They finished the season with a 5 and 9 record. The team was large in numbers with 16 cagers participating, but small in size. Highlights included fine games against league winner Pearl City and runner-up Durand. Also, an exciting game with Ashton in which the Demons came back from a 15 points deficit, with less than six minutes to play, to take the victory. Rockford Lutheran, Franklin Center and Mt. Carroll also fell victim to the Demons this season.

Varsity Basketball L. to R. Dan Barber, Jeff Schelling, Randy Martin, Tim Wells, Dan Miller, Mark Long, Mark Myers, Kevin Poppen, Andy Martin, MikeTooze. Kneeling: Coach Van Degraft. The Leaf River Varsity Basketball team had a record-breaking season. The 14-7 record was the first winning season in 14 years and the best record since 1965. A 2nd place trophy from the Pearl City Turkey Tournament stands proudly in the display case representing an 8 point victory over arch-rival, Forreston. The Demons missed being conference co-champions with Franklin Center and Mt. Carroll by one game even though the Leaf River Squad defeated Franklin Center on their home court. The Demons defeated Regional champions Durand, led by 6'7 Mike Mareth, twice - the first victory, a triple overtime 72-70 struggle. Also, the Demons added another first - a victory in the Regional Tournament over rival Byron. No previous Demon team had even won a Re- gional basketball game. In summary, the Demons displayed a great team attitude which led to superior team play which resulted in a winning team. What a great season to remember! There were also post season honors for some of the Demon team members. Dan Miller was a First Team All-Conference selection and Mark Long was named to the Freeport Journal Standard All-Area Team. Mark and Jeff Schelling received Honorable Mention StcltS votes for All-Area. Dan was also named to the Forreston Holiday Tournament First Team. Liz-Tena-Deb-Karen 20 Varsity Basketball
