We consider ourselves as mere raw products when We enter this phase of our learning career, but as We Weave the threads of our life through our studies, with the help of our older and more experienced advisors, We realize that We are gradually becoming a more nearly finished product, able to assume a responsible place in our demo- cratic society. Though We have portrayed seniors as the finished product, We realize all too well that our education is far from complete. It is up to us, therefore, to continue to learn and profit from our experiences throughout our life. Then we were just orphans-unwelcome, unhappy, and uncivilized. After struggling along for a few days, we elected Vernon Hill as our president and tried to adapt ourselves to our surroundings. Our most outstanding venture that year was a trip to the Governor's Mansion and to Duke University. It seemed that in 1946 everyone came back to o1' L.H.S. with the idea of getting into something. Sometimes the things were not so bad. Anyway, our class acquired the reputation of being mean and lazy. Mr. Snodderly, who became our principal that year, saw to it that we had plenty to keep us busy. A new schedule made possible extra activities and many new projects were started. We honestly believe we helped a little. That year Joe Dix was our president, and Virginia Bailey and Sherman Earles were our Student Council Representa- tives. In '47 our class returned full of pep and energy. Nearly all of us remember this as our happiest year. We were into everything but neither took nor were given any responsibilities. We learned a lot, however. The dream of a real newspaper and a bigger and better annual were realized. Projects were also underway for other im- provements in our school. Along with good grades, we strived for good school spirit. Betty Gentry, a capable leader, was chosen as president. One hundred juniors returned in the fall of '49 all set for work. More of us held key positions in all of the activities around school. Some of our most outstanding class- mates that year were Betty Gentry, who won the World Peace Medal and the oration contest, Denny Ivie, who won the Hymn Playing contest and a history medalg and to prove that our class had beauty and brains, Carolyn Edwards was chosen as Miss Leaks- ville High of 1949. Then, too, our class was well represented in sports. Numa Martin, Bud Roberts, Winkie,' Hoover, Doodie Black, Goof Gillespie, and Helen New were outstanding. This year Numa Martin was our president. Our biggest and most successful project was the Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance. The story of our class ends in our senior year-a year into which we shall try to crowd a great deal. The honor and privilege of being our senior class president was given to one of our most outstanding leaders, Betty Gentry. Joe Dix was elected president of the Student Council. Donald Umstead was chosen as editor-in-chief of the school paper and Carroll Butler was made editor-in-chief of the Weaver. Other outstanding students of our senior year included Mona Fulcher, the D.A.R. Good Citizen, Bill Martin, head of several stage activities, and Bertillia Aheron, head majorette. To the principal, teachers, advisors, and to all of our patrons we wish to express our thanks for the numerous ways in which they have aided us during our high school days. We especially appreciate Mr. Sasser's untiring work to get our high school in the Southern Association of Secondary High Schools and Colleges. Although we look forward with pleasure to the Junior-Senior Prom, the Senior Prom. and our diplomas, we are not entirely glad to leave. Most prominent of the victories was a 12-6 win over the powerful Martinsville Bulldogs, a team that defeated us 25-0 in 48. Another feather in the cap of the Red Devils was a 13-13 tie game with Hanes, a team that defeated Mt. Airy the following week. Other triumphs were posted over Guilford, Hargrave Military Academy, Walkertown, and Draper. Defeats were suffered at the hands of Mineral Springs, Reidsville, Gray and Mt. Airy. Several Red Devil players gained conference recognition by their excellent play on the gridiron. Perhaps the most outstanding performer was Revelle Morrison, a big, burly fullback, who was a unanimous choice for all conference. Cleo 1 Wickham, Billy Fulton and Junior Gillespie were mentioned for the all conference team. W'infred Hoover, Numa Martin, Junior Roberts, Bob Moore, Ray Martin, Kenny Harter, James Black, Clay Hall, Charles Mitchell, Lawrence Smith, jimmy Wright, Dicky jones, Ralph Via, Gene Underwood and several other players deserve credit for a remarkable season. The Junior Varsity football team under Coach Bridgewater turned in an unblemished season of three wins and no losses in 1949. The J. Vfs opened the season with a hard fought 6-0 win over Martinsville, then journeyed to Reids- ville and on a rain-soaked field squeezed out a 13-6 victory on two long-pass plays. In a return game at Leaksville the Red Imps kept the slate clean by downing Reidsville 13-0. 68 Some of the boys that were instru- mental in the team's success and are look- ed on to carry a large share of the re- sponsibility in varsity ball next year, are: Jimmy Wright, Charles Mitchell, Gene Underwood, J. Last year's Rockingham County and Journal Sentinal Champions are continu- ing their winning ways again in 1950 under the masterful guidance of Coach Raymond Rhodes. Since Rhodes took over the coaching reigns four years ago, his teams have been top contenders throughout this section and again this year it appears that his team will be very much in the running come tournament time. The boys team has not lost a game in the local gym in three seasons, which is quite a record. Leading scorer for the Red Devil Quint is Phil Brown--currently averag- ing nineteen points per game. Others who usually rank high are: Bud Roberts, hook shot artist, Winfred Hoover, 6' 3 pivot star and Numa Martin, brilliant ball hawk and playmaker of the team. Donald Smith, pint-sized guard, aids with his clever floor play and defensive work. Last year under the capable leadership of Coach Anna Mae Tucker, Leaksville Girls won the first trophy the girls had won in a number of years. Although Coach Tucker was new to the coaching business, having just finished college, she has produced two of the best teams L.H.S. has had. In spite of the fact that the team lost four players off the starting line-up last year, the team has made a come-back and has a better and stronger team than before. The high honors for the season go to the guards, who have worked hard to Win these games. One of the outstanding guards for the year, and the one showing the most improvement is Wilma Clark, a veteran of last year's second string. She stands 5' 72 and weighs 128 lbs. With the fine support of Dot Brown, 70 Ruby Turner, Boody Martin, Mattie Hawkins, and Peggy Nelson, the guards have really done a good job. Outstand- ing for the forwards has been Joan Sturtevant, a newcomer to the team. Joan stands 5' 62 and weighs 129 lbs. Although lacking in experience, Joan has done a swell job and we hope she will do even better in the next few years. Back- ed by other forwards such as Patsy McCollum, Barbara Lawson, Betty I,ou Ferguson and Helen New, the forwards have done some excellent playing. It is said that boys basketball is more interest- ing, but you,ve missed all the excitement if you didn't see the I..H.S. girls in action.
