'lx go!-G 4 September 1964 Xu' At Sea Greetings to all our Families and Friends: We were quite firmly tied up at Genoa when I last wrote in early August Since then the LEA h . , HY as been much in evidence around this historic Mediterranean Sea. Since leaving Genoa, on the Thirteenth of August, We have participated in fleet operations between the Balearic Islands fMallorca and Menorca, and Sardinia, supported amphibious exercises south of Sardinia, roamed the Tyrrhe nian Sea, passed through the Strait of Bonifacio between Sard' ' d C ' ' ' mia an orsica, and visited our second liberty port, anchoring at Theoule, France on 21 August. Theoule is a beautiful, but small and quite sleepy little summer resort. However, since Cannes and Nice were close by, there seemed to be little difficulty finding suitable activity. Many of the crew took advantage of local tours in the area, including one that visited the town of Grasse, famous as the perfume manufacturing center of southern France. The tour included stops at the wholesale shops of several factories. Many of you can look forward to wonderful souvenirs from Grasse. Another source of souvenirs was a rather unusual event that took place on board while at anchor. The Supply Department arranged for a full scale fashion show, including several real live French models, modeling a complete line of ladies wear. The only item prohibited and deleted from the show was the modeling of the most recent fashions in bathing suits which ha ' ' ve received much noteriety of late. Nevertheless, the rest of the show was permitted and conducted, appropriately, on the fantail. We departed Theoule on 26 August, somewhat earlier than ex ect d d f p e , an a ter coming down between Corsica and .Elba, passed through the Strait of Mes ' b sina etween the toe of Italy and Sicily. We are now carrying On routine operations and exercises in the eastern end of the Mediterranean. As you know, the Sixth Fleet is a sea going and self-sustaining organization. We receive mail, spare parts, fuel, stores, fresh and frozen provision - virtually all our needs - while at sea. Refrigerated ships, tankers, special aircraft, helicopter delivery service - all this is part of the fleet and its operations. You can understand that it is imperative that such replenishment be conducted promptly and with rapidity so that replenishment evolutions do not inhibit normal fleet operations. We all work hard to improve our techniques and performance to reduce replenishment times. Up until a few days ago, we were improving considerabl b y, ut certainly were no world beaters There has bee a natural competition between the forward d f . n an a ter replenishment stations, with the after station having a slight but steady edge. Then on 1 September we went alongside th , C CHUCKAWAN for fuel. Here the forward station really came together and set a new CHUCKAWA ' ' ' N record for taking and rigging the fuel hose. Their time went from 12 minutes two days earlier down to less than 2 minutes The f l . a ter station performed in their consistently exce lent manner with a time of a little over three minutes. So much for life at sea now. The weather durin th' ' g is entire cruise has been unusually pleasant, thus far. In Naples, we bid farewell and offer our best wishes to fourteen first class Midshipmen who have been part of our ship's company, in all respects, for the past six weeks.
