The Eighties: A Winning Beginning The Eighties: A New decade, a new beginning. A new world ahead full of potential and possibility. And the students of LRHS reflect this challenge in all areas. In many ways, they are winners! So ... Here's To The Winners! Introduction 1 Administration SEATED L. to R.: Wendell Poppen, Jim Stukenberg, Sec. Le-Ri-Co especially salutes Peanuts Pals who retired this year after many years of service to the school. The students will miss him but do have fond memories of Peanuts in and around school. This chance of working together on float and gym decorations gives the students of LRHS to share in some moments which are special and add to high school experience. And for the guys on the teams, it is a time of combined effort and skill which in itself is a form of winning . 6 Homecoming Clockwise: Crownbearers: Pat- ty Craven Shane Wells Freshmen: Shelly Wagner Daren Poppen Sophomores: Mike Newcomer Karen Penn Juniiors: Tari Rose Jerry Schelling Seniors: Jodi Lomax Kevin Poppen, DeAnn Eike Andy Martin, Gwyn Zipse Dan Bar- ber, Carol Johnson Mike Mc- Namara Homecoming 7 1979 Homecoming Court 8 Homecoming Frosh-Soph Football Front Row L. to R.: M. Although there was not much success in terms of victories, many people gained experience which will be helpful for a great season next year. 10 Football Front Row L. to R.: B. Hubbard, B. With an exciting 9-0 victory in the year's finale over favored Rockford Lutheran on the strength of 3 Mike Fogle's field goals and a rockhard defense paced by the crushing tackles of Steve Becker and Steve Swanson and Randy Martin's 3 interceptions, the 1979 Demon Varsity clenched a 3rd place finish and a successful end to a sometimes frustrating, but, overall successful year. Our conference record was 4-3, with an overall 4-4 mark. Demon opponents were held to 1 TD per game while Leaf River aver- aged 14 pts or better. Other team highlights were the 28-0 drubbing of arch-rival Mt. Carroll and the season long play of our defense, as well as the lead- ership through both difficult and easy times of our captain. Individual highlights included the mention of Todd Hollis and Mike Fogle in the Rockford Morning Star Player of the Week column. All Area selections had Andy and Steve Swanson on the Hon- orable Mention Squad and Steve Becker on the starting unit. The final highpoint for the football pro- gram came at season's end with Senior tackle Steve Becker being picked to the Chicago Sun Times First Team All-State Squad. The selection honored both Steve and his teammates. (Again) For the fifth straight year our track team has taken home a conference championship track trophy. This year the Varsity climaxed a four year domination of the NW 8 Conference track scene. This year's Seniors have been conference champions in track since they were freshmen. The Frosh-Soph had a 3-1 dual meet record, with a third place finish at the Conference. Captain Mike Newcomer capped off a successful year by moving up to the Varsity level for district and capturing two medals. Other district results were the 3200 M. relay team of Mike Tooze, Mark Myers, Bob Toannon, and Mike Newcomer taking 4th, Brian Ballard taking 3rd in the 300 M. hurdles, and Bob Toannon taking 2nd in the 800 M. Qualifying for State capped off a very successful year for Bob who also took four gold medals in the Conference meet. Individual performances were rewarded at season's end. Matt Cooper was voted Most Improved Runner for the Frosh-Soph while Earl Johnson received it for Varsity. High Point awards went to Mike Newcomer on Frosh-Soph and Mark Myers in Varsity who took 3 golds and a silver at Conference in field, distance and sprinting events. School and conference records were broken this year. Kirk Neslund and Dennis McKinley both tied the high jump record of 5'8 , while Mike Newcomer set and broke the Mile record four times, finally with a 4:40.9 at district. Brian Ballard set a record in the 300 M. hurdles with a 40.6; the 3200 Mile run was set by Bob Toannon with a 10:43.5; and the 3200 M. relay set a new time of 8:30. The final measure of success was the All-Conference Track Team which we dominated thoroughly. Selected to it for championship performances were Brian Ballard, Mark Myers, Bob Toannon, Jeff Schelling, Dave Anderson, Scott Boolman, Mike Fogle, Mike Tooze and Mike Newcomer. Coach Harmston was more than right when he said, The entire school and community should be proud of the consistently high achievement we've produced in our track program.
