The week before the game was filled with contests from Dress-Up days to the Powder Puff football game, which the Varsity girls won 8 to 6. A pep rally and bonfire was held on the Friday night and the attendants were announced at that time. The game on Saturday was exciting with the Frosh- Soph winning 38 to 12 but the Varsity fell short with a 24-14 loss. That night Rick Roop and Sheila Barber were crowned King and Queen at the Dance. The midseason points saw the Demons a holder of a 3-2 record, with three shut-outs and a 2nd place defen- sive ranking of all Northern Illinois high schools. A series of mishaps weakened the ball club to its disappoint- ing finish. Post season honors were not withheld, however. All-Conference status went to Rick Roop and Bill Toannon. Steve Cornelius and Rick Roop were chosen to the Coach 0 Athlete Outstanding Senior Football Team. Rick Roop was also chosen to the Rockford Morning Star All Area team. DEMON '77 TRACK CLOSES SUCCESSFUL YEAR _ ™ Leaf River runners, throwers and jumpers put the cap an a year, which in general, gushed success. Records fell in profusion this year to the quick tempo of Demon achievement. Team records saw the Frosh-Soph top 100 points in dual competition twice—vs. Franklin Center and vs. Shabbona, a school, record. The Frosh- Soph second consecutive Track Conference Championship also was a record. Conference records also fell to the Demons in plenty. In all Leaf River now holds eight records in the old Upstate Illini Conference. At the varsity level the quartet of Terry Miller, Bill Toannon, Jim Schelling and Doug Turner hold the conference 440 yd. relay mark of 46.5. At the Frosh-Soph level the Demons also own the 440 yd. relay mark, a 49.0 by Mark Myers, Casey Lester, Dan Miller and Dave Borgmann. Showing strength in the weights (shot and dis- cus) marks are owned by Kevin Klapp and Mark Long. Another junior, Bob Wagner's 2 year old record in the 880 still stands and the Demons have a double champion in the mile and 2 mile, Freshman Bob Toannon. Both track teams did an excellent job this year and were exciting to watch. Good luck next year. Track 35 36 Theme 1977 Graduating Seniors FRONT ROW L. The club met every day during activity period and added girls to the membership. Over 60 students took part in various phases of the weight program. The results in boys sports can readily be seen this year by the total record - 6 sports offered, 4 of them winning, 2 of them confer- ence champions. We hope the results for the girls sports will be as gratifying. Weightlifting 57 FRONT ROW L. TO R.: Adviser Mr. Wesley, Treas. S. Bryant, Sec. L. Kappenman, Pres. M. Wilson, VP. S. Cornelius, Rep. Flag Girls The 1976-77 Leaf River Marching Band started off with a busy summer and fall. They per- formed in OLD CHICAGO in August and in parades in Genoa, Ashton, Mt. Morris, Kirk- land, Forreston and Oregon. Our band also hosted the second marching band contest for the Leaf River Bi-Centennial Celebration. This year 7 bands performed. Winning bands were the Crown Imperials in Class AA and Leaf River in Class A. The Marching Demons and flag girls also participated in a NIU Homecoming parade and at home football games providing excellent half-time enter- tainment. Many hours of hard work by the group and individuals help make our band one to be PROUD of. Girls’ Chorus FRONT ROW L. TO R.: L. Van Brocklin, P. Johnson, M. Bomeman, K. Motter, N. Student Index 95 The staff of the Le-Ri-Co would like to dedicate this annual to the 1977 Seniors. It is true that they may never pass this way again. And we hope that through this book they may look back at their years at Leaf River High School with affection and lasting memories always. They will be missed in the halls of LRHS. We wish them every success and happiness that life has to offer them. Good Luck. 96 Closing
