Opening 1 2 Opening Opening 3 1 TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT Prom was held April 30, 1983 at Stronghold. The evening's activities began at 7:00 p.m. The junior class officers welcomed the senior class of 1983. The meal was served followed by the reading of the senior class wills and advice to underclassmen. The dance began at 8:00 p.m. Sound Design provided the music. Albums were given away as prizes to trivia questions. This year, the yearbook staff noted a larger variety of participants involved in dancing. The dance this year was a huge success! When the dance was over the Prom activities continued at the Mount Morris Bowling Alley. Pizza, fried- chicken, and soft-drinks were provided, compliments of the junior class. The bowling lanes stayed open until 5:00 a.m. and were in constant use by the student body. However, by 4:30 a.m., only a few hearty souls were left! In conclusion, the Prom of 1983 went very well with the cooperation of the students and chaperones involved. HOMECOMING O ♦  o Despite certain setbacks, the Demons kept up with the spirit of Homecoming. Events were scheduled throughout the week, and students were honored for the best performances. On Thursday the Varsity Powder-Puff football team once again won the game. The game was played, this year, for the first time, in the dark with the lights on. The fresh-soph team played well, but could not upset the varsity. On Friday, each class submitted a float for the parade. The teaching staff judged the floats and declared the sophomore float the winner. Even though many last minute and second preparations were carried out, each class completed a float, and had fun working on it! The homecoming Volleyball game on Friday against Ashton aces was a huge success. Both the Fresh-soph and Varsity teams won their matches. After these wins, everybody was really excited and pumped up for the final events on Saturday. On Saturday, the Fresh-soph and Varsity football teams played the Pearl City Wolves for the annual Homecoming game. Despite the fine performances put forth by all team members, both games were lost. The Homecoming Dance was scheduled from 8:00 - 11:00 p.m. The dance started promptly at 8:00. A Y95 Disc jockey provided the dance music. At 8:30 the 1982 Homecoming King and Queen were crowned. Beth Newcomer and Mike Book were named. Despite setbacks, Homecoming was a success. In fact it was the first annual academic bowl to involve the entire conference. Teams represented Leaf River, Ashton, Durand, Franklin Center, Milledgeville, Mount Carroll and Pearl City. Those chosen for Leaf River's team were Matt Cooper (Captain), James Croft, Sara Croft, Denny Poggioli, Darrin Livingston and Danis Yocum (alternate). The Leaf River team did exceptionally well and advanced to the consolation championships where they lost to Ashton. It was a very good start for academic bowl at Leaf River and its continuation. 14 Academic Bowl On April 2, 1983 at 7:00 PM a special open house was given to honor our distinguished band director, Mr. Sidney Anderson, for his 25 years of teaching at Leaf River High School. Mr. Anderson was born and raised in rural Elizabeth, Illinois. He graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science and Music Education Degree. At the open house alumni, current students and public alike were there to honor Sid . An alumni band was formed and performed several songs. The Leaf River High School Band of 1982-83 also performed a small floor show, much to the surprise of Mr. A. ! Around 300 people attended and to round off the evening, Mr. Mrs. Anderson were presented with a dream- come-true — a free vacation to Hawaii a gift made possible through donations. The schools of Leaf River and the community itself are deeply indebted to Mr. Anderson's committment of 25 years. A TRIBUTE TO MR. A. In many ways teachers are directors. They teach us just as directors show actors and actresses how to be the best possible. At Leaf River High School, Ms. Dunbar, Mrs. Floski, Mr. Lesson, Miss Albey, Mr. VanDegraft, and Mr. Dishno are all directors. They direct the students in the direction which will lead them to the most success. They not only direct the students but also help them tremendously on their journey to the most possible success. All of these teachers keep our school running smoothly. To them we give many thanks, for without them, the show wouldn't go on. 18 Academics Academics 19 20 Academics Preparing for the future is one of the main goals of a high school student. Teachers expand our knowledge and help us learn practical skills. Through the Business, Agriculture, Library, and Home Economic Departments these skills are introduced to us and our skills are tested. Changr is essential for development. Each year new methods are designed to teach the new generation of students. Our thanks go to Miss Roberts, Mr. Cornelius, Mrs. Colin, Miss Gertmann, and Mrs. Horne for helping us learn these skills essential in life. Academics 21 Not all faculty members have a solid day of classroom activity. Some teachers, such as Mr. Fry, Mrs. Williamsom, and Mr. Anderson, are helping the students grow not only mentally but also physically. They strive to teach the importance of keeping not only a well cultivated mind but also a strong body. These teachers deserve our thanks for teaching us that a healthy mind and body go hand in hand. You can't have one without the other. 22 Academics AUTOGRAPHS Roberta Mallow Secretary Denise Blake Dennis Poggioli Treasurer Student Council Daren Poppen Dawn Blake Student Council Seniors 25 L Sheri Blake Charles Boomgarden William Feary Donald Filbeck 26 Seniors Bradley Gasmund Shawn Hambel Christopher Hendrick Patrick Hammond Jeanette Kimball Pamela Klentz Jason Kump Frank Leisson Mary Lindstrom Dennis McKinley Gregory Maxwell Christine Miller 28 Seniors Beth Newcomer Kathryn Oelrich Tim Pair Dorene Peterson Shelly Williams Denise Wright Not Pictured: Bruce Freeze Tonetta Hollis Randy Morris David Hubbard Wendy Wilken Seniors 29 CLASS OF 83 On May 27, 1983, 38 seniors graduated from Leaf River High School. En route to their undefeated season they took first place in their own Leaf River Volleyball Invitational by defeating Ashton, Oregon, and Shannon. Along with this championship trophy they also claimed the conference championship with a perfect 12-0 record. Their biggest win came over conference rival Mt. Carroll when the Demons were down 11-1 and 14-7 in the final game. However, Leaf River had a tremendous comeback and won the game 16-14 to win the match. In the regional tournament Leaf River was seeded second and therefore received a bye in the first round of action. In the semi-finals they beat Oregon to earn the right to play for the regional championship against top seeded Mt. Morris. After a see-saw battle that went three games, Mt. Morris emerged as the champion and was credited with stopping the Demons 18 game winning streak. VARSTIY GAMES AND Stillman Valley Mt. Our overall record of 5 and 9 does not indicate the success for the season. With little team experience we showed significant improvement with each game we played. Not only did the girls learn of the game of volleyball, they gained self-respect and a sense of cooperation. For us, there was more to the game than winning. We had the satisfaction of knowing we played our best. Coach Merry said, Even though it was my first year of coaching or any real involvement in volleyball I gained a lot through the experience. Thanks girls! Volleyball 45 The 1983 Leaf River varsity football team record did not show the true effort put forth by the young men. Even though they did not win a game, the young men constantly put a real effort towards football. The team did take some real steps towards improving the program. The young men kept striving to improve themselves right up to the last practice and game. At the season's end these following players received awards: outstanding back - Dennis McKinley, outstanding lineman - James Croft, Wickam memorial award - Mike Book, all-conference - Scott Smice, and most improved - Brad Gasmund. All in all the season was not the biggest success but yet it was full of effort and improvement. VARSITY GAMES AND SCORES LR THEM Forreston 0 55 Orangeville 14 29 Franklin Center 8 48 Mt. The seven losses by four points or less was very frustrating while the victories over Pecatonica and Milledgeville were particularly satisfying. While the team was not particularly pleased with the overall record there are some accomplishments that they can be proud of; the ending of an extended losing streak, their performance in the Forreston Holiday Tournament, defeating Milledgeville twice in one season plus some individual efforts. Throughout the season the team received compliments on their performances by basketball coaches, fans and officials which indicates the respect the team earned during the year. The 82-83 Leaf River team developed individual and team pride, teamwork, competitiveness and a belief in themselves that will serve as a foundation for their individual future and future Leaf River basketball team. 50 Basketball Basketball 51 52 Basketball FROSH-SOPH Kneeling L. to R.: Dale Boomgarden, Brett Fry, Rob Shipley. Denny McKinley broke records in the long and triple jumps, qualifying for the state meet in both events. He also teamed up with Denny Poggioli, Evan Buskohl and Bruce Freeze to break the 800 meter relay mark. Jeff McKinley broke his brother's record in the triple jump at the frosh- soph level, while the frosh-soph mile relay of Mickey Badertscher, Tim Stocker, Mike Johnson and Mike Wickam lowered their record impressively. Denny McKinley and Evan Buskohl were selected to the all- conference team for their efforts at the Northwest Eight Conference meet. McKinley also was voted by the team as the most valuable athlete while leading the team in points scored. Bruce Freeze was voted most improved for his efforts on relays and in the 800 meters. The frosh- soph team was impressive at their conference meet taking second by a single point to Milledgeville. Their efforts were all the more hopeful due to the large number of freshmen who made big contributions to the team. Jeff McKinley was voted frosh-soph MVP and also led the team in points earned, while Mike Johnson was voted most improved at frosh-soph. Track 55 FROSH SOPH 56 Track Track 57 GIRLS TRACK The Leaf River Girls Track team consisted of very few numbers this year. Each girl gave Coach Merry 100% and did a fine job. As the season progressed each girl showed significant improvement. Due to the fact of having only six meets, two new school records were set: Marcia Sattgast broke the 100 meter dash record with a time of 12:92 and Donna Tucker broke the 800 run record with a time of 2:48.06. Sara Croft was our high point scorer for the season. Even though the girls felt unsuccessful at times, the spirit and effort remained. As a first year coach Mrs. Merry said she could ask for no more. The team gives a special thanks to Maggie Spriggs for being their manager and Coach Merry thanks the 1982-83 track team for being a great group of girls. 58 rrack Track 59 Above: Stacy Bilyeu, Marsha Sattgast, Stephanie Bicksler, Janet Maxwell.
