't c s 6 st 'ht m ' Xxxxxsgsf 4 November 1964 Naples, Italy Greetings to all our Families and Friendsg Here we are back in Naples, this time for an extended two-week stay. We are in the inner-harbor, tied up alongside the destroyer tender SHENANDOAH for a routine period of upkeep, having arrived on the 26th of October and scheduled to depart on 9 November. Our operations prior to arrival were typical of those about which Ihave written previously. There was one schedule change, however, which worked in our favor and was a pleasant surprise. After departing Athens from a two-day visit on 7 October - and having in prospect many more days of sea assignments, we were turned around and ordered back into Athens on L6 October for a six day visit. Now we were able to examine more leisurely those parts of this beautiful city with which we had previously made but brief acquaintance. Leaving on 22 October, the time in transit through familiar waters passed quickly until we arrived here in Naples. You will be hearing many things from your LEAHY men about this area. Tours to Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum have been available. Side trips - - and you have probably received post-cards from some of these --- to Sorrento, Salerno and Capri are being made. And IIIOSE popular of all are the overnight tours to Rome and the Vatican. Here in Naples, many members of our crewxasre tr community project by contributing their time and s, renovation ofa home for crippled boys, the Casa If ready, will house about 35 unfortunate Italian youn As for our f L 'n, t ere is scheduled. On IO Novembc ' fr we arrive in Leghorn fc you can almost see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Ani takes only about an hour. uture in the Mediterranea h rn Further along on our schedule are visits to Barce- deployment with the SIXTH Fleet, the LEAHY and l Mediterranean Sea, from the easternmost areas of th Now perhaps some incidental information may be t 1. Of course, 48 days to go to Charleston arrival. 2. For information on exact hour of arrival and whei don't start calling until after 15 December. 3. The crew has been in a continuous state of turno other assignments and we have received some 25 4. We have been most fortunate in having with us for the entire cruise thus far the Squadron Chaplain and the Squadron Medical Officer. ' 5. Since we left Charleston, the LEAHY has been underway for 26,910 miles. 6. At the last weighing-in, L35 pounds of babies were born to LEAHY families. They arrived in 18 delighfflll bundles, 8 male and LO female, averaging about 7 pounds 8 ounces each. During this next month, the LEAI-LY will observe Thanksgiving Day underway. We would like to join with you now, in advance, in our thanksgiving that this part of the world has moved back a step from the precipi-ce of disaster and remains at peace. And we add to our thanksgiving, prayers for our brethern on the Ofilef Side of the globe where the struggle for human freedom still remains at violent issue. At this time of counting of blessings, you are all in our thoughts. My best wishes to you all. Sincerely, JMQQ.. f Steven N. ANASTASION Captain, U.S. Navy Commanding Officer
