Mark Penn works on his computer assignment (or is this one of those fun games?) in computer class. Faculty 21 SCIENCE FAIR The Third Annual Science Fair is over and it was a big success. The fair itself was composed of 100 individual projects in grades 4-12. The projects ranged from general research projects to detailed projects based on complete scientific procedure. Along with these individual projects, grades Kindergarten through third grade placed class projects in the fair. Although all the projects were winners, seven students with their projects moved into the next level of competition at Northern Illinois University on April 4th. All placed. Local winners were as follows: Best of Fair- Spices, The Natural Antibiotic, Cathy Harris; First A awards- The Conductivity of Electricity Traveling Through Water, Danny Zittle; The Effect of Microwave Radiation on the Development of the Chick Embryo, Jill Swanson; The effects of a Restricted Diet on Crickets, Shahla Werner; The Effects of Salt Water on Moss Plants, Heather Jacob; Photosynthesis and the Effects of Different Colored Lights on Plants, Patti Craven; Hydro- ponics-Farming in the Future, Scott Grabins. Science Fair 23 ACADEMIC BOWL SUCCESSFUL RADIO PERFORMANCE The Leaf River High School Academic Bowl team put in long hours of early morning practice in preparation for their matches. This year the team has been able to practice using light boards, thanks to Steve Harris, one of the team members, who built them. The first match this year was at Durand against the host school, Dakota and Winnebago in a round-robin competition. The team then traveled to Sterling to compete against Tampico in the WSDR Radio Station Academic Bowl contest which continued through January. The team was the fourth highest scoring team, thus receiving a bye until the semi-finals, against Rock Falls, who defeated Leaf River in a close contest. Team members included Dwight Turner, Jim Campbell, Paul Lindstrom, James Kump, Steve Harris, Dallas Turner, Jess Bull, Joe Bull, James Russell, Cathy Harris, Jon Kump, Dea Martin, and Scott Grabins. Advisors for the team are Colleen Alvey and Sheila Bolen. Academic Bowl 25 FUTURE FARMERS The Leaf River FFA Chapter members participated in many Section 1 activities and were successful this year on an individual basis. Joel Lawrence received his State Farmer Degree, the Section I Foundation Award for Ag Placement, and was named the Section I Star Agribusinessman. Steve Stukenberg received the Foundation Award for Home and Farmstead Beautification. The Chapter's members took an active part in improving the school grounds including the erection of playground equipment, painting of the playground asphalt, and building curbs, ramps and sidewalks. The Chapter's efforts earned many area, section and state awards. 2q FFA FUTURE HOMEMAKERS The 1986-87 FHA officers were Pres. Chris Palmer; V.P. Kathy Boomgarden; Sec. Kim Kopecky; Treas. Anne Hurley; Rep. Monica Myers; Hist. Tonya Cates. The annual banquet was held at the Sword and The Stone in the Freeport Holiday Inn. Adviser was Mrs. Terri Nelson. 28 FHA HERO NHS 29 MOCK TRIAL CHAMPS Who is Ogle County's number one Mock Trial team among the seven county high schools? Leaf River High School is! Advisor Ron Lessen's team captured the three foot trophy by defating a team from Oregon in competition at the Ogle County Courtnouse. This allowed the team to continue on down to state competition at Sangamon State University. The competition pits teams from each school presenting a hypothetical case before a judge who then decides which side presented the better case. Members of Leaf River's team were Joe Bull, Jess Bull, Paul Lindstrom, Dallas Turner, Dwight Turner, Nick Heidenreich and Ed Rowland. ION STATE UNIVERSITY 30 Student Council Student Council 31 STUDENT COUNCIL The student council had another busy year. Again this year they sponsored homecoming but they also held a Fall Spirit week earlier in the year. The council again sponsored the annual can drive which was successful. The canned goods were presented to Mr. Bill Lomax for distribution. The council also sponsored the annual Christmas movie. Members of the council were Freshmen Lori Russell, Ryan Rummel, Bill Pals and Tonya Cated. Sophomores were Connie Gasmund, Cathy Harris, Jean Campbell and Tom Craven. Juniors were Kelli Rummel, Steve Stukenberg, Carrie Cook and Jill Swanson. Seniors were Paul Lindstrom, Ed Rowland, Bob Betz and Eric Badertscher. 32 Student Council CHORUS Chorus Pep Band 33 MARCHING BAND TO FLORIDA 34 Band FACING THE MUSIC The Music Department calendar was jam-packed with activities and concerts this year. The marching band began the year with parades and field competition. As a special treat we were a part of the three hundred musicians who performed with Maynard Ferguson at halftime of the Northwestern University vs. Army football game, as part of the annual Band Day. With November and December came indoor activities such as preparation for the Christmas concert, playing for basketball games and the Conference Music Festival at Franklin Center High School. The band and chorus were invited to perform at Sea World and the band was invited to march in Disney World during our spring break. They marched in the EPCOT Center Showcase Parade which took us through the World Showcase of Nations. We stopped and played in front of the French Pavillion and the American Pavillion. We packed many activities into the short time we had in Florida including Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach and Wet-N-Wild. After our return we took a short breather, then began preparing for our spring concert. This year, as all years, ended with graduation, a time to honor our seniors and wish them well in the future. Band 35 FLAGS ANNUAL 36 Flags Annual CHEERLEADERS 38 Cheerleaders The 1987 girls' track team consisted of 7 girls. Though it was hard to cause any major victories as a team, several individuals faired well. Lisa McKinley took 1st place in the long jump at the new 17 school conference meet. Others placing at the conference meet were Melody Kappenman, 3rd in discuss; Tanya Zellers, 4th in 400- Kim Kopecky, 5th in discuss; Lisa McKinley, Nicki Flick, Jean Campbell, Tanya Zellers, 5th in 400 relay; Lisa McKinley, Nicki Flick, Jean Campbell, Tanya Zellers, 5th in 800 medley relay. Again as tradition holds from last year, one of the favorite track events was eating ice cream after the practice before big meets. Lisa McKinley was voted most valuable team member and Tanya Zellers most improved member. Girls' Track 39 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL The 1986 varsity volleyball team had a record of 10-15. They took third place at the Franklin Center tournament and won the consolation bracket at the Leaf River Tourney after losing to the tournament winner, Dakota, in round one. After all the stats were compiled, 10 of the 19 school records had been broken. Pam Meyers was voted Most Improved; Kelli Rummel, Miss Hustle; and Jill Swanson, Most Valuable. Jill was also voted to the 1st team All-Conference while Kelli Rummel received honorable mention. 40 Varsity Volleyball DEMON BASKETBALL Seven seniors constructed the foundation of the Sixteen man varsity squad which placed a record of 6-17 for the 1986-87 season. Highlights were many; one being an outstanding mark being reached on January 27th. against Milledgeville, Tim Groom beat all odds and sunk a record breaking 81 foot shot to end the first half of play. Most Valuable Player was Tim Groom; Most Improved Player was Jamie Bicksler, Mr. Hustle was Eric Badertscher; Leading scorer with 19 pt. avg. per game was Tim Groom; highest freethrow percentages were Tim Groom and Eric Badertscher. Jim Campbell completed 50% of all his shots. 42 Varsity Basketball Four sophomores led the 1986-87 Junior Varsity basketball team to a three victory season. Although the win column was low, the season was a positive one, for each player improved in individual skills. Seasons statistics were as follows: high point scorer was Mike Engbert with 196 points; top rebounder was Jon Kump with 121 rebounds; high scoring field goal percentages were Todd Branscomb and Tobi Branscomb with 61 and 58 per cent. Dan Groom had the highest freethrow percentage at 69% Frosh-Soph. Basketball 43 BOYS' TRACK 44 T rack VARSITY FROSH-SOPH. TEAMS The Leaf River Boy's Track team had another productive year winning two meets. At the beginning of the year. Leaf River took on Stillman Valley and Ashton at Stillman and won the meet by 13 points. The next victory was much closer with Leaf River defeating Polo, Eastland and Durand by Vi point. The individual highlights also began early in the season as Jon Kump broke the Frosh-Soph triple jump record in his first meet. He then went on to break his own record at the Stillman meet, setting the new mark at 40 feet 6V2 inches. At the Ogle County meet, Jon took third in the triple jump and Mike Engbert turned in a fantastic mile to take fourth in the event. At the expanded Upstate Illini Conference track meet, the Frosh-Soph. team, which consisted of 7 people, took 4th place in a 14 team field. Shawne Aldridge, Jon Kump and Mike Engbert took firsts. The Varsity took 5th place with Tim Groom, Bob Betz, Jim Campbell and Eric Badertscher leading the way with a second place finish in the 400 relay. The seniors. Bob Betz, Eric Badertscher, Curt Brown, Jim Campbell, Tim Groom, and Greg Stone, will be missed, but many fine athletes are ready to try and fill their shoes. Track 45 SUCCESSFULL SEASON 46 Soccer This season can be summed up in one word-cooperation. By working together and acting as a unit instead of 19 separate players each going his own way, they were able to overpower their opponents. In practice and in games, every player improved his skill and his knowledge of his position and role on the team. The weather can be said to be a factor in our game. Almost every contest we won was played in the pouring rain. Our boys love to play in the rain and mud! The highlights of the season were our first night game and winning our first regional game against the Paw Paw Bulldogs. Both events produced not only team spirit and pride, but school and community spirit. I hope to see more of this in the future as our team grows even stronger. Most valuable Player, Paul Lindstrom; Most Improved Player, Steve Harris; Mr. Hustle, Bob Betz; Season High Scorer, Nick Heidenreich, 10 goals; Most shots on goal, for season, Tim Groom, 10 goals. The season record was 9-4-2. Soccer 47 STAND BY ME 48 Homecoming HOMECOMING COURT Homecoming week was once again a very spirited and eventful week at Leaf River High. Our theme this year was Stand By Me and music was provided by Ron Jansen. Over one-hundred students attended the dance on a cold Saturday night. Most of the students enjoyed the music and dancing so much that they stayed to the very end. The new 1986-87 Homecoming Queen, Peg Frickson and King Bob Betz, were crowned by last year's royalty, Jodi Engbert and Mike Carr. The attendants were Seniors Kim Wells and Paul Lindstrom, Jennie Rager and Ed Rowland; Juniors Pam Myers and George Boomgarden; Sophomores Tanya Zellers and Tim Freeze; Freshman Becky Morris and Ryan Rummel. First Graders Erika Bielema and Tom Penn served as the crown bearers. Competition during the Homecoming Week was fierce. The Juniors won the week competition with a total of 77 points, Seniors had 61, Freshmen had 56 and Sophomores had 46 points. The Juniors either won or tied with the Seniors for dress up daily all week, tied for the egg competition with the Seniors, won the locker and hall decorating competition, and won the Loyalty Song Contest. The Freshman defeated the Seniors in the Tug-o-War finals. The Frosh- Soph girls defeated the Jr.-Sr. girls by a score of 4-3 in the Powder Puff Basketball game. Homecoming 49 ALMOST PARADISE 50 Prom Hello Dolly is a romp in New York City during the late 1800's. The action centers around the dealings of one Dolly Galhager Levi, a witty, self-confident matchmaker who makes it her business to know all that is happening around her and live life to its fullest. The Leaf River production of this wonderful farce on life began in late January. The call for auditions went out and, as with all auditions, there was tension in the air. Relief came as each individual finished his or her performance. The cast was chosen and the first readthrough set. On February 11, the cast of 25 and staff of 16 accepted a challenge which took eight weeks to realize. This year's production required much more choreography, which was energetically created and taught by Miss Riemer. Many hours of vocal, dance, dialogue and staging rehearsals were spent learning the script scene by scene and making the words on the page come alive. The hard work and dedication paid off. The chemistry which developed among the characters as they became more involved in their roles created a great comic timing and enthusiasm. This put together with grandios costumes and scenery are the things that make a comedy appealing. Musical 51 HELLO DOLLY Cast: Dolly Levi, Kelli Rummel; Ambrose Kemper, Bill Pals; Horace Vandergelder, Jim Campbell; Ermagarde, Jami Cook; Cornelius Hackl, Steve Stukenberg; Barnaby Tucker, Ryan Rummel; Irene Molley, Cathy Harris; Minnie Fay, Chris Palmer; Ernestina Money, Amy Rummel, Rudolph, head waiter, Greg Stone; Judge, James Russell; Waiters and Townspeople, Bob Betz, Jenny Blatter, Tom Craven, Jean Campbell, Steve Harris, Donna Cooper, Mark Penn, Jill Swanson, James Russell, Tanya Zellers, Dallas Turner, Dwight Turner. 52 Musical Musical 53 ADVERTISING m—rn CACCIATORE'S BYRON FOOD LIQUOR MART Through Our Doors Pass The Most Important People In The World- Our Customers.
