Putting ft f M Together Leaf Riven, ffS. Leaf Riven, IL Opening 1 A Pant Of A IV 10 This year the Le Ri Co staff chose the theme Putting the Pieces Together for the 1988 annual. Any complex object, system or team is made up of many pieces - pieces which interact in a positive way with each other. For example, in clothing the three-piece suit is an excellent garment, but it takes many pieces of material to make up each part of the suit. In essence this is the way Leaf River High School is. Many smaller parts make up each larger one. The students, the academics, the athletics, the activities, the faculty, personnel and administration - all the pieces that make Leaf River High School, like a fine Harris Tweed. 2 Opening But Of Tutiu Homecoming 1987 was capped off with the dance and coronation of the king and queen, following a week full of contests and activities. The ultimate goal of each class was to win as many points as possible in order to claim the Spirit Championship. After the points were totalled in the scooter race, the chubby bunnies contest, the volleyball tournament, the tug-of-war, the lip sync and the float competition, the Senior Class was named the winner Top 1987 Homecoming Queen Jill Swanson and Homecoming King Steve Stukenberg Middle: 1987 Homecoming Court. The team grew to twenty-two players, the largest Leaf River soccer team to date. The team scored its first ever goal against Freeport and the team won its homecoming game against Rockford Lutheran 4-3. This was not a high scoring season or a winning season, but none the less it was an important step in the building process. Through the struggle of this season, the team met challenges put in front of them and everyone grew to become better soccer players and stronger individuals. Team members and their positions were as follows: Strikers — Nick Heidenreich. James Kump, Steve Stukenberg, Rick Bicksler, Scott Josephitus. Scott Slack; Full Backs — Joe Bull. James Russell. Dallas Turner. Nick Wells, Scott Grabins. Dan Groom, Jon Kump; Mid Fielders — Jess Bull. Steve Harris. Greg McKay. Mark Penn, Allen Feary, Ron Harris. Pete Newsom. Shane Wells. Two early season conference losses made the team's dreams, which they had set as goals, look dim. The girls, however, practiced hard, believed in themselves and worked together as a team with the belief that the conference title could still be theirs because the title would not be decided until the final games were played and tallied By half-way through the season the school, parents and the whole sporting community were filled with the Lady Demons' winning spirit and pride. After their last conference game, topping all others with a 12- 2 conference record, the team celebrated with hugs and tears of joy from parents, teachers and fans with Happy Meals at McDonalds. Other achievements included finishing second in the Leaf River Tournament, third in the Christian Life Tournament and winning the consolation championship at Franklin Center. The team shattered 16 of 20 school records which are kept At the banquet the following awards were handed out: Captain: Jill Swanson, Co-Captains: Kelli Rummel and Donna Cooper; Most Valuable Player: Jill Swanson; Most Improved Player: Jean Campbell; Miss Hustle: Debra Poggioli and Kelli Rummel. Cartoonists was James Russell, and photographers were James Kump. Tom Roush, and Rich Myers. Advisor was Sheila Bolen. The Leaflet was published once a month in the local newspaper, the Tempo. The staff was responsible for writing all articles and doing the layouts. The staff received good community response and was praised by the publishers. It is hoped that these seniors have begun a new journalistic tradition at Leaf River High School. The other journalism club, the annual staff, consisted of Jess Bull, Tom Craven, Tim Roush, Steve Harris, Joe Bull, Cathy Harris, Jami Cook, and Tanya Zellers. The staff attended a yearbook workshop in the fall. This year more color pages were added to the Le-Ri-Co. Annaul Leaflet 31 Mode Ttial The mock trial team is shown taking a break from the action during their competition at Sangamon State University in Springfield. From left to right are Nick Heidenreich. Joe Bull, Dallas Turner, Scott Grabins, Jess Bull, Ron Harris and Tom Craven. This year several students from Leaf River High School participated in several mock trial competitions. The mock trial is a case based upon a real case that the Illinois State Bar Association sends out to 42 schools involved throughout the state. This year the case involved burglary by an individual pleading insanity because of a head trauma received as a child. In the “court'' the state called a police officer, the defendant's best friend and a psychiatrist while the defense called the defendant's English teacher and its own psychiatrist. The main reason for this competition is to arouse interest of young people in the law and to show how a courtroom actually runs. The cast of characters included Joe Bull, Jess Bull (attorneys), Dallas Turner (attorney and witness), Ron Harris, Nick Heidenreich, Scott Grabins and Tom Craven (witnesses). Advisor for the team was history teacher Ron Lessen and the legal advisor for the team was Assistant State's Attorney Jim Black. The team competed in the Ogle County tournament to defend its 1987 title as champions against a team from Stillman Valley. Unfortunately in a very surprising decision, Stillman Valley was declared the winner. The team also traveled to the state tournament where in the first round the Leaf River prosecution took on the defense of Oak Park, a school which went on to place in the final eight. The defense of Leaf River took on Harlan High School's prosecution the next day. In this second trial Leaf River won what was considered to be a state's case as the team was scored points on their legal knowledge and elocution. Congratulations goes out to the entire team and Mr. Lessen for another successful year. LR Law 32 Mock Trial Cotif tMCA CluMpLOHi! What President put the first bathtub in the White House? This question and hundreds of others were asked of this year's Leaf River Academic Bowl team. Several hundreds, at least, were answered correctly giving the team another very successful year. The first competition was at Durand and the season ended with the state competition at Stillman Valley. Other competitions included the WSDR radio competition at which seniors Jess Bull, Joe Bull and Dallas Turner took the team to the third round, earning $400. Of course the highlight of the year was the jUpstate Illini East conference tourney at which the team defeated all competition to bring home the championship trophy. The team members included freshmen Ron Harris and Tracy Bolen; sophomores Scott Grabins, Jon Kump and Shahla Werner; junior Cathy Harris; and seniors Jess Bull, Joe Bull, Steve Harris, James Kump and Dallas Turner. Oh by the way — the answer to the question is President Millard Fillmore! Academic Bowl 33 Monday Band Members of this year's marching band were as follows: Row 1 L. to R.: J. Swanson, J, Cook, R. Under the direction of teacher Bob Nelson, the project was a way for the students to show their true school spirit. Students James Russell and Scott Zittle were the artists on the center drawings of the Demon mascot. Other students participating in the drawing and painting were Jon Kump, Heather Jacob, Kelly Endsley, David Slack, Cathy Harris. Dean Tucker, George Boomgarden, Tim Morris, Mike Jacob. James Kump and Ron Harris. Other teachers who helped out were Terri Nelson, Greg Olson, and Lori Riemer. The Demon chosen to put on the wall was traced back to a sock doll that a 1959 LR graduate had made to hang on the mirror of her car. The addition of the Demon mascot and the two-tone blue stripes running along the gym walls, plus the “Go Big Blue logos were certainly a positive improvement. Faculty 39 Facujfcj U Actum 40 Faculty Snaps Frosh-Soph Basketball The Frosh-Soph basketball team was filled with many ups and downs as the team fought through suspensions, ineligibilities, and low numbers. The team worked hard all season on mastering the basic skills of the game since many of the players had missed a season or two as they moved up the ranks. The team finished with a 5 - 14 overall record but ended the season with a spectacular final two weeks skillfully surprising each team they had played previously and capturing the Consolation Championship trophy at the Franklin Center Tournament. Team members included Danny Groom, Dan Zittle, Jon Kump, Scott Grabins, Rick Bicksler, Scott Slack, Scott Josephitis, and Shane Wells. Basketball 41 42 Basketball The Leaf River boys' basketball team suffered through some difficult times in 1987- 88. The senior-dominated team could manage only one win in 23 outings. Despite the record the team played almost every opponent tough, losing in the final stanza of many games. The season was unique in that it saw game delays caused by the absence of officials and a shattered backboard. George Boomgarden and Tim Morris were selected as captains of the team. Boomgarden also received the Mr. Hustle and Determination Award. Steve Stukenberg and Tobi Branscomb were Most Improved players. Morris was chosen Most Valuable by his teammates as he led the team in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocked shots. Morris was also selected to the Upstate Illini East team receiving honorable mention. According to Coach Erickson, “Despite the win loss number these guys always fought hard. We could have just as easily won 6 or 7 games as lost them. I'm proud to have coached these young men who will be winners in life. Basketball 43 G'oA Ttadc The girls' track team had nine members this year. Some highlights of the season included every teem member edrning a meddl at the conference meet by placing in first through fifth place either as an individual or on a relay. Jean Campbell and Lisa McKinley were named to the All-Conference teom by placing first at the conference meet. Another highlight was Lisa McKinley breaking the long jump record by leaping 16' 8 . Melody Kappenman was voted as the Most Improved player and Usd McKinley was voted the Most Valuable. Team members included senior. Melody Kdppenman; juniors, Lisa McKinley, Tanya Zellers; sophomores, Shahla Werner, Tonya Cates; and freshmen, Michele Blatter, Katrina Wagner, Stephanie Wilson. Debra Poggioli was the statistician. Coach was Lori Riemer. Boiji TtacJc The boys' track team experienced great success in perhaps the team's most successful season in history. Four school records were tied or broken and the entire team scored varsity points throughout the season. Scoring 111 points at the Cheesemaker Invitational in Monroe, Wi., the entire team set new record. Nick Heidenreich tied the mark in the 400 meter dash clocking 54.2. Jon Kump broke his own record in the triple jump leaping 41' 8l 2 . Heidenreich, Kump, Steve Harris and James Russell set a new record in the 800 relay with a time of 1:36.1. James Russell and Jon Kump each participated at the state meet in Charleston with first and second place performances at the district meet. Russell finished 18th in the long jump and Kump finished 22nd in the triple jump. Nick Heidenreich and James Russell were captains, James Kump was chosen Most Improved, and James Russell was voted Most Valuable. Despite the small numbers the Demons were competitive in every meet. With only 13 men the team finished 42 - 46. facing many teams with more than 30 individuals. It was an outstanding season. The seniors will be dearly missed but our young talent really showed signs of potential stardom, said Coach Erickson, summing up the season. Ytk BU Yd WtmJ 46 Cheerleaders ACTIVITIES Oktaluma ii 48 Musical This year Leaf River High School put on the musical Oklahoma! adapted from Green Grow the Lilacs by Lynn Riggs. Light supervisor was Greg Olson and sound supervisor was Eric Erickson. The entire cast did a superb job and the audience laughed and applauded the appreciation. Musical 49 50 Musical 1988 Science Fair Success The 1988 Science Fair was once again a great success. Over one hundred projects were entered and many were outstanding, showing a lot of work on the students' part. Students proudly displayed their projects on March 12, 1988 in the high school gymnasium. Judges selected David Sattgast and Heidi Kretsinger as developers of the fair's most outstanding projects. Each of these exhibitors, along with Jon Kump and his project, then went on to Northern Illinois University at DeKalb to participate in the Regional Science Fair. Sattgast received a second place, Jon Kump received a first, and Heidi Kretsinger received an honorary first. With the honorary first, Heidi went on to state competition in Champaign to compete against one thousand other projects. She received an honorable mention at the state level. Science Fair 51 Me£ Mb f-Jaflf Way The Leaf River Jr-Sr Prom was held at the Beltline Cafe at Freeport with post-prom at the Nash Recreational Center in Oregon. The theme this year was Meet Me Half Way with the chosen colors pink and green. Brian Meyers, junior class vice-president, was master of ceremonies at the prom dinner program which included the reading of senior class wills, future plans of the seniors, advice to underclassmen, and the seniors' best and worst memories. At post-prom participants played basketball and racquet ball and swam and ate pizza and watched movies. 52 Prom EAF RIVER UMBER Inc. Tlffu-i A Md Jdat Diflvuwft, Ph. 738-2711 Leaf River, IL. And another year has passed, full of all the activity, excitement and spirit that puts it all together! But there was also the hard work and extra effort that paid off in the classroom and on the playing field and courts. There were the people. Those teachers, coaches, advisors and administrators whose help and guidance put it all together. And there were friends and parents who made it all seem extra important and special. There were the memories. Scoring that goal or basket, spiking that volleyball, learning those dance routines for the play, or answering that question in academic bowl. And what memories they will always be. And that's what puts it all together! And so the staff of the Le-Ri-Co hopes they have put this year all together for each student of Leaf River High School. 64 Closing - r V T '• f, T e’ y {,- X A. s )' - ; k V- A ' v - v'a ' a-s.
