After a frustrating season, they traveled to Shannon and pro- ___________________________________________ ceeded to upset Shannon and later Milledgeville. Both vic- tories were won after playing only two games per school. The Leaf River Demon girls finished their season 2nd in the ( District after a hard battle with Polo. The Leaf River Frosh-Soph Demon girls came on strong dur- ing the first half of the season, but suffered the loss of play- ers as well as succeeding matches. However, their won-loss record proved to be quite different from last year. Moving from 8th place in the conference during the 1977 season to 4th place this year, demonstrated tremendous success. Frosh-Soph Basketball The Frosh-Soph Basketball team had a year of ups and downs as far as their wons and losses were concerned. They finished the season with a 5 and 9 record. The team was large in numbers with 16 cagers participating, but small in size. Highlights included fine games against league winner Pearl City and runner-up Durand. Also, an exciting game with Ashton in which the Demons came back from a 15 points deficit, with less than six minutes to play, to take the victory. Rockford Lutheran, Franklin Center and Mt. Carroll also fell victim to the Demons this season. Varsity Basketball L. to R. Dan Barber, Jeff Schelling, Randy Martin, Tim Wells, Dan Miller, Mark Long, Mark Myers, Kevin Poppen, Andy Martin, MikeTooze. Kneeling: Coach Van Degraft. The Leaf River Varsity Basketball team had a record-breaking season. The 14-7 record was the first winning season in 14 years and the best record since 1965. A 2nd place trophy from the Pearl City Turkey Tournament stands proudly in the display case representing an 8 point victory over arch-rival, Forreston. The Demons missed being conference co-champions with Franklin Center and Mt. Carroll by one game even though the Leaf River Squad defeated Franklin Center on their home court. The Demons defeated Regional champions Durand, led by 6'7 Mike Mareth, twice - the first victory, a triple overtime 72-70 struggle. Also, the Demons added another first - a victory in the Regional Tournament over rival Byron. No previous Demon team had even won a Re- gional basketball game. In summary, the Demons displayed a great team attitude which led to superior team play which resulted in a winning team. What a great season to remember! There were also post season honors for some of the Demon team members. Dan Miller was a First Team All-Conference selection and Mark Long was named to the Freeport Journal Standard All-Area Team. Mark and Jeff Schelling received Honorable Mention StcltS votes for All-Area. Dan was also named to the Forreston Holiday Tournament First Team. The Demon girls had one primary goal as they entered the second season of track, to break as many of the records set during the 1st season as possible. With an entire team effort, the girls were extremely successful in reaching their goal. 11 out of 16 records were broken. The girls competed in 7 meets including Conference and District. Finishing 4th in the conference reflected improvement over last year's 5th place finish. The district medals were awarded to the following girls: Mindy Hammond placing 4th in the discus and 5th in the shot put; Chris Rutkoske, Lynn Hunsaker, Toni Leisson and Carolyn Myers placing 5th in the 440 yd. relay and Carolyn Myers placing 5th in the 110 yd. low hurdles. 22 Girls' Track Girls' Track 23 Varsity Track Kneeling L. to R. : M. Highlighted by their double level conference championships, the 1979 track team ended its highly successful season with Wayne King's 14th place finish in the state meet long jump competition. The season saw 12 school records set and 22 school records broken. The season end saw 25 tracksters receiving 25 letter awards. Individual trophies were won by Bill Mayberry (Varsity Most Improved) and in a tie, Scott Boolman and Mike Newcomer (Frosh-Soph Most Improved Runner). High point trophies were taken by Dave Anderson in the Fr. Soph with 76 points and Wayne King in the Var- sity with 155. Coach Harmston commented that he was very proud of this group of young men who set their goals high and came through despite some setbacks such as poor weather and track conditions. We congratulate the Demon track teams on their successful year. Frosh-Soph Track Kneeling L. to R.: M. Fogle, B. Ballard, D. Anderson, C. Bennett, D. Knodle. Standing: Coach Ascher, J. Tooze, M. The theme of the Prom was 11A Time For Us'1. The toastmaster for the even- ing was Jeff Schelling. He first introduced Kevin Pop- pen, Junior class president, who welcomed all the Seniors and hoped they had a good time at both Prom and Post-Prom. Dan Miller, Senior class president, accepted the welcome and on behalf of the Seniors thanked the Juniors and their adviser Miss Alvey for all the time and effort put in. After a very nice buffet supper, Mike Wilson, a past graduate of Leaf River, spoke to the group. After the speaker, a dance fol- lowed at which everyone seemed to have a good time. At the close of the dance, everyone met later at the Mt. Morris bowling lanes where the Juniors had re- served the entire building until 5A.M. Everyone seemed to have a good time, bowling, playing pool and of course eating ! It was a good time enjoyed by all. 28 Prom Prom 29 Graduation 1979 Front Row L. to R.: Lynn Hunsaker, Val Bomeman, Pam Cross, Deb Peterson, Lorraine Williams, Betty Dil- beck, Diane Huenefeld. This year will be a year to remember for the members of the Leaf River High School Band. It was a busy but successful year. During the summer and fall, they marched at parades in Kirkland, Mt. Morris, Forreston and Oregon. In October the band traveled to Champaign to receive a surprising 3rd in a tough marching competition. Then, during the concert season the band performed their annual Christmas and Spring concerts and also received a 1st place rating at contest. The goal this year was to purchase new uniforms through the sale of fruit, cheese and pizzas. A standup concert was then given for the public to show the band's appreciation. Much effort went into purchasing these uniforms but the members felt it was all worth it. 52 Concert Band Band Front Row: C. Johnson, L. Hunsaker, A. Gremba, V. Bomeman. Row 2: A. Oleson, T.
