Vo eyboM It's not over till the fat lady sings was the theme, combined with dreams, goals, hardwork and determination, which led the Varsity Volleyball team to the title of Upstate lllini-East Conference Champions. Two early season conference losses made the team's dreams, which they had set as goals, look dim. The girls, however, practiced hard, believed in themselves and worked together as a team with the belief that the conference title could still be theirs because the title would not be decided until the final games were played and tallied By half-way through the season the school, parents and the whole sporting community were filled with the Lady Demons' winning spirit and pride. After their last conference game, topping all others with a 12- 2 conference record, the team celebrated with hugs and tears of joy from parents, teachers and fans with Happy Meals at McDonalds. Other achievements included finishing second in the Leaf River Tournament, third in the Christian Life Tournament and winning the consolation championship at Franklin Center. The team shattered 16 of 20 school records which are kept At the banquet the following awards were handed out: Captain: Jill Swanson, Co-Captains: Kelli Rummel and Donna Cooper; Most Valuable Player: Jill Swanson; Most Improved Player: Jean Campbell; Miss Hustle: Debra Poggioli and Kelli Rummel. Jill Swanson was chosen as a unanimous all-conference selection, Kelli Rummel and Donna Cooper were named to the second all- conference team and Jean Campbell was given honorable mention.
