The Demon Machine became a contender under the leadership of quarterback Terry Miller and the push of an offensive line that had our team averaging 338 yds. and 18 points a game, while the defense only allowed an average 12 points per game. The two main horses for the team were Brad Miller who averaged 18 tackles a game, gained 957 yds, and was high scorer with 84 points and Rick Roop who had 1040 yds. total offense. Jay Leisson was leading receiver with 240 yds and Mike Wilson had 6 interceptions. No matter who led each category it was a team effort that made us all proud of our Demons. 12 Varsity Football Tom Barber Senior Players ‘76’ Kim Burkhart Jay Leisson All Conference L. Lily is in love with Compton Fair- weather but through the evil influence of Craven Sinclair, Compton gets in trouble and must flee, leaving his family fi- nancially ruined. After two years Compton returns with a for- tune to save Lily from Craven and restore his family to its rightful place in society. The entire cast did a great job in putting on the play which was enjoyed by all. Junior Play 19 Varsity Basketball FRONT ROW L. TO R. : Mgr. R. Wilson, T. Barber, H. Burgett, D. Dilbeck, M. They played with in- telligence and determination which proved to be their top assets. At 5-13 one would not always consider this a success- ful year. However, when a team begins to play defense and understand its own weaknesses, they have grown and this is also success. We wish the young team further success in their future at LRHS. 22 Frosh-Soph Basketball HOME Of 24 Theme Again this year the SOS put on their annual money- maker, a carnival. Everyone had a great time, especially all the little kids who won such prizes as rings, compasses and tops just to name a few. The carnival was complete with games, booths, a very wet sponge throw, bobbing for apples and a very scary wax museum as can be seen from the pictures of a few of the characters. The SOS worked very hard and did a great job. s 0 s C a r n • 1 v a 1 26 SOS Carnival Athletic Banquet This years athletic banquet was entitled Super Stars 76 and the SOS did a very nice job of organizing it. The highlight of the evening was the pres- entation of awards to all sports participants. Miss Padgett first awarded all the Poms and Cheerleaders who in turn gave her flowers. Mr. Nolan gave the Fr. Soph basketball awards with Most Improved Player going to Pat O'Brien and the Scholastic Award to Jack Potts. Mr. Van degraft gave Var- sity awards with MVP to Brad Miller, Defensive Award to Rick Williams, Free Throw Award to Jay Leisson and Scholastic Award to Dan Dilbeck. Mr. Harmston gave the football awards with the honors going to Tom Bar- ber, Brad Miller and Butch Pingel. In Fr. Soph. Mr. Nolan honored Steve Hartje, Russ Green and Wayne King as the award winners. Bill Toannon was given the Sportmanship award. “Carnival” This year LRHS presented their first all-school mu- sical, Carnival , a story of a poor orphan girl who joins a carnival and is caught up in all its glamour and emotions. The musical met with huge success due to the talents and work of the 36 member cast. They worked very hard on parts, costumes and scenery and the effort paid off with full houses both nights. Thanks must be given to Mrs. Dunbar and Miss Alvey who co- directed, Mr. Anderson who worked with the chorus, Miss Padgett who choreographed the dances and a list of others without whose help, the show would not have gone on. We hope next years production will follow in Carnival's successful footsteps. CAST Lili Daurier................. Paul Berthalet............. Marco the Magnificent . . . Incomparable Rosalie . . • B. After a very good dinner, Miss Alvey was the speaker and her speech centered on Friendships . After dinner everyone danced to the band Resis- tance . A post-prom was held at the Bertolet building after the dance where kids played cards, pool, danced and ate pizza! The evening was very enjoyable and all who attended had a lot of fun. During the trip, the band was able to tour many different historic places, including Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It is a group dedicated to Scholarship, Lead- ership, Character and Service. Predicated on the premise of all- around excellence in high school students, it is called the Leaf Riv- er Chapter of the National Honor Society. The members of this group were chosen by the faculty on criteria of solid achievement, fundamental to which is a 4. 25 grade point average. The purpose of the group is to foster its ideals and provide school-wide services. Its first project was to provide an all-school tutoring service to stu- dents needing help. FRONT ROW L. Membership was again increased, under the leadership of President Jay Leisson, Vice President, Tom Barber and Sec. -Treas. Mike Wilson. Two projects undertaken successfully this year both improved the school's athletic facilities. First was an initiation project which made our football field safer and sharper looking; the painting of all light and field fence poles white. The second project, larger in scope, involved the entire community. It was a Demon Club sponsored fund raising venture to pay off the new field scoreboard. This project was begun by the club a year ago. The board was able to be erected in time for the first home football game in Septem- ber. To balance the work, the Demon Club and SOS took a Saturday and went to DeKalb to watch Northern Illinois University play Miami in an exciting basketball game, to eat pizza and to tour the beautiful NIU campus. The 1975-76 school year, the second for the Demon weightlifters, saw an increase in numbers and an increase in achievements on the personal level. As the club is noncompetitive, goals are set on a per- sonal basis and a real sense of accomplishment can be felt by an member willing to work to improve. The 36 young men and one young lady who participated this year put together some amazing statistics. For example, in one three week period in December the membership averaged a 40 pound per man lift increase in primary lifts: Bench Press, Leg Press, Pull Down, Curl and Dead Lifts. Some outstanding lifts this year were: NAME BODY WEIGHT Henry Huenefeld 100 Rick Roop 180 Ed Hillman 190 Russ Green 150 Dave Anderson 60 Bill Toannon 165 LIFT POUNDAGE Bench Press 140 Squat 410 Pull-over 140 Pull-down 200 Deadlift 160 One legged knee extension 80 Weightlifting Club s.o.s. The Spirit of Our School — Leaf River Pep Club — follows the teams to all games to cheer them on to victory. During this past year, the SOS was also busy with planning for the Athletic Banquet and the annual SOS Carnival moneymaker. Both events were very nicely done and everyone had a great time. This year the club also went along with the Demon Club to a Northern Illinois U. basketball game. All in all, it was a very busy and successful for the SOS. 60 S.O.S. Poms ABOVE FRONT ROW L. From this group a Boys and Girls chorus is formed to present special selections at contest and also at both concerts. These groups work hard while striving for perfection with little glory except that of the satisfaction of knowing that they have given their best. Many soloists and ensembles are formed from our chorus and they have rated consistantly high in the state solo and ensemble contest each spring. The eighteen seniors participating in our chorus have contributed much to its success and will leave openings which will be a real challenge to underclassmen in the coming year. They have created the musical excitement with halftime presentations at all home football games and rendered rousing pep tunes at all home basketball games. This year the band participated in many summer and fall parades. They also marched at NIU homecoming and Platteville U band day. The band received the first place award in the bicentennial celebration band competiton in Leaf River this fall. Besides an- nual concerts and contest and the Upstate Illini festival the band's main project for the year has been preparing for the Festival of Nations Concert and Competition in Washington D.C. in May. Band members worked hard on music and on fundraising for the necessary $9, 000 to make the trip. 1976 will be a year to remember for our band. 66 Concert Band Band FRONT ROW L. TOR.: S. Allen, A.
