoring department of the team and was ninth in the Valley League with 77 points. He played his best games with Tech's arch-rival, Naugatuck, and in the New England tourna- ment. His highest scoring efforts were against Hamden's zone defense. BERNIE SHERWILL- RC.-Bernie was a great little play-maker for the team, but didn't receive the credit he deserves. He was outstanding in the two post season tournaments with his work off the backboards and in setting-up plays for his team-mates. Though small in stature, Bernie did a man-sized job all through the season and richly deserved the All-City selection. He also did his share of the scoring, making more than lOO points this season. RAY KORBUSIESKI - L.G.-From the first team, Ray will be the only one back to help Coach Tracy out next year. Ray's work off the back- boards was an outstanding feature this season and his defensive work reached its climax in the second half of the Durfee game when he limited Noga, the opposition's high scorer, to a pair of foul goals after he had scored l6 points in the first half. Along with Piersoll, Ray was selected on the All-City, All-Valley, and All-New England teams. Good luck to you next year, Ray. BUTCH DAMELlO -G. and F.-When some of the boys were out on fouls, Butch was the solution. He would come into the game and promptly take up where his predecessor had left off. The number six man on the team played in every game and did his share of the scoring. Butch is a very smart ball-handler, and it was hard for Coach Tracy to keep him in reserve. ED ROSA - G. and F.-Ed, like Damelio, was a solution to the problem of too many personal fouls. He, too, handled the ball well and was a good man to have around because of his work in the backboard department. As all the other members of the squad Eddy is well-liked and enjoys telling everyone how good the Brass City Coppers are. BUCK TITOR-C-Bob Mitchum, as the girls call him, is a rough customer under the boards. Though seeing limited action, in his first year on the team, he was very effective. Buck's outstanding feat this year was in the Westerly game when he out-jumped the rest of the players and tapped in a hoop in the closing minutes of the game. Buck will be a great help to Korbusieski next season while working from the pivot post. BOB ZINNO- F.--Though Bobby was used sparingly this season, he thrilled the crowd with his left-handed hook-shots. Bob is a great com- petitor, and we wish him luck for next season. AMAND DE ANGELIS - G. and F.- Arm is the likable artist of the team. His work will be observed on other pages of this book. He is one of the boys who put on the shooting exhibitions at half time, from half floor and beyond that line. JOE PERAZELLA- F. and C.--Joe is the long lanky fellow with the big hands. He wasn't used much this season but his height and ability to palm a basketball will serve him well next year. ERNIE HALLENBORG-G. and F.--AI Jolson's threat on the team, will be back next season. He wasn't used much this year, but he will be one of the team's high scorers during the i947-48 basketball season. Special Note-Nothing has been said of the most important man with the squad thus far, Coach Bill Tracy. He is the likable and genial man from Room l l l. All season long he sweated it out from the bench while the team told him to worry about nothin', Doctor. No one ever so richly deserved as much credit as Mr. Tracy does. For three years he worked untiringly with the boys on this team and developed a New England Champion. We, the class of '47 take our hats off to a fine coach, gentleman, and teacher, and wish him the best of luck with his teams to come. Individual Scoring Records Average Name N.V.L. Others C.l.A.C. Their superb work in leading the many cheers at almost every game contributed greatly toward the moral of the football and basketball players. This boost in moral was responsible for many of our victories. At the Thanksgiving Day football game with Crosby, a group of students were organized to act as a pep squad. This pep squad, led by the cheer- leaders, paraded on the field at half time carrying a Leavenworth banner and cheering. The girls also did exceptionally well in leading the cheers during our most successful Basketball season, as well as in the state tournament in New Haven. The squad consists of thirteen girls, three of whom are baton twirlers. There are seven girls who wear the traditional red and white suits, while the remaining three have skirts and sweaters. Pictured above, the girls are Cfirst row-left to rightiz Marie Genovese fcaptaini, Lois Schilling, Betty Vrotocoe, Jane Simpson. lSecond rowl: Louise DeSantis, Marie DePalma, Barbara Cook, Antoinette Silco, Shirley Boisvert, Joseph Salvatore, Lucille Drozd, June Asplund, Viola Verrastro. GIRLS SWIMMING Four years ago, we entered Leavenworth, and we looked forward to our swimming lessons. As Freshmen, under the capable direction of Miss Meehan, we learned the simple back stroke and how to float. We were also lectured on the dangers of the water and the value of knowing how to swim. During our Sophomore year, we mastered a few of the more difficult strokes. We learned, especially, the side stroke and the crawl which nabled us to swim longer distances. In our Junior year many happy hours were spent in the pool because we had lost all fear of the water. After three years we were veterans, Miss Meehan had taught us the essentials of life saving. We spent our time in the pool practicing on each other. We, th e Senior girls, wish to thank Miss Meehan for our enjoyable years in swimming. GIRLS BASKETBALL AND VOLLEY BALL Each year in the gym was more successful than the previous. Our first year was spent for the most part in trying to learn the fundamentals of basketball and volley ball. After gaining the fundamentals we attempted a few slow games. By our Sophomore year we were able to play a successful game of volley ball, We played and learned it quickly because it was not as difficult as the other games. Each week we practiced more and more and became more adept at volley ball and badminton. Our Junior year was taken up in practicing basketball. Constant prac- tice make us play a better game. Now, as Seniors, we are able to play these games successfully. We can look back to the last three years and feel proud of what we have accomplished under the able direction and untiring efforts of Miss Meehan. SPORTS EXTRA During our stay at Leavenworth, from l943 to l947, some excellent athletes have been produced from the various sports here in schoolr We would not venture to name an All-Star team for any of the sports, as there would be some to disagree on the selections. lnstead of causing dis- contentment, we will list the names of the fellows who were named to the football, basketball, and baseball All-City teams.
