Oh, Edward! 18 Junior Play “Are Teachers Human?” The Directors Are Teachers Human? is a situation comedy in three acts. It is the story of the new English teach, Arbutis Meadows, and the new principal, Edward Fowler, as they struggle through their first year at their new jobs. A few of the problems which beset them are a dominating school board president, C. Solomon Stone, and his daughter, Dolores, who is also a teacher and decides to marry Mr. Fowler, whether he wants to or not. There is also a play in free verse which Miss Meadows struggles to produce over the objections of Mr. Stone, and in spite of the be- wildered and inept student actors and actresses. The efforts of Mr. Fowler and Miss Meadows to do their jobs and survive provides high good humor. Congratulations to the juniors on a job well done. Gee, Miss Meadows. That bad, huh. The games were exciting and the guys showed some good football talent. The most and perhaps best game of the year was the Home- coming game against Franklin Center. It was more than just crepe paper, paste, staples and tape for the students and players at L. R.H. S. It was a week where school and team spirit really paid off. And the Demons really made it happen with an exciting victory. Good luck next year, Demons! It looks as though they have a lot to offer the Demons in the years ahead. 50 Basketball-Fresh-Soph. L. Cross Country The Cross Country team this year again had a very good year considering the fact that the only returning letterman was injured and unable to run all year. The team consisted of three Sophomores: Charles Voegeli, Mike Welch, and Robert Welch, two Freshmen: Dennis Ballard and Steve Cornelius. Robert Welch placed fourth at the conference meet and was picked All Conference and placed ninth in the Fresh-Soph Invitational out of approximately 150 runners from schools all over Northern Illinois. Dan Zellers, even though injured, made most of the meets and acted as recorder and timer. The manager, Tim Boyd, was a great help to the team by keeping track of all needed supplies and encouraging the runners. The team this year participated in 19 meets throughout the year and ran an aver- age of about 6 miles a day 7 days a week. Cross Country 51 Baseball FRONT ROW L. TO R. : B. Tillou, R. Roop, H. Leaf River High School completed its most successful baseball season in many years this year. With a team comprised of 5 freshmen, 3 sophomores, 2 juniors, and 3 seniors, the Demons finished 4-12 overall and 3-7 in the Northwest Seven Conference. The Demons, though young, turned out to have some very good hitters, and were able to average . 249 as a team and scored an average of 5 runs per game. Coach Kelly was especially proud of these young men because last year many of them suffered through a 0-12 season and yet had what it took to come back this year and be very competitive Next year should be a very good season for them. Added to the traditional march tempo routines were jazz rhythms, to which the ten pompon girls performed. They created movement combinations to add to steps learned at summer camps, which Reynae, Diana, Chris and Jan attended at the University of Wisconsin and Illinois State University. One new freshman member, Kathy, was elected to the veteran group of R. Lovell, L. Penn, R. Dirksen, J. Jones, V. Bell, C. Hagemann, P. McNamee, P. Anderson and D. Blobaum. Along with Mrs. Jenkin, their advisor, the squad spent many hours throughout the year at parades, games and countless practices. 58 Snaps Student Council FRONT ROW L. -R,: T. Miller, B. Toannon, D. This year the council did something different and had a Muscular Dystrophy Drive for St. Patrick's Day. They received money from classes and many people in the community. These are only a few things the Council has done to help out in the school and community. 60 Student Council Demon Club FRONT ROW L. The Demon Club this year was involved in many activities. In the fall they helped the railroad unload and pick up bags of starch from the train wreck outside of Leaf River. They also took a busload to Northern Illinois University to see a football game. The club also sponsored the annual Old Timer basketball game, which this year featured two alumni games, one for the under 30 group and one for the over 30 guys. The club also char- tered a bus, along with the SOS, and went to Chicago to watch the Chicago Bulls play a professional basketball game. This spring the members sold stationery. All in all, it has been a very active year for the Demon Club members. Demon Club 61 SOS FRONT ROW L. TOR.:J. Jones, Treas, C. Cederholm, V. Pres, L. Penn, Pres., R. In addition, beanies, pennants, and Demon patches were sold to school-mates. Many of their decorations were evi- dent during Homecoming Week, Spirit Week, and at the Athletic Banquet. The Leaf River High School Band has had a busy year again. Our activities included performances at our home football and basketball games. This year a flag corp has been added to the marching routine and has provided a new dimension to our band. The band performed at the University of Platteville homecoming parade receiving the second place award among the Class C bands. They also received first place in Best of Class at the Illinois State Fair. Included in the band activities were also the annual Christmas and Spring concerts, the Northwest Seven Con- ference Festival and the high school music contest at Highland. This year the band numbers 74 and is directed by Sid Anderson. 68 Concert Band Band FRONT ROW L. TO R. : N. Kahly, B. Roush, B. Martin, D. Bell, S. Miller. ROW 2: J. Munhollen, L. Bomeman, G. We sang a variety of music including traditional, sacred, pop and gospel rock, and presented selections with special accompaniment by Dave Cederholm, Guitar; Terry Miller, Bass; Brad Miller, Drums; and Jan Jones, Piano. The chorus performed at both the Christmas and Spring concerts and in the Conference Music Festival at Milledgeville Feb. 6th. We also performed well at contest again this year, and many members worked in solos and ensembles for contest at Highland College on Mar. 9th. The chorus, directed by Sid Anderson, is a musical asset to our school's fine extra curricular activities. Chorus 71 72 Snaps Junior Pres. Tim Leisson Vice-Pres. Kim Neslund Sec.
