E FOREWORD In the years to come, all of us at one time or another, will look back on our high school days, the period many peple call the happiest time of their lives. Through our class book as though a magic glass, back over the years we shall recall with greater clarity and distinctinctness those happy events, gold memories, and friendships which we will always treasure. Theiefore, as a fitting record of our school days, we have done our best to prepare this book to play its proper role. Many good features of last year's book are retained in this volume, as we did not feel it right to endanger the success of the book for the sake of novelty. However, changes have been made to improve this edition. There are several new features: one, a pictorial review of typical jobs from machine shop, another, also pictures, features various teachers in characteristic attitudes. The arrangement of the class pictures has been changed. This year instead of grouping the pictures in pai1's on each side of the page, they have been arranged alternately. This was done because it was felt it would lend more individuality to the setup. As in last year's book, we have the embossed cover, and for our cover illustration, a lathe symbolizing production for national defense, our theme. We are happy to have this occasion to thank the Republican and American for use of various pictures, Mr. Mack, Mr. Blanchard, and Miss Gemmill for their invaluable aid in making up this year's Liber. .-2.. E THEME After a long hibernation, induced by a false sense of security, America has awakened to the fact that the world is not yet ready to live in peace, that the last war did not end all wars, and therefore something must be done and done quickly to insure freedom in the land of the free. ln this modern day courage alone will not win wars, this has been proved. The country with the best mechanized army generally wins, and one trained technician in the factory is worth a dozen soldiers in the field. The production line is our first line of defense. Leavenworth has an important part to play in national defense, therefore Leavenworth and National Defense is our theme. Founded in 1918, after the last war had shown the need for pre- vocational schools, Leavenworth has finally come into its own. Never, since the opening of our school, has there been a year so full of opportunities for graduates. Answering the call for partially trained labor, Tech students will find employment in the skilled trades, fulfilling their own ambitions and at the same time doing their bit in the Arensal of Democracy. Nor is the opportunity to serve our country confined to the boy graduates, large as their number is. Both in our hospitals and our homes, girl graduates of Leavenworth will make important cont1'i- butions to the welfare and stability of America. Leavenworth High is a small cog but an important one in the American defense scheme. ..14-- WW--4-we 790A fm '41 IOHN IAIVLES ABLAMSKY Sbue Slocum Whenever Sbue comes marching down the halls, many a feminine heart skips a jump, but he never seems to notice because he is probably thinking of some machine shop job that has him stumped. Three thousand people packed the State Armory on Field Street, February 14, 1941, to witness this great event. This year's general chairman was James Coleman. John A. Dillon appointed the various committees which made the carnival a success. The entertainment for the evening consisted of a basketball game, vaudeville, and dancing. Mr. Tracy's varsity team went out to defeat Mr. Reiger's Alumni in a good basketball game. Following this game came Harry X. Cashin's entertainers, whose acts were en- joyed by all who attended. Timmie Crowe's Orchestra furnished music for the dancing, which lasted the rest of the evening. Refreshments for the evening were handled by a committee with Miss Elizabeth Brophy as chairman. The purpose of this Carnival was to raise funds for the support of athletics at Leavenworth. We wish to thank both faculty and students for the splendid co- operation that helped to make the Leavenworth Athletic Carnival a great success. Sirica Rs S N 7ech Jam 'W FOOTBALL This year Leavenworth had a football squad equal to the best in all its history. Under the splendid coaching of Mr. Tracy, comparatively new to the job, the team came through in fine shape, winning three of the seven games played. Lead by their able captain, Lazeski, the Tech team broke loose to defeat the strong Crosby team for the first time in Leavenworth's history by the score of 8 to 6. Before meeting Wilby, disaster struck at Gilbert. Beginning the second half, the kick-off was received by Lazeski, who made a mad dash up the field, was soon stopped. There was a pile-up. Some one was hurt. Who was it? For a minute we couldn't tell, then it was found that Lazeski had broken his leg and was unable to play for the remainder of the season. This great loss was felt by both team- mates and students of the school. Without the captain, the Tech men went to meet Wilby. Played a brilliant game but were defeated by the score of 20-0. The students of Leavenworth High School extend their appre- ciation to Mr. Tracy for his excellent job of coaching. Games Leavenworth participated in were as follows: Leavenworth - - 6 Shelton - - - 0 Leavenworth - 7 Manchester - 12 Leavenworth - - 0 Warren Harding - 1 9 Leavenworth - - 12 Gilbert - - 6 Leavenworth - 0 Milford - - 18 Leavenworth - 0 Wilby 20 Leavenworth - 8 Crosby 6 ,34- E Cl 135 3 QI 7ech Aim 'Aff BASKETBALL Although not very successful during the past year, the basket- ball squad has had high spirits. They met some strong teams and fought vigorously to defeat them. People will say they lost because they were no good. Well, we know for a fact that these boys are all good ball players but, the class A competition given by various strong teams was too great for the Tech basketeers. Next year the basketball team will lose this year's captain and co-captain, Tom Caisse and Nick Santopie-tro, but we feel sure Mr. Tracy can find men to equal them, and if he does, Tech will turn out another team that will go in fighting, no matter how great the odds. Again this year, both Mr. Tracy and the team should be com- plimented on their splendid showing. The teams the Tech squad met were as follows: 10 ,...,....,,. Meehan, we have successfully completed a four year season in gymnastics. Starting from our Freshman year, inexperienced, yet eager to learn, a large number of our classmates took an active part in the intra-class practice games. These practice games, consisting of volley- ball, basketball, badminton and swimming, were held every Wednes- day afternoon, at which time we demonstrated our considerably improved ability. During the years, we have had the privilege of attending several gymnastic meets at Meriden and Crosby High Schools. At these meets various games were played and all those who partook in these games enjoyed themselves immensely. In this our Senior year, every girl has put forth her best effort to gain a profitable year of gymnastical knowledge. Having become accomplished players of basketball, badminton, volleyball, and having mastered various difficult and fanciful swimming strokes, many of the girls have received emblems for their untiring efforts. At the close of the year, we Senior girls were the guests at a party given by Miss Meehan. This brought our four years of sports to a joyous end. We, the Senior Class of 1941, want to extend to Miss Meehan our sincere thanks for her untiring efforts and interest in making our 'tsports career a successful one. oem-L SMB K You AQ wmv TQ 30 To Q s 'V Was. This year Lawrence Dowd was Leavenworth's first drum major in the school band. The Band presented its 16th annual concert on February 18th, and the Orchestra presented its 22nd annual concert on April 22nd, This year the Orchestra visited the Metropolitan Opera and heard the opera Carmen, an event which was looked forward to for a long time. The Seniors of Leavenworth wish to thank sincerely Mr. Floyd C. Evans for so successfully organizing a Band and Orchestra which has made every student of Leavenworth proud of its activities and its name. EN TH E VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club was formed in the year of 1938. Its purpose was to bring together the boys who have played sports on the varsity teams of our school. It was also formed to let the boys get better acquainted to develop a more friendly understanding among them. Also it helped foster a more sportsman-like attitude toward the players of other schools which they played. Only the boys that have played on the varsity teams and have received a letter can be members. Faculty adviser for the club was Mr. Jacob Reiger. Officers of the club were: President .,.......,,. The only requirement is a passing grade in the last three years of high school mathematics. This year the Club has had many recreational and educational meetings, through the expert and au- thorative guidance of Mr. E. C. Kilbourne, head of the Math Depart- ment. By using various mathematical fundamentals, many useful instruments, such as the angle mirror, angle trisetor, the hypsometer and many others were constructed. At the end of the school year the club members discussed plans for an indoor entertainment. The Tech Hi-Y started bcak in the year 1938. It consisted of twelve members, but has rapidly increased its membership to twenty-four members. In its infancy, the Tech Hi-Y was very little known to the out- side public. Now it is getting mature and the outside world is learning of its good work. The Tech Hi-Y participates in most all the sports activities held at the Central Y.M.C.A. They won the softball crown of the Hi-Y League in the year of 1940. It was also twice runners-up in volleyball and basketball and once in track. In social activities, the Tech Hi-Y was very successful. It helped the T. C. A. and L. L. A. to put over three dances which were held in 1940 and 1941. These dances were very successful. Officers Sal Coviello ,...,.....,,........,..,.,,... .........., . An orchestra whose music was fitted to the type of dancing, lent a more enhancing atmosphere to the gymnasium. The S. D. C. was a success due to the excellent guid- ance of Mr. Sheehy, faculty adviser. The Class of '41 hopes that the S. D. The Seniors of Leavenworth responded well to practice on Tuesday nights at the Crosby assembly hall. Including the students from the three high schools, there were approximately sixty to eighty members. From Leavenworth there were 100 mem- bers. This is considered very good in view of the fact that there was not a Glee Club last year. The Leavenworth attendance was as follows: Shirley Weaving Ralph Mehemit Thomas Caisse Arnold Blatherwick William Knightly Paul Lapira John Scott Toddo Manzolli Frank Salvatore A.
