Truman Youngberg, who we think has been outstanding in his con- tributions to our school and our community. Mr. Youngberg has unselfishly devoted his 7 years in Leavenworth to the development and better appreciation of music . Bom in Brady, Nebraska, Mr. Younberg graduated from Gothenburg High School in Nebraska. Following high school, he attended the Conn National Music School in Chicago for a year on a music scholarship. He later attended Kearney State Teachers College, K e a r ne y, Nebraska, and received his A.B. Degree from Highlands University, Las Vegas, New Mexico. He also attended the University of Washing- ton one summer and did further work at College of the Pacific at Stockton, California, another summer. He and his wife, Odessa, were married December 26, 1946, at Azwell, Washington. Mr. Youngberg teaches all instruments, but especially likes the paino and baritone horn. One of his special interests is attending summer music camps of which he has attended four. His hobbies include hiking, traveling, and taking colored slides. While in Leavenworth, Mr. Youngberg has been active in the community in addition to teaching the Senior, Junior, and Beginning Bands, the Senior, Junior, and Jr. High Choruses, and training and accompaning soloists and ensembles. He is the organist and choir director of the Methodist Church. He is active in the Lions Club and started the Leavenworth Twirling Camp which is sponsored by the Lions Club. He help- ed organize the North Central Music District and was president for two years. In 1952, Mr. Youngberg received the Civic Service Award of the Eagles for his contribution to the community. In X954 he was honored in The School Musician , the official magazine of the American School Band Director's Association, in a monthly feature, They are making America Musical . The Lecapi staff would also like to commend the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club for bringing and organizing the National Ski Jumping Championships, which brought recognition to our community. FUREWORD We would like to think all the teachers, students, and business men and women that have contributed their time effort to make this edition a success. We want to express our appreciation, for without their help this wolrld have been impossible. If, in reading this book, you recall some of the happy times you have had at L.H.S . then our purpose in publishing this annual has been fulfilled. T HE STAFF FACULTY M C Strauss C C Scofreld Xxx. If I .v Rf' i SENIOR HISTORY A page in history was made when, in the fall in 1943, the Class of 1955 began its long climb up the ladder of education. Of those starting school at Leavenworth, only I2 out of the original class, Edyth Hendrickson, Bill Bradshaw, Doris Couch, Bill Boning, Merwyn Pliss, Richard English, Clarence Ostella, Shirley Stegeman, Iean Wisemore, Frank Motteler, Roy Parton, and Barbara Ellis, remained to graduate with the Class of 55. During the next8 years, eleven new members were acquired: Irene Webb, Sharon, Coffee, Sherry Speer, Lee Baker, Rheeta Pliss, Sharon DeGroot, Zola Leapard, Jim Monesmith, Ro- land Wisemore, Carol Porter, and Bob Haugh. Dee King, Carol Porter, Rose Alyce McGahuey, Troy Myers, and Irene Webb moved a- way only to return to graduate with us. Eighth grade graduation was a big day for us with the American Legion awards for Out- standing Girl and Boy going to Sherry Speer and Roy Parton. The next fall we were given the official welcome from the Seniors and were properly initiated . That year only one new member stayed to graduate with us: Tom VanGelder. The next year, as Sophomores, we could relax for we were no longer strangers to L.H.S . We sponsored the annual Freshman-Sophomore picnic at Recreation Park. Jack Mayfield was the only addition to the class that year. The time had finally comel We were now officially known as upperclassmen. Under the sponsorship of Miss Schnackel and Mr. Jones we gave the annual Prom and Banquet. The theme was South Pacific , with the Gym decorated dramatically with 5, 000 sq. feet of fish net, silver sea creatures, a painted mural, orchids, and a refreshment bar . Orchid leis were flown in from Hawaii to honor the king and queen. Dal Hope, Donna Gaddis, and Judy Clark became new members of the Class of 55. The fall of 1954 brought us back as Seniors. Our last year in high school was highlighted by many wonderful events, the first being Homecoming and our Senior play. Hillbilly Wed- din '. In the spring we were honored at the Junior-Senior banquet and prom in the festive mood of Gay Paree. Datmting superstition, on Friday, May 13, we courageous Seniors took our Senior Sneak to Lake Wilderness. Bacculureate and Commencement climaxed the achievement of our 12 years of study. Following the graduation exercises, the Seniors and their friends were honored at a pany given by the organizations of the community. As we leave the peaceful harbors of L.H.S. , we look back upon our fond memories, with the hope that those who follow us will have a clear, vivid picture of their experiences. BASKETBALL The Grizzlie squad won only a few games, but theywere a spirited and hard trying group that fought their hardest till the finish of the game to bring home a win for Leavenworth. At the end of the Basketball season the Grizzlies pushed hard to gain admission into the county tournament, and they again pushed hard after they had won entrance, but only to lose by a few points. In the game with Peshastin they lost by only 6 points: 21-I5, and again the in Manson game they lost by only a few points 48-51, but the strategy used in the two games were not only unique but also a bit comical to watch. The ski team this year ofhigh school bo s was sponsored by the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club. The boys are members of the Junior Ski Club. The five boys didn't participate as a team very often. They enteredthree meetsand took second place in the Leavenworth High School Invitational 3-way meet, fourth place in the Wenatchee High School 4-way meet and eleventh place in the Betta Cup meet. Most of the boys entered different meets as individuals. They did very good in their meets. Jimmy Brennen is the only boy on the team that earned a letter this year. Although the other boys tried, they didn't place enough times to qualify them for a letter. Ben Cottman and Duane Brown were their coaches. They worked with the boys quite often and took them on some of their ski trips. The Leavenworth Winter Sports Club was responsible for bringing the National Ski Jumping Championships to Leavenworth in 1955. This event took the place of the annual Ski Jumping Tournament they hold each year in Leavenworth. There were top skiers from all over the United States and Canada. It drew a record crowd of approximately 7,000 people. The boys from the team, along with many others, were packed on the hill for this event. Since the Nationals took the place of the annual Ski Tournament in Leavenworth, the Ski Roy- alty, instead of representing the local tournament, were chosen to represent the Nationals, this year. They were Senior girs picked b a committee made up of three men from town. The girls were chosen from a group of eight girils. The royalty were: Queen Sharon Coffee, Prince sses Sherry Speer and Judy Clark and an alternate, Dee King. X N Q-we-'-e t:1. The Girls' Club held a very lovely tea in honor of their mothers in the Spring, with Valentines as the theme. A small corsage was given to each mother upon her arrival at school. After a short program, the mothers were served refreshments in the Home Economics room. This year because of the bond issue on the swimming Pool, the President of the Girls' Club, Sherry Speer, and the President of the Boys' Club, Troy Myers, held a debate in front of the Student Body, presenting the facts for and against the issue. After the debate, the discussion was open to the Student Body. A new practice was started this year by the Girls' Club.. Despite the late snow-fall that hindered and cut short valuable practices of the Grizzlies, they were highly respected by their opponents. Retuming letterman and star pitcher for the Grizzlies was Senior Roy Parton who was accredited with four wins. Coach Siler instilled into the I8 boys that turned out for the baseball squad, confidence and ex- perience which added greatly to the outcome of the Grizzlies scoring or runs tally. The greatest asset the Grizzlie baseball squad had was their spirit, which kept them hustling and trying until the last ball was tossed. Tom VanGelder Ii!!
