ACADEMIC BOWL This year was the first year that Leaf River High School sent a team of students to participate in the Northwest 8 Conference Academic Bowl. In fact it was the first annual academic bowl to involve the entire conference. Teams represented Leaf River, Ashton, Durand, Franklin Center, Milledgeville, Mount Carroll and Pearl City. Those chosen for Leaf River's team were Matt Cooper (Captain), James Croft, Sara Croft, Denny Poggioli, Darrin Livingston and Danis Yocum (alternate). The Leaf River team did exceptionally well and advanced to the consolation championships where they lost to Ashton. It was a very good start for academic bowl at Leaf River and its continuation. 14 Academic Bowl

On April 2, 1983 at 7:00 PM a special open house was given to honor our distinguished band director, Mr. Sidney Anderson, for his 25 years of teaching at Leaf River High School. Mr. Anderson was born and raised in rural Elizabeth, Illinois. He graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science and Music Education Degree. At the open house alumni, current students and public alike were there to honor Sid . An alumni band was formed and performed several songs. The Leaf River High School Band of 1982-83 also performed a small floor show, much to the surprise of Mr. A. ! Around 300 people attended and to round off the evening, Mr. Mrs. Anderson were presented with a dream- come-true — a free vacation to Hawaii a gift made possible through donations. The schools of Leaf River and the community itself are deeply indebted to Mr. Anderson's committment of 25 years. A TRIBUTE TO MR. A. Mr. Anderson 15
